Erik Ladefoged, the founder of GMS Ltd, established a business relationship with the
Chinese slate quarries back in 1986. GMS Ltd has become a major importer of not only Slate
and Sandstone, but also Marble, Travertine and Limestone for floors and walls from all the
main stone processing countries worldwide. We bring in containers to our 33,000 square foot
warehouse in Kent and supply from our considerable stock direct to the end user in the UK
and abroad, now having supplied thousands of natural floors. We are not a shop and do not
sell through retail outlets or have High Street showrooms, thus keeping costs to a minimum.
That’s why we can sell proven quality tiles at considerably lower prices than other
companies and over half our customers are now by recommendation from previous
customers. We are pleased to offer practical advice based on our experience, with free
samples upon request, to ensure you make the right choice. You are also welcome to come
to our warehouse in Kent, where most products are on large displays in our showroom, and
select from our comprehensive stock. Please contact us to make an appointment. We are
conveniently situated on the A229 and have ample parking space available. For travel by rail
we are just 3 minutes walk from Staplehurst Station.
Directions are available on request or visit our website www.stoneandwoodfloors.co.uk

Description of Natural Slate for flooring

China Grey Very popular, classic and traditional high quality darkish grey slate, dense and hard, some will also have a
few red and yellow colours, particularly on one side which we advise to be tiled as downside. Not for exterior use, but
probably the very best slate for ‘West Country look` cottage and farmhouse kitchen/hallway. Sealed with an invisible
sealant it will keep its darkish grey colour or sealed with a colour enhancer it will appear black. 30 x 30 x 1.2 – 1.5cm
£22.05/m²

We also supply high quality Brazilian slates all calibrated to 9mm thickness and with an almost flat though riven
surface. All types may show the characteristics and attractive shade variations found in real slate.

Graphite Brazil Probably the finest flooring slate in the world, a charcoal grey some with mid to light grey shading,
supplied in 40 x 40cm £29.36/m²; 60 x 40cm £35.72/m² and 60 x 60cm £40.10/m². This for the most exquisite and
impressive slate flooring you can imagine. A sleek modern serious floor, or the ultimate for a century old mansion
hallway or kitchen. Also available in 120 x 65 x 2.5cm at 36.66/piece or (£47.00/m²) This size can also be graded for
flatness & uniformity for worktops for £58.24 per piece.
Graphite Brazil skirting board. 10cm high, 0.9cm thick and 60cm long. £4.89 per piece.

Cinza Brazil Light grey coloured slate. Makes a really elegant looking floor particularly for smart kitchens. Tile in
staggered lengths. Supplied in 40 x 40cm £26.40/m² and 60 x 40cm £31.80/m².
Cinza Brazil skirting board. 10cm high, 0.9cm thick and 60cm long. £4.89 per piece.
All the slate tiles have the edges diamond cut to size and hand riven to approx. 8 - 16mm thickness. Larger sizes may be
20mm thick or over unless calibrated to 9mm like the Brazilian slate. The variation in thickness is compensated by the
thickness of the bedding adhesive when tiling, grade and shuffle the tiles to thick medium and thin. Start by laying the
thickest tiles on a thin bed of adhesive, and then move on to the medium tiles on a thicker adhesive and finally lay the
thin tiles on a thicker bed. If this method is used you will achieve an overall level floor. Always use the thinner tiles for
cutting. Once the tiles have been laid it is advisable to give them a really good scrubbing and cleaning before grouting
and sealing.

Most tiles usually carry the characteristic colours on one side, the other side being more neutral showing each product’s
basic colour. Therefore most slate tiles offer 2 options when tiled, e.g. more or less colours, depending on which way up
they are laid. Do not be afraid to mix colours however shockingly colourful an individual tile may look. This option does
not however apply to calibrated slate. No two tiles will be identical; a sample must not be taken as a guideline as to
how the floor will look, it is only an indication. The final result will still show each product’s dominant, natural
colour.

Slate is a hardwearing product, centuries old, centuries to go. Natural Slate is durable against pollutants, acid, fire, water,
flooding and general wear and tear and its beauty is enhanced the more it is used, because of this durability most slates
can be used almost anywhere in the home or garden. Slate tiles are also suitable and very inexpensive for kitchen work
surfaces, especially when using the large 120 x 65cm sizes in riven Brazilian Graphite.
Another characteristic of this natural product is its slip resistance which makes it a perfect and safe surface for a
swimming pool surround, or where children and old people are present. Natural slate is virtually maintenance free when
correctly sealed. If slate is laid on an insulated screed it can adapt to the temperature of the room.
Prices for Slate, as shown. The most attractive asset our slate flooring offers, other than its individuality and practicality
is that, with our indiscriminate price structure, it is very inexpensive.

Description of Natural Limestone, Sandstone and Marble tiles for floors or wall cladding
Limestone and Marble flooring has become increasingly popular, in particular the classic creamy beige colours. We have
selected a good quality product range from leading International factories, which we supply at very low prices because
of our bulk purchase power. Please note, as above with slate, no two tiles will be identical, a natural impossibility.
Each tile carries its natural individual characteristics. Remember to always shuffle the tiles before tiling in order
to balance colour and veining differences. Please also measure carefully so that there is a sufficient supply of
product to do the job; additional deliveries may come from different batches not necessarily matching a
previous delivery. Most limestone may be quite wet when supplied (stone is cut using water) and in some cases
can take weeks to dry; hence it may appear darker than a dry reference sample. These tiles will be cut to a
specific thickness within DIN 18 332 standards of tolerance. Remove tiles carefully from crate, avoid edge
chipping, and let dry before tiling and sealing. Some limestone may have discreet `pencil’ lines, which are
natural veins and not cracks. These tiles are NOT broken and will not be replaced by the company, as with
variations of shades in the colour & fossilising in the stone.

