The Hockerton Housing Project is the UK‟s first earth sheltered, self-sufficient ecological
housing development, which has quite rightly received great publicity from the media. The
project is open to the public for guided tours. This beautiful site has seen the return of much
wildlife. Many trees have been planted and the residents, who also have their own flock of
sheep, grow fruit and vegetables. There is a beautiful lake with fish, which are farmed, and
reed bed for treating sewage. The houses themselves do not have central heating; insulation,
high specification glazing and soil covering the roof helps to keep temperatures stable. A wind
turbine and photovoltaic solar panels produce electricity. Water is collected for household
needs. Waste materials are recycled. The result is some of the most energy efficient, purpose
built dwellings in Europe.
