Appointed a Companion in the General Division:

       The Honourable Justice Margaret McMurdo
       For service to the law and judicial administration in Queensland,
       particularly in the areas of legal education and women's issues,
       to the support of a range of legal organisations, and to the
       community.

       Mr Victor Smorgon
       For service to the community as a benefactor and supporter of a
       wide range of organisations, particularly in the areas of art,
       education and medicine.

Appointed a Companion in the Military Division:

       Lieutenant General Peter Leahy
       For eminent service to the Australian Defence Force in
       command of the Australian Army and strategic staff
       appointments.

Appointed an Officer in the General Division:

       Mr Mark Paterson
       For service to business and industry through policy development
       and economic research, to the resources sector in the areas of
       energy regulation and marketing, and to tourism development.

       Mr Dennis Trewin
       For service to statistics as the Australian Statistician, particularly
       through the reform of reporting standards and practices and
       support for a range of national and international professional
       organisations, and to the community.

       Mr Warwick Wilkinson
       For service to the professional and business communities,
       particularly as a contributor to a range of regulatory and
       competition policy organisations, and to the pharmacy profession
       and the pharmaceutical industry.

Appointed an Officer in the Military Division:

       Air Vice Marshal John Blackburn
       For distinguished service to the Royal Australian Air Force as
       Commander of the Integrated Area Defence System and Deputy
       Chief of Air Force.

Appointed a Member in the General Division:

      Mr Gregory Copley
      For service to the international community through strategic
      research and analysis of economic, social, political, security and
      environmental conditions to assist decision making agencies.

      Mr Max Kimber
      For service to engineering, through infrastructure and
      commercial development of the natural gas pipeline industry,
      and national and international contributions to technical and
      economic regulatory standards.

      Emeritus Professor Peter Rimmer
      For service to economic geography, and to urban and regional
      development in the Asia-Pacific Rim, particularly through
      research in the area of transport and communications systems.

      Emeritus Professor David Williams
      For service to the arts as an educator and administrator.

Appointed a Member in the Military Division:

      Lieutenant Colonel Cheryl Pearce
      For exceptional service as the Commandant, Defence Police
      Training Centre, the Provost Marshal - Army and the
      Commanding Officer of the 1st Military Police Battalion.

      Major General Mick Slater
      For exceptional service as the Commander Joint Task Force 630
      on Operation LARRY ASSIST and as the Commander Joint
      Task Force 631 on Operation ASTUTE.

      Air Commodore Ian Smith
      For exceptional performance of duties as a senior Air Force
      Logistics Officer and contributions to the strategic development
      of Australian Defence Force Logistics.

Appointed an Honorary Member in the General Division:

      Adjunct Professor Nicola Sasanelli
      For service to Australia-Italy bilateral relations by developing and
      promoting research and scientific linkages.

Awarded the Medal in the General Division:

       Mr Bevil Purnell
       For service to the community as a volunteer to a range of
       organisations providing assistance and welfare to refugees.

       Mrs Joan Rich
       For service to the community, particularly as a volunteer for the
       Australian Capital Territory Division of the Australian Red Cross.

       Mr Maurice Sexton
       For service to heritage conservation, particularly through the
       Kosciuszko Huts Association, and to the community of Canberra.

       Mrs Sandra Southwell-Stevens
       For service to the community as a foster carer of children and
       pre-adoptive newborns, and through support for young families.

Awarded the Medal in the Military Division:

       Commander John Mayfield
       For meritorious service in the Royal Australian Navy and the
       Australian Defence Force over a career spanning forty-one years
       and, more recently, as Deputy Director Capability Projects.

Awarded an Honorary Medal in the General Division:

       Mr Peter Cathles
       For service to the Yass and Wee Jasper communities.



                DISTINGUISHED SERVICE DECORATIONS


Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross:

       Colonel Peter Short
       For distinguished command and leadership in action as
       Commanding Officer of Al Muthanna Task Group Two on
       Operation CATALYST, Iraq.

Awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service

       Major Kyle Tyrrell
       For distinguished performance of duties in warlike operations as
       the Officer Commanding Australian Security Detachment IX –
       Baghdad in 2006.

Awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation:

       Australian Medical Detachment - Balad
       For sustained outstanding service and professional competency
       in the provision of health care in support of the United States Air
       Force Theatre Hospital, Balad, Iraq during Operation CATALYST
       from 1 September 2004 to 3 May 2005 inclusive and from 29
       September 2005 to 31 December 2005 inclusive.

                 CONSPICUOUS SERVICE DECORATIONS


Awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal:

       Chaplain David Jackson
       For outstanding service as a Chaplain to the Australian Army
       while serving with the Special Air Service Regiment at
       Swanbourne and on Operations.

       Major Darren Moore
       For outstanding service as the Operations Officer at the Defence
       Network Support Agency.



                     MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARDS


Awarded the Public Service Medal:

Australian Public Service

       Mr Simon Lewis
       For outstanding public service in the achievement of asset
       management objectives, particularly the sale of the remaining
       government shareholding in Telstra (T3).

       Dr Judith Pearce
       For outstanding public service in the development and delivery
       of online library services.

       Mr Garry Wall
       For outstanding public service to Australian industry, particularly
       his significant contribution to the 2006 Review of Uranium
       Mining, Processing and Nuclear Energy.

       Mrs Bernadette Welch
       For outstanding public service in leading the restructure of the
       HIH Claims Support Scheme and the logistical arrangements for
       the Meeting of G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank
       Governors held in Melbourne in November 2006.

       Dr Ian Williams
       For outstanding public service in the implementation of the
       Kinnaird reforms for defence procurement and the establishment
       of the Defence Materiel Organisation as a prescribed agency.

       Mr Paul Williams
       For outstanding public service through leadership of the 2006
       Census of Population and Housing and to census data
       collection, nationally and internationally.


Awarded the Australian Police Medal:

Australian Federal Police

       Commander Stephen Lancaster
       For distinguished service to the Australian Federal Police,
       particularly as the Contingent Commander for Operation Serene,
       Timor-Leste.


Awarded the Ambulance Service Medal:

Australian Capital Territory Ambulance Service

       Mr David Foot
       For distinguished service to the Australian Capital Territory
       Ambulance Service through leadership, innovation and
       resourcefulness.
