Course Description: The mission of the church is to be the body of Christ by loving God and neighbor and sharing the Gospel for the
redemption of the world. Redemption is God’s holy activity that transforms individuals, societies, and all of life. When faithful to its
mission to be the body of Christ, the church serves as an agent of God’s transforming redemption. Based on this understanding of the
nature of the church and its mission, this course seeks to help pastors gain practical theological understanding for leading
congregations to carry out the mission of the church as God’s chosen agent of transformation.

29th-Mar. 1st), “The Upside-Down Kingdom” for our second weekend session (Mar. 7th-8th), and “Life Together” by our final weekend
session (Mar. 14th-15th). A quiz/test affecting your grade will be given on “The Upside-Down Kingdom” on March 7th and on “Life
Together” on March 14th.

First Class Assignment: (To be turned in upon arriving in class on Friday, February 29th ):

Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder, tells the story of Dr. Paul Farmer, the founder of Partners in Health and a
man with a mission to eliminate tuberculosis and to help poor patients in Haiti. While Farmer is a person of uncertain faith, he is
certainly an agent of transformation in the world, and the mission, work, and structure of his organization has many similarities with
the transformational mission of the church. In fact, there are times in his work as a doctor when Farmer, for all his faults, offers a kind
of secular example of what faithful pastoral ministry looks like. For your first assignment, read Mountains Beyond Mountains
and write a 3 to 4 page, typed, double-spaced paper that includes answers to the following questions: (1) What (besides his
intelligence) do you think makes Paul Farmer such a beloved doctor and such an effective advocate for public health? (2) In
what ways are Paul Farmer’s mission, and the way he accomplishes that mission, similar to the mission and methods of the
church? (3) What can you as a pastor (and the church as a whole) take away from this book that makes you more faithful to
God’s mission of transformation? Be sure to answer each one of these questions, and be sure to refer to specific examples from the
book to illustrate your answers.

The purpose of this assignment is to invite you to see the parallels between Dr. Paul Farmer and his transformational work
and the transformational mission of the church. You are also invited to come to our first class prepared to discuss the differences
between Farmer’s work, his methods, and our own transformational mission as ministers of the Gospel of Christ.

I can’t wait to meet you. Until then, know that I am in prayer for you and your ministry as God uses you to transform
individual lives and our whole world.

                                                                          Grace and Peace, Jeremy
