__________________________________________________________________________________________ 2 February 2010 For immediate release Quiet Reader Curated by Prue Gramp Johnnie Dady, Sandy Elverd, Louise Flaherty, Paul Hoban, Kay Lawrence, Arthur Phillips, Annalise Rees, Olga Sankey, Lara Torr and Meg Wilson To be opened by Wendy Walker On Friday 12 February 2010 6-8pm Exhibition concludes 13 March 2010 When writing is used in an artwork its meaning in relation to language immediately shifts as the context in which we experience it has changed. The text can become distanced from its function as a visual semiotic and acts as an aesthetic element similar to the line in drawing, although it may maintain its identity as writing. Text in art can also be used as a device of communication, where it bridges the boundary between the cognitive world of language and that of visual imagery. The relationship between writing and drawing is inextricably linked where the fundamental origins and intentions come from a similar impulse. Quiet Reader will be a group exhibition at Adelaide Central Gallery during the Fringe and the Festival, 2010. There will be a diverse range of artists involved including works that contain legible text and writing as well as works that more abstractly reference the structure, gesture and movement of writing and mark making. Sandy Elverd will also be conducting a Short Course to coincide with the exhibition: Sculptural Forms: an exploration of natural fibres 13 and 20 Feb from 10am – 3pm.
