G.A.T.E./Accelerated Program Information 4th-6th Grade Parents, When does G.A.T.E. start and what will it be about? The first session of GATE/Accelerated will be on Video Production. We will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15-3:00 p.m. in the computer lab (room 5) from September 29-November 5th. This session is limited to the first 25 participants. Parents must provide transportation home at 3:00 p.m. each day. Due to cuts, there are only TWO sessions this year, Video Production in the fall and another in the spring. Info on session two will be announced after January. What does G.A.T.E. stand for? Gifted And Talented Education Who can attend the program? Students who are GATE identified OR students on an Accelerated Contract but are not GATE. (For info on Accelerated Contracts, contact your child’s teacher directly. Accelerated Contracts are at the teacher’s discretion. To view an Accelerated Contract and see the requirements, go to: http://www.egusd.net/pleasantgrove/pages/links.html) As we are funded by the district G.A.T.E. program, G.A.T.E. students will receive priority placement in the class over Accelerated students if we are impacted. How can my child get referred for G.A.T.E. identification? The process can be initiated by the parent or the teacher. The teacher then fills out a checklist that identifies gifted characteristics (behaviors) and if a student frequently exhibits them. If the student exhibits the required minimum number of behaviors, the process will continue through the GATE Identification Matrix. The GATE Identification Matrix includes the following areas: (More information about the process is at: http://www.egusd.net/lss/gate.html) California Standards Test scores Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test scores (NNAT) Grade point average Equity factor Accelerated classroom performance Creative ability What happens next? Students can: qualify through the matrix, not qualify (but be test eligible), or not qualify (not test eligible). Eligible for testing If your child did not qualify but is test eligible, they will be given a testing referral form to sign and bring back. The first test date is October 11th. Referral forms for the October test date must be turned in by Sept. 24th. Taking the test is optional and totally up to your and your child. Other test dates are 1/24/09, and 5/16/09. What if my child is scheduled for testing, but the test isn’t until after the first session has started? Due to issues with the calendar and holidays, we must start the first session before the first testing date. If your child wants to attend session one, they must BE GATE at that time or Accelerated. If during the course of the session, they pass the test and are GATE identified, we can then dissolve the Accelerated Contract.
