Lesson Title: Fragile Food Chains Relative Length: 1-3 days
Grade Level: Secondary Subject: Social Studies & Creative Writing
Immediate Objectives:
Students will learn about governing resources, planning for the future, and working with
unforeseen circumstances.
Students will take structured notes about how their choices and uncontrolled environmental
factors affected their hypothetical village.
Students will write about managing resources from an imagined personal perspective.
Students will be assessed, on an age appropriate scale, on the thoroughness of their notes and
on the understanding of their experiences as apparent from their subsequent writing.
Global Objectives:
To increase understanding of global and local resources and allocation
To increase socio-economic awareness and sensitivity
To understand the personal consequences of resource planning and governance.
Materials: Each student will receive a worksheet on which to chart the progress of their agricultural year
(below). Each group will receive a stack of 54 printed on cardstock, cut out, & thoroughly shuffled, with
events written on them, as well as money tokens and crop tokens (also below). Students will need lined
paper and a pencil or pen, or word processing resources.
Introduction: Set students up in groups. As a class, ask them what they know about the process of
producing food. Bring up incidents in the news nationally and globally, such as a rise in prices for certain
grown commodities (what might cause prices to increase?) or weather systems (how might they affect
food production?).
Activities:
1. Each student will receive a worksheet on which to chart the progress of their group’s agricultural
year (below). Each group will receive a stack of 54 printed cards with events written on them
(also below), and money and crop tokens.
2. Read the directions as a class & go over a couple of scenarios/examples. Try to personalize it, to
set the tone for the students to see these events as happening to people. Draw a card, or a few
cards, & talk about the personal ramifications as well as the effect on the game.
3. Have groups play the game and record their results on the worksheet.
4. Bring the class back together to talk about what happened, and about the writing assignment (the
last number on the worksheet). Ask students to suggest places that these scenarios could
happen in, and how the results might be different depending on where the family was. Then ask
them to do the writing.
Closure: Bring the class together once more for a full classroom discussion. This time, compare results
from all the groups in the class— maybe on a whiteboard. How did the families do? Who was
prosperous, and who had to re-locate (begin again) multiple times? Where in the world did students
place themselves while telling what happened in story form, and why? What strategies might we employ
at community, national, and world levels to make life easier for families like these everywhere?
Assessment: Students will be assessed on both individual and group participation throughout the
lesson. The worksheet should be assessed for accuracy and detail, and the short story should be
checked for imagination, story structure, and use of the timeline from the worksheet. Classroom
discussion should be a factor in the final assessment as well. Recommend grading in three parts: Group
& classroom game and discussion participation (40%), accuracy and detail of recorded information (20%),
and detail, structure, and quality of creative writing (40%).

Fragile Food Chains: A Year’s Snapshot Name:
1. Read the directions and the key very carefully.
2. Begin with 2 crop tokens and 3 money tokens.
3. For each month, you must first draw a conditions card, then reap a harvest according to the key
below, and finally pay one token (either crop or money) to feed your family. If you fail to feed your
family, document that you are malnourished for that month. If you are malnourished for 3 months in
a row, you have reached starvation and must leave your farm. Start again.
4. At any time during each month, you may buy or sell crop tokens according to the season you are in
(see key). During spring and summer months, you may plant crops. For each planted crop, harvest
as indicated by the season you’re in. Discard half (round up) of planted crops when winter begins.
5. Play the game for 3 total years. Then look at your harvest record. How many years were you
successful? When did you fail, and why? What happened to affect your life?
6. Imagine being a person in the family that just experienced the three years you recorded. What
would your life have been like? Write a one-page, single-spaced short story from that person’s
viewpoint. Choose and describe specific incidents, the way you felt during these incidents, and
what happened to your family because of them, both physically and emotionally.
