Abstract

This paper describes the Sungai Prai bridge which was the winner of the IStructE
Supreme Award in 2006. The judges acclaimed it to be a superb example of bridge
engineering at its most effective and imaginative – a landmark structure for the 21st
Century.

It is highly elegant and economic 1.85 km long precast concrete structure, comprising 57
approach spans of 50m each and a 185 m long cable-stayed main span. A single wide
precast deck consists of a multi-cellular box girder spine with precast cantilevers. The
cantilever units are identical for the viaducts and cable-stayed span.

It is eye-catching both from distance and for close up where textured finishes demonstrate
exquisite attention to detail, which are the hallmarks of it’s designer. It has subtle shapes
and forms which derive from engineering principles but also interest the user.

The structure brought together world class standards of design, engineering and
construction to produce a singular structure which was an alternative design procured by
competitive Build-Operate-Transfer.

Very unusual example of bifurcations entirely made up of precast segments, without even
in-situ joints, with outwardly complex geometry and a curved soffit box girder. The
geometry is facilitated by utilising a family of segments from the same mould to enable a
variety of segments to be cast economically. This was a function of strategic and careful
design at the concept stage fully focused through the design phase.

Holistic design of all elements viaduct and main span resulted in no cost-premium for the
single deck cable-stayed structure over more traditional twin parallel box girder bridges
for the approaches and the river span.
