Introduction

In recent years, when Building Structures for the Future, the greater awareness about global warming and its effect on
future generations has become entrenched in the publics' mind. It will not be too long in the future, when bidding for jobs,
that Engineers will have to demonstrate that their designs are sustainable and green.

The term Sustainable Development was coined in 1987 in 'The Brundtland Report' as 'development that meets the needs of
the present without comprising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' Carbon footprint is an assessment
of the quantity of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide) produced by the choice of structural materials.

For Engineers to enjoy the trust and confidence of the public as the Unseen Hands that make our society work when
Building for the Future, we should not merely talk sustainability and green but do it. We can do it in our designs for the
future and 'Embedding Sustainable Issues into Engineering Education.' (Prof. Paul W Jowitt, Heriot-Watt University)

To paraphrase Thomas Tredgold's 19th century definition of Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering, 'Civil and Structural
Engineering is the art of working with the great sources of Power in Nature for the use and convenience of society.' When
we do this well as the Unseen Hands (the IStructE Centenary Theme for past seminal works by Engineers) sustainable and
green structures are the result.

In a world with countries competing for resources to uplift its own people, the recent spike in prices for commodities has
driven home the fact that the less we use for Building the Future, the more we can share scarce resources without resorting
to unfair practices and even war.
