					This is the
  story of
 Kuang-li
Long
 ago
  in
China
 A fierce dragon
 made his home
…on a volcano near
  a small village
 The people who
lived there were
 afraid for their
     lives…..
 ….. for the dragon
began to swoop into
the village and steal
   their animals.
But they didn’t know
    what to do.
Then the dragon
started to steal
    children!
 The head man
called a meeting.
  All the villagers
        came.
 “Someone must go
and kill the dragon”
 said the headman.
 “Who will
volunteer ?”
No one wanted to
   volunteer.

So he came up with
      a plan.
 “I’ll fill this bag with
white pebbles, and just
      one black one.”
   There was a pebble
for every person in the
          village.
  He told them
 “Whoever pulls
  out the black
pebble will be the
  one to kill the
     dragon.”
  Many people
pulled out white
    pebbles.
 Then Kuang-li’s
turn came …. and
there in her small
 palm lay a black
     pebble.
  Kuang-li bravely
set off to kill the
 dragon, but when
  she was outside
the village she sat
     and cried.
“How can I kill a
    dragon?

What can I do? “

  She sobbed.
 “ Dry your eyes,
     Kuang-li.”

 She looked up and
  saw an old man
dressed all in black.
“Take this knife.“
“If you push it into
  the dragon’s jaw
 you will succeed,”

    he told her.
 “ But how will I
get there? It is
    such a big
     volcano,”

  she replied.
 The old man gave
her a pair of boots.
“You must take one
step at a time and
  soon you will be
      there.”

   he told her.
 Kuang-li took the
knife and the boots
  and knelt to put
 them on her feet.
But when she stood
 up again the old
man had vanished.
Kuang-li’s feet felt
light as air and she
quickly reached the
      volcano.
  She climbed up
 silently until she
 reached the top
and there she saw
 the dragon.
  He was sleeping.
 She could just see
his great head lying
on top of a pile of
    animal bones.
  “Oh how am I
going to be able to
  strike under his
 jaw if his head is
on those bones?”
”He’ll wake up and
     eat me.”

 she whispered.
Brave Kuang-li
crept towards
 the sleeping
   dragon.
Her feet made no
  sound in the
 wonderful boots
 and she got right
    next to the
    dragon…...

without waking him.
 Suddenly, a big
black crow landed
   next to the
     dragon.
…. without
waking him.
 Kuang-li flapped
a hand to drive it
      away.
…but instead of
  flying off, it
opened its black
beak and gave a
 great loud……
“CAW!”
  The dragon
opened its eyes
 and opened its
jaws to snap up
   the crow.
 Kuang-li quickly
pushed the knife
upwards into the
 dragon’s jaw…..
…and killed it
  instantly
  She looked
around but the
crow had gone.
When Kuang-li
 returned the
villagers held a
festival in her
     honour.
The headman was
so ashamed of his
   cowardice he
      made
 Kuang Li became
    head of the
  village and the
people were never
   afraid again.
     THE END
