     Opening Reflections

      Our Challenge:

Learning to Handle Differences
... a little test……
  Those of us who focus
 on issues of fairness too
           often
           effect
 agreement by giving in
instead of first using our
full powers of persuasion
         to affect
 a fair outcome that will
  fully satisfy all of our
   legitimate interests

Things are not always what
       they seem…
Dirty Filters………..
Clean the filter …
• we jump to conclusions
• assume that we are right
• but... can often be wrong!

• so……...challenge assumptions
“90% of errors of thinking are errors of perception”
• be open to new approaches and ideas

• sometimes us, sometimes others…..
            I see a
           Triangle!

                       But I see a
                       Rectangle!

No! It’s
   a
Square!
 Keep your Filters Clean!

   There are always at
least three sides to most
        stories…..

It just depends on your
     perspective….
An exercise
A Journey……
Some ideas…..
• don’t judge others • seek reconciliation
• don’t bear ill-will or be • put others’ interests
    resentful above your own
• don’t complain or argue • consider others better
• don’t seek revenge or put than yourselves
stumbling blocks in the • do nothing out of selfish
way of others ambition or vain conceit
• forgive those who have • let he who is without fault
done you wrong cast the first stone
• love your neighbour
A Journey……
“For there is one God and one
 mediator between God and
 men, the man Christ Jesus”

         1 Timothy 2,5
Lessons from Mediation
“It’s not our differences
 that divide us. It’s our
 judgments about each
      other that do”

       Meg Wheatley
Another exercise
What would Jesus say to us?
A story to end with…..
Some final reflections
• informal walks • detoxify language
• many sides to a story • let people be angry
• get in other shoes • who is beneath the
• two ears, one mouth behaviour?
• separate people from the • forgive
    problem • give to gain
• think good things • sacrifice may be
• people are trying their necessary
    best • take a risk
• seek to understand • look for common ground
Remember

• our differences are small
• we are all parts of the same body
• keep in mind the Big Picture
• what would Jesus do?

• God loves us!
“All it takes to change the world
is a small group of committed
               people

Indeed, that’s the only thing that
           ever has…….”
• “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
  called the children of God.”
• (Matthew 5, 9)

• “All this is from God, who reconciled us to
himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry
  of reconciliation.”
• (2 Corinthians 5, 18)
   Thank you
Enjoy the Conference!
