Position Overview
The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance (MWPA) seeks an Executive Director to lead Maine’s
statewide literary arts membership organization into the next phase of our development. In addition to
providing overall organization vision, leadership, and management, the successful candidate will have
the experience and talent to design and implement successful fundraising plans, energize and expand
our membership, solidify and secure our information technology infrastructure, enhance our online
presence and community, and design and implement literary programs throughout the state.

Organization Overview
For thirty-four years MWPA has provided a home to Maine’s writers and publishers and in recent years
our membership (currently at about 800) has enjoyed programs such as the Business of Writing
Conference, the Speed-Dating Pitch Session with Literary Agents, the Fall Writing Retreat, the Maine
Literary Awards, and our print publication, Maine in Print. Our current mission is to enrich the cultural
life of Maine by supporting writers and the literary arts. MWPA serves as an information resource for
all Maine writers and publishers.

Essential Job Responsibilities
    1. Provide vision, leadership and management for the organization

    2. Establish, develop and maintain strong relationships with members, donors, the Board of
       Trustees, the Advisory Board, grantors, the USM library and greater community, and the Maine
       arts community

    3. Develop and implement strategic approaches for organizational development and
       programming that will increase membership and attract a stable of dedicated major donors in
       order to grow the organization into a major state and regional resource for writers

    4. Develop and implement a plan for enhancing MWPA’s online presence to engage members in
       all areas of the state, which will include a complete overhaul of our internet technology
       infrastructure

    5. Work with the Board of Trustees on all aspects of fundraising (membership, grant applications,
       major donors, fundraising events, business sponsors, fee-for-services)

    6. Represent and promote MWPA around the state and in the greater New England region

    7. Work with staff and volunteers, including the Board of Trustees, to plan and implement all
       aspects of all programs

    8. Oversee all day-to-day operations, including . . .
          a. office management
          b. financial management, working with Treasurer and Bookkeeper
          c. responding to phone, e-mail, and in-person requests for assistance from members and
              the public
          d. updating the database
             e. updating the website
             f. writing and sending out monthly e-newsletters to members
             g. participating in meetings of the Board of Trustees

     9. Supervise (at present) one part-time administrative assistant and one part-time bookkeeper
        (contractor)

 Qualifications
 We seek a proven, self-motivated leader with a passion for the arts, non-profit management and
 fundraising experience, and a desire to capitalize on a host of opportunities to facilitate the
 organization’s growth. Our ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree (a master’s degree is an asset)
 and possess the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

    • fundraising, including membership development, grant writing, and major donor development
    • non-profit management
    • financial management
    • public relations, including public speaking and presentations
    • strategic planning
    • developing and implementing programs
    • working with or having knowledge of Maine’s literary community

Work Conditions, Salary and Benefits
    • Four-day work week (32 hours), Monday-Thursday, at the 3rd floor office at USM’s Glickman
       Library in Portland, ME
    • Working evening and weekend hours during MWPA programs is required
    • A flexible schedule is encouraged and working from home at times is acceptable
    • $35,000/year, paid bi-weekly (FTE of $43,750 for 40 hours)
    • Health insurance reimbursement
    • 15 days vacation, accrued, 5 can roll over
    • 10 holidays – Thanksgiving, Christmas, Independence Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, New
       Years Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., President’s Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day
    •     5 sick days
    •     2 personal days
    •     Reports to the President of the Board of Trustees

Application and Search Process
The search is being conducted by a team of members of the Board of Trustees. The search team will
accept applications from interested candidates, both internal and external. The timeline is as follows:

    1.    Applications accepted until April 30th
    2.    Applications will be reviewed during the month of May
    3.    Interviews with qualified applicants will take place in late May and June
    4.    Anticipated start date: sometime in August 2010

Please note that MWPA unfortunately does not have the financial resources for covering any travel
expenses for the interview process, nor do we have financial resources to help a candidate relocate.
