The wood is dominated by oak, ash and hazel and provides an ideal habitat for birds such as blackcap, great spotted woodpecker and jay. Wild flowers in the wood include primrose, violet, bluebell, wood anemone and wood sorrel. There is a beautiful lake with fish, which are farmed, and reed bed for treating sewage. The houses themselves do not have central heating; insulation, high specification glazing and soil covering the roof helps to keep temperatures stable. A wind turbine and photovoltaic solar panels produce electricity. Water is collected for household needs. Waste materials are recycled. The result is some of the most energy efficient, purpose built dwellings in Europe.
