ROCKA PROMISE TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE
The Brumby Government has backflipped and adopted the Victorian Liberal Nationals
Coalition’s policy to increase funding for the Rock Eisteddfod.

But in a bitter blow for the thousands of students preparing for this year’s event, organisers
have confirmed the funding has come too late to save this year’s competition.

Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs Hugh Delahunty said he welcomed the government’s
belated decision to adopt the Coalition’s policy.

“John Brumby has finally seen sense and agreed to the Coalition’s demands that he
provide an extra $100,000 to the Rock Eisteddfod Foundation,” Mr Delahunty said.

“Unfortunately the commitment is too little too late for the 7500 students who have spent
hundreds of hours rehearsing for this year’s challenge.

“Organisers have confirmed that they no longer have the time they require to pull the event
together.”

Mr Delahunty yesterday moved a motion in State Parliament condemning the Brumby
Government for procrastinating until it was too late to save the event.

“The Brumby Government owes Victorian students, their teachers and families an
apology,” Mr Delahunty said.

“Labor’s refusal to work with the organisers of the Rock Eisteddfod has left thousands of
students in a state of limbo.

“Those students have been denied the opportunity to participate in this year’s Rock
Eisteddfod simply because the Brumby Government couldn’t be bothered finding the
money.”

Mr Delahunty said Youth Affairs Minister James Merlino had hypocritically described the
Coalition’s policy, which he later adopted, as ‘lazy’ and ‘economically irresponsible’.

“Labor MPs refused to stand up for the Rock Eisteddfod while John Brumby spent
$20 million on fairy lights for the West Gate Bridge.

“The truth is the Rock Eisteddfod could have gone ahead if the Brumby Government had
offered to increase funding earlier,” Mr Delahunty said.
