                                                  Berlin, Germany. until February 2006, this
                                                  integrated light & media installation will
                                                  present new works by internationally
                                                  renowned artists that have been created
                                                  especially for this location & this medium.

                                                 decorates the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich,
                                                 Switzerland,. 275 tubes, each 7 meter long,
                                                 float in the middle of the impressive shopping
                                                 street, subtly highlighting its almost straight
                                                 curvature.

                                                 custom-made 'Xmas Generator' software
                                                 system controls the dynamic lighting effects,
                                                 depending on both visitor frequency within
                                                 the street & the vicinity of public holidays

     Collecting information                                 D-tower is an art piece, commissioned by the
     Representing Information                               city of Doetinchem in the Netherlands, that
     Continuous exhibition of information                   maps the emotions of the inhabitants of
                                                            Doetinchem. D-tower records HAPPINESS,
     … or abstract and more artistic                        LOVE, FEAR and HATE daily using different
                                                            questions.
     Then you have to decide how you are gonna assign
     meanings to visuals, colours, materials, shapes etc    D-tower consists of:
                                                            1. a tower, 12 metres tall, in the centre of
                                                            Doetinchem
                                                            2. a website
                                                            3. a questionnaire

                                                            In D-tower, every emotion has its own
                                                            symbolic colour: red for LOVE, blue for
                                                            HAPPINESS, yellow for FEAR and green for
                                                            HATE. Every day

                                                            The building is a 12 meter high structure
                                                            where standard and non-standard
                                                            geometry's make up a complex surface
                                                            made of epoxy formed by a computer
                                                            generated molding technique (CNC milled
                                                            styrofoam). This surface is very similar to a
                                                            gothic vault structure, where columns and
                                                            surface share the same continuum.
                                                            The building is directly connected to the
                                                            website in two different ways.

     The artistic qualities also help perception of representation




                                                                      Comment Wall by Kinecity (Marek Walczak,
                                                                      Jakub Segen and Michael McAllister) is a
                                                                      wall where people can write their thoughts
                                                                      directly onto a wall using their fingers. The
                                                                      camera-recognition system remembers their
                                                                      text and displays it over time. The further
                                                                      away you stand from the wall; the most
                                                                      distant texts are displayed. As you come
                                                                      forward, more and more recent texts are
                                                                      uncovered until, when you are in front of the
                                                                      wall itself, a blank area is created for you to
                                                                      write your own.

                                                                      Activity Wallpaper explores how a place can
                                                                      be provided with an electronic "memory" of
                                                                      how it is inhabited, i.e., how people move
                                                                      around, socialize, make noise or in any
                                                                      observable way spend time there.

                                                                      by collecting activity data using various
                                                                      sensors, and then displaying an
                                                                      interpretation of this data, in the form of an
                                                                      ambient visualization, back into the place.

                                                three large fountains used as physical, calm
                                                information displays, as they are
                                                metaphorically connected to several money
                                                currency rates on the Internet. the heights of
                                                the fountains depict the Yen, Euro and Dollar
                                                rates that are updated every 5 seconds,
                                                resulting in a data-dependent experience,
                                                both visual as audible.




                                                 "In the morning paper, I can read the weather
                                                 report as well as the stock quotes. But when
                                                 I look out of my window I only get a weather
                                                 update and no stock exchange info. Could
                                                 someone please fix this bug in my
                                                 environmental system? Thanks."

                                                                  PERL scripts (running under Linux) extract
                                                                  and analyze stock prices from online stock
                                                                  market quote pages on the internet. These
                                                                  values are sent to a program which
                                                                  determines whether to raise or lower the
                                                                  hemline via a stepper motor and a system of
                                                                  cables, weights and pulleys attached to the
                                                                  underside of the skirt. When the stock price
                                                                  rises, the hemline is raised; when the stock
                                                                  price falls, the hemline is lowered.

                                                                  This mediawork also utilizes a webcam to
                                                                  capture and display real-time images of the
                                                                  hemline as it fluctuates. A website
                                                                  simultaneously displays these images as well
                                                                  as the stock market quotes which are
                                                                  controlling the length of the hemline. This site
                                                                  is made available in conjunction with the
                                                                  exhibition of this installation.

                                                 Electronic ink works by using electricity to
                                                 rearrange black and white particles similar to
                                                 bits of ink and paper and it achieves the
                                                 same clarity as printed text. The cell is made
                                                 of flexible plastic, so it is paper-thin and
                                                 lightweight.

   can be used also                                           toasted bread as an information display
                                                              device: a toaster that parses meteorological
                                                              information from the web & then browns
                                                              bread with an image of what weather to
                                                              expect, readable & consumable on the way
                                                              to work. the image is burned on to the bread
                                                              by one of 3 stencils, representing sunny,
                                                              cloudy or rainy conditions.

                                                              eventually, the stencils could become more
                                                              sophisticated, to display detailed weather
                                                              maps, short text messages & even
                                                              advertisements on to bread.

                                                                       But first a touchable




                                                            Squeeze Me is a squishy toy that detects
                                                            certain bio-readings and responds to change
                                                            with visual feedback using light patterns. An
                                                            increase in one of the child's readings will
                                                            cause a change in the color and number of
                                                            lights displayed. Increasing or decreasing
                                                            readings will cause varying light intensities
                                                            and possibly animated light sequences.

                                                            three different prototypes of wearable
                                                            bracelets that visualize heart beat related
                                                            data. kontinuum displays heart beat tempo
                                                            via the rhythm of simple white light pulses on
                                                            a 10cm wide wearable plexiglas. alteration
                                                            (veränderung) shows the heart beat intensity
                                                            through the change of colors (green = slow,
                                                            red = fast) of LED lights embedded in silicon.
                                                            finality (endlichkeit) shows the 'remaining'
                                                            heart beat pulses of the wearer on a 16-sign
                                                            LCD display, by comparing the actual age of
                                                            the wearer with the average amount of heart
                                                            beats of a 75 year person (which with 60
                                                            beats per minute totals to about
                                                            2.365.200.000 beats in a person's life).

                                                              can be used a regular one. a beautiful
                                                              example of a LED-less ambient visualization
                                                              for clothing

                                                              an augmented messenger bag that aims to
                                                              incorporate the expressive signals of
                                                              electronic display into the material-based
                                                              environment of physical fashion. the bag is
                                                              able to change its dynamic display within the
                                                              context of its social environment, providing
                                                              versatile means for 'face-to-face signaling'.
                                                              the images are designed to be temporary:
                                                              with each change-of-hands the image quality
                                                              successively degrades. each image
                                                              remembers its history, triggering any nearby
                                                              ones if they share the same source. the goal
                                                              of this wearable display is to accelerate the
                                                              physical fashion cycle, facilitating more
                                                              meaningful representions of self-identity.

                                                            Vein 2 is a fibre optic necklace which
                                                            changes colour as the wearer's heartbeat
                                                            increases to reflect their mood – blue
                                                            indicates calm and red excitement. In order
                                                            for it to work, the wearer has a jogger's heart-
                                                            rate monitor strapped to the chest. This
                                                            sends a radio signal to a receiver and circuit
                                                            board in the jewellery. A custom-made
                                                            microchip counts the heartbeats and has
                                                            been pre-programmed to command certain
                                                            LEDs to light up in sequence.

                                                            consists of nine elliptical shapes cut from
                                                            iridescent film. In response to five
                                                            heartbeats, the elliptical shapes swell in
                                                            sequence as instructed by the microchip
                                                            embedded in the piece.
