A Brief History of the Most Delicious Creamery on Earth

After years of frustrations over finding the standard of quality, flavor, consistency, and

variety of the perfect ice cream, Donald and Susan Sutherland decided to create their own. As a

direct result, they started the first Cold Stone Creamery in 1988 in Tempe, Ariz. The Sutherlands

main focus was to strive for a variety that would never lose excitement and a quality higher than

any other ice cream. At Cold Stone Creamery, the Sutherlands developed their infamous concept

of “The Ultimate Ice Cream Experience”.

Driven by a passion to serve the world’s best ice cream, they began franchising their ice

cream empire throughout the rest of the United States. More than 1,400 operating stores later

(throughout the United States, Puerto Rice, Guam, Japan, and Korea), Cold Stone Creamery has

become a household name as the Sutherlands began to reinvent ice cream and continue to

surprise ice cream lovers worldwide. The pleasure of eating ice cream has been transformed into

a one-of-a-kind, memorable experience at Cold Stone.

Throughout the years, many new developments and milestones have marked the growing

of this ice cream empire. In 1995, Doug Ducey was named the President, and he helped Cold

Stone grow as he created plans for business development in a strategic direction for the company.

He became the CEO in 2000 and led Cold Stone to become a nationally and internationally

recognized distributor of high-quality, ice cream. The one-millionth ice cream “Creation” was

served in 1997, and Cold Stone only began to grow after that. In 2002, the company opened its

500th franchise, in 2002 its’ 250th store, in 2003 its’ 800th store, and in 2007 launched a new type of

franchise the cereal bar and café named “Kahala-Cold Stone”. Other landmarks that stand out

and Key Suppliers- all focused on serving their customers and the communities where
          they live.
We will do this in a culture where members of our Community are rewarded for the
experiences they create, and where exceptional experiences earn exceptional rewards.
