Paragraph #1- Introductory Paragraph Pick a literary character and fill in the paragraph below 1. Hamlet. Shakespeare’s magnificent prince from Denmark, the ultimate brooding, isolated, and tortured soul. Hamlet is still the most popular play and you can see it from Japan to America. 2. Odysseus. This Greek was quick-witted and crafty (remember the Trojan Horse?), and ruthless as well, this versatile playboy of the Mediterranean world was irresistible to human women and goddesses alike. And who else could shoot an arrow through 12 axes? 3. Don Quixote. This Spanish character was a hero, even if he is crazy. He has influenced everyone from Sherlock Holmes and Watson to Batman and Robin. He would draw his lance and ram it into buildings (windmills). 4. Eve. The Middle Eastern Biblical mother of us all, she is the first to claim humanity’s gift of free choice, for good or ill. Her inclusion does not mean that she is not historical only that she is one of the most famous women in literature. 5. Genji. A Japanese, sword wielding hero of the world’s first novel, this "shining prince" was also talented in the field of romance. 6. Oedipus. This Greek king although written in 427 B.C., has not been forgotten especially not by Freud, who saw in his incest (with his mother) and his patricide (murder of your father) has left all of us uneasy about family dynamics. 7. Don Juan. Another Spanish hero and was the Romeo of Romeos. He is welltraveled and well loved by the ladies and recognized as myth, psychological complex, and archetype. 8. Chia Pao-yu. Hero of China’s greatest novel, Dream of the Red Chamber (1792), He is pampered (spoiled) by his wealthy family, whose machinations (evil plans) place him at the apex of a tragic love triangle. 9. Sherlock Holmes. The most real of modern characters, the English detective couldn’t be killed, even when the author sent Holmes tumbling to the bottom of a water fall, the thousands of loyal readers demanded that he be resurrected. 10. Arjuna. Hero of the Mahabharata, the national epic of India, this master archer conquered in the realms of love, war, and the spirit. Desired by many women, he won his most remarkable wife, in an archery contest.
