Since it is installed on grade with no embedment, Tric Bloc is able to move slightly on impact, absorbing kinetic energy from the colliding vehicle. And Tric Bloc barrier’s simple linkage system means rapid installation and easy maintenance. Extensive crash testing according to current safety standards has demonstrated Tric Bloc to be safer than conventional barriers. In a low-angle hit, for example, the 195mm high “curb” at the barrier base redirects the vehicle safely back into its travel lane, primarily by wheel deflection. Above the curb, a 255mm horizontal clearance to the barrier’s central stem reduces the chance of the vehicle body contacting the barrier. When high speed or a sharp impact angle gives the vehicle high kinetic energy, the curb will damage the impacting wheel, reducing the vehicle’s ability to climb the barrier. The smoothly curved transition between the curb and the stem reduces impact forces on the vehicle body, minimizing the angle at which the rebounding vehicle leaves the barrier. These improved impacting and rebound characteristics translate into reduced deceleration forces, giving the driver a better chance to regain control of the vehicle. And the damaged wheel naturally pulls the vehicle towards the barrier, further minimizing the vehicle’s interference with adjacent or following traffic. This means greater safety for the occupants as well as for others on the road. The Tric Bloc precast units are linked together like a heavy chain, allowing them to absorb impact energy by moving. This further reduces the likelihood of personal injury and the severity of vehicle damage. Should a strong impact cause significant movement, however, repositioning can be accomplished by one worker in a few minutes, while two can replace a damaged barrier in only 30 minutes. Crash Test Results This barrier was developed in Sweden and gives good results with both small (900kg), heavy (2,000kg) passenger vehicles and (10,000kg) intercity coaches, impacting at speeds up 110km/h and 25°. Because the barrier deflects, the impact severity is lower than for non deforming barriers. In other aspects, performance is similar to the Type F rigid barrier. Remarks. Impact height is extremely important. The connection between units must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer. Application. Particular application at sites where it is appropriate to allow surface runoff from the carriageway to pass underneath. Because it is readily moved, it is suitable for temporary works. Should an accident, or road repairs require traffic to go onto the other carriageway for a short period then gaps in this system can be quickly achieved. Design Points.