Cleaner and Sealants - highly recommended professional products. We strongly advise all our tiles to be
installed by experienced professional stone floor fitters. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions as on labels.
Please note that sealants and impregnators do not produce miracles for example against acid (Lemons, Plumbs
etc) on carbonated stone. These products are developed to work as a repellent agent to prevent spills dirt and
grout surplus from permanently sticking to surfaces and to assist cleaning procedures. Use common sense,
wipe up spills as they happen or place a rug or mat in front of areas that are prone to heavy greasy spills, for
example the cooker also putting felt pads on the feet of dining room chairs can help prevent marking. Apply 1
coat of sealant before grouting and second after. For maintenance and cleaning product use the Neugel
cleaner. Never ever use bleach or acidic cleaning products. We calculate the quantity on the low side combined
with practical experience. Should more be required it can easily be ordered.

Adhesives and Grouts. Always follow manufacturers instructions using a full bed of adhesive with correct
trowel size, do not just dot adhesive on to the back of the tile. You should agree with the tiler the width of joint
to be grouted. Please make sure when ordering the products that they are suitable for the situation, e.g.
underfloor heating, plywood floor, etc. It is recommended that a professional fitter carry out installation. Due to
the tolerances in tiles, allow a minimum joint width of 2mm for 30.5 x 30.5cm tiles, and 5mm joint width for 40 x
40 and larger limestone and marble tiles. We calculate slightly above the minimum quantity required when we
supply adhesive and grout. Apply grout with a narrow scraper or cartridge gun into joint. Do not use floating
grout techniques.

If your substrate floor is an anhydrite (gypsum based floor) then we must be informed as special procedures
must be used or the tiling may fail.

£56 per crate from 16m² up to 30m² depending on product/sizes and about 1 tonne in weight. Over 2 crates, larger
consignments, deliveries to Wales, Scotland and overseas by quotation.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION:
Deliveries are normally made by a 32-34 foot long and 8 feet wide 17 tonne Palletline lorry with a pallet designed tail lift,
as natural stone is heavy. Hence, please ensure that access is available for this size of vehicle. Please also inform
us if there are any limitations such as narrow roads, sharp bends, steep driveways, gateways, legal weight
restrictions etc. If the driver cannot deliver because of this, at his discretion the consignment will be returned to
the nearest depot for a new delivery with a suitable vehicle at a new extra cost. Please note the driver will
deliver to the nearest possible place on the drive or roadside with a pump pallet truck (flat, level tarmac or
concrete surface only – NOT gravel drives etc.) and will not carry the tiles into the house that is the receiver’s
responsibility as is also being present to sign for the goods. Home Counties deliveries may be delivered by a Hiab
crane equipped rigid 3 axel, 26 tonnes gross lorry that is also 38 foot long and 8 foot wide. This will deliver on
conditions as above except where using the crane instead of a tail lift and a pump truck. Owing to the
increasing road traffic we can only indicate from 7am to 6pm deliveries with no specified time.

When ordering please measure carefully as we are not able to accept any returns. It is our principle that we do
not supply customers with any product that has been sent out to a site already. When ordering allow for possible
breakages in transit, handling and for cutting, that is to order an extra 3% for slate, limestone and marble. For aged
antiqued products and travertine’s allow up to 5% for breakages and deep surface veins, fissures and colour variations.
Deficiencies above these allowances must be notified within 72 hours after receipt of product, if in doubt as to
colours, finish etc., tiling must NOT commence. All tiles and products supplied are for domestic use only. (This
information must be read as part of our Terms and Conditions of sale, which you will find, attached to any
invoices sent or upon request)

Payment

All prices are ex warehouse and exclusive of VAT @ 17.5%. A 10% deposit is required when ordering for the
products to be supplied 2 weeks later or more, before the packing of individual orders will take place. All orders must be
fully pre-paid as cleared funds (5 working days) before being despatched or collected from the warehouse. Deposits and
balance payment can be made either by cheque made out to and posted to GMS Ltd or by direct electronic transfer from
your bank to ours; Natwest, acc no: 50518526 – S/C 60-06-18. If we make the delivery, in some instances, the balance
can be paid by Bankers Draft or Building Society cheque to our driver on delivery. We do not accept any credit cards as
we find the charge fees unacceptable.
Orders placed with a deposit, for delivery within 3 months, can be stored free of warehouse costs. Further storage will be
charged at £4.50 per crate.

We reserve the right to change products and specifications without prior notice as we are adjusting our product range
and prices on a monthly basis to meet our customer’s requirements and keep competitors at bay!

Should you wish to use another natural flooring product for other rooms where you would not be using stone,
we can send you information from ‘Natural Image Ltd’, our associated company which specialises in a variety of
solid hardwood plank flooring.
SPECIALITY: Solid ‘Character’ Oak – boards sanded and knots filled - 200mm wide T&G all 4 sides – 20mm thick –
random lengths to 2m+ - £34.80/m² - ask for a sample.

From time to time we stock ‘seconds’ or end of line in slate, marble and limestone, which we sell at a lower rate. This is
due to our own quality control checks once the containers are at the warehouse. However, it is in our opinion that our
seconds should not just be disregarded, especially if the slate/stone is for a patio, pathway, wall cladding, or even a very
rustic kitchen, and we will be happy to advise if the product would be suitable for your needs, So we advise you to call
now and again to see what is available at cut prices. It could also be end of line quality at super bargain price.
