					Problem of Evil
INTRODUCTION
 One of the main arguments
                  used by non-believers`-
                  “Evil is the rock of
                  atheism” (Kung)
               1. Moral evil – morally
                  reproachable human
                  actions 2.Natural Evil –
                  Malfunctioning of the
                  natural world
 The consequence of evil is
                  suffering.
                “Clearest indication that
there could not be a god”
                  (Hick)
     The Problem
Either God CANNOT abolish evil or God will not abolish evil.
 If God CANNOT – not all-powerful (omnipotent)
 If God WILL NOT – not all-good (omnibenevolent)
 GOD ALSO MEANT TO BE OMNISCIENT (all knowing)
 Is such a god worthy of worship? (PROTEST ATHEISM)
 It‟s a Logical Problem said John Mackie. Its
FALLACIOUS to believe in the goodness and power of
God and evil‟s existence. Just does not add up.
 Particularly problem for believers in CLASSICAL
THEISM … other religions (eg Hinduism) which accept
variety of gods of assorted character do not have this
    problem.
RESPONSES
      1. NO EVIL – MONISM - EVIL NOT A THING -
           AN ILLUSION
      2. GOD‟S GOODNESS QUESTIONED – IS IT
           THE SAME AS OURS?
      3. DUALISM – THERE IS A DARK SIDE OF
           FORCE – HINDUISM
      4. QUESTION GOD‟S POWER – DEISM – GOD
           CREATED WORLD AND THAT‟S THAT
      5. PROCESS THEODICY = GOD AS CO
           SUFFERER
      6. EVIL AS PUNISHMENT FOR SIN - SEEMS
UNFAIR ON LITTLE CHILD DYING EARLY.
THEODICIES
 A THEODICY = Explains ways of God
    to people
 AUGUSTINE – AUGUSTINIAN
V
 IRENAEUS - IRENEAEAN (up-dated by
    20th century philosopher John Hick)
     AUGUSTINE
1. God is WHOLLY GOOD
2. God creates world FREE OF
     DEFECTS
3. God cannot be blamed for evil
     BECAUSE EVIL IS NOT A
     SUBSTANCE…Instead evil is a
privation or lacking of good. God
did not create evil. Its origins
come from those areas in the
world which have FREE WILL –
     humans/.angels. THESE ABUSED
     GOD‟S GIFT OF FREEDOM AND
     CHOSE TO TURN AWAY FROM
     GOD
4. The desire for power proved too
     much for Adam and Eve
5. Augustine further believed that ALL
SUFFERING IS A CONSEQENCE OF HUMAN
    SIN
6. Natural Evil – originated from the loss of
order within nature following the first sin
at the Fall…this destroyed the delicate
    balance of the world
7. From then on there was ENMITY between
    humans and other creatures
8. THE FIRST SIN CAUSED THE WORLD TO
    BECOME DISTANCED FROM GOD
9. All evil is sin or PUNISHMENT for sin … all of
    us are related to Adam
10. God‟s GRACE sent His Son God to DIE ON
THE CROSS so we would go to Heaven.
11. God is MERCIFUL and JUST – there is
    Heaven / Hell
CRITICISMS
 If humans are created perfect …
    why sin?
 Modern Science and The Fall -
    proof?
 God is all-knowing - why not stop
    this?
 Existence of Hell and God‟s
    goodness?
IRENAEUS „ THEODICY
 God is PARTLY responsible
    for evil
 God creates humans
    IMPERFECTLY…TASK IS TO
    DEVELOP
 Genesis 1.26 – God makes
us in image or likeness. We
    are made in God‟s IMAGE
    image
 We grow to be more in
    God‟s LIKENESS. We are
    given capacity for moral
    and spiritual development.
 We grew through our choices
 World is vale of soul making where we become
    children of God through challenge
 ABSOLUTE GOODNESS needed to be DEVELOPED but
    could not be BESTOWED
 WE HAVE TO DEVELOP THIS THROUGH WILLING CO-
    OPERATION
 Genuine freedom requires possibility of doing good
 Effective environment needs pain
 The process of creation continues in heaven this
    justifies temporary evil.
 This theodicy has been up-dated today by John Hick
and his idea that THE WORLD IS A VALE OF SOUL-
    MAKING
CRITICISMS OF IRENAEUS
 If end result guaranteed in Heaven
    …what is point of pilgrimage?
 Does the end justify the means?
 Why could not omnipotent God use
    better process
FREE WILL DEFENCE
            Significant freedom IS
               NEEDED – Swinburne – toy
               world would be one
               without such freedom
 John Mackie said that is
God was all – powerful God
               could create us with the
               freedom to always choose
               goodness
            Protest Atheism - refuse
               to believe in God because
               of evil
