Panama: Current Economic Conditions Panama - Real GDP Growth 1990 Prices Percent Change, Year Ago • • Economy suffered in 1998. GDP growth slowed from 1997. Runaway inflation is under control since the early 1980s. Prices are stable as consumer prices have risen less than 1% in Panama City. Services sector accounts for roughly 72% of Panama’s GDP. Continued growth of Canal-associated services will lead to greater capital inflows. Should resolve future current account deficits. Equities declined in mid-1998. Russian devaluation. 20 15 10 5 0 -5 -10 -15 80 82 84 86 88 90 92 94 96 98 • • • Source: IFS Panama - Inflation Rate Consumer Price Index Percent Change, Year Ago Percent Panama - Current Account Balance As Percent of GDP 15 10 5 0 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 80 82 84 86 88 90 92 94 96 98 -5 -10 -15 80 82 84 86 88 90 92 94 96 98 Source: IFS Source: IFS Panama - Exchange Rate Balboas per US Dollar PB/US$ Index Panama - Equity Index Panama Stock Exchange Index 800 700 600 500 0.4 0.6 0.8 1.0 400 1.2 1.4 Note: Balboas are pegged to the US dollar 300 200 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 Source: IFS 1.6 100 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 Source: Bloomberg THE AMERICAS V-51 March 10, 1999 www.milken-inst.org Panama: Current Economic Conditions Panama - Official Reserves Total Reserves Minus Gold and as Percent of GDP US$ Billions Percent • • Official reserves at highest level in nearly 20 years.
