Nature of the Conference
The National Conference on Interpreting Practice, Pedagogy, and Research is a biennial
meeting of practitioners, trainers, and researchers that serves as a platform to share and
discuss professional developments, training issues, research findings, and other topics
related to interpreting.
Theme and Topics
Professionalization in Interpreting: International Experiences and Developments in China.
Professionalization and professional issues, including the development of interpreting as
an independent profession in China and abroad; the role of government, training institutes,
and professional associations in the process of professionalization; the professional
status of interpreters and their professional standards and professional ethics; quality
assessment, testing, and certification; market demand for interpreting services; and
historical, sociological, and other studies related to interpreting and professionalization,
Training, including entrance examinations, curriculum design, pedagogy, training
materials and equipment, instructor qualifications, and graduation examinations, and
covering training that aims to produce professional interpreters, in-service and upgrading
training for practicing interpreters, the training of interpreter trainers, the training of
interpretation researchers at the MA and PhD levels, and interpretation training in the
context of undergraduate and postgraduate language programs, etc.
Research on any aspect of interpreting in any research paradigm, including cognitive
science, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, discourse
analysis, pragmatics, anthropology, semiotics, comparative cultural studies, cross-cultural

How to register to attend the conference
Please complete the registration form below and return it to the conference organizers
before 30 September 2004. Written confirmation will be mailed to participants upon
receipt of their completed registration form. The conference fee is 600 RMB yuan
(approximately 60 Euros), and is payable upon arrival at the conference.
How to submit a proposal for a presentation
Prior to 15 September 2004, a 350 word abstract (if possible, in both English and Chinese)
should be submitted by e-mail to Madam Jiang Rufang (email@example.com),
together with a curriculum vitae that describes your activities and achievements in
interpreting practice, pedagogy, and/or research.
A collection of abstracts will be prepared prior to the conference and distributed to
delegates upon arrival. Selected papers will be formally published after the conference.
The conference languages will be Chinese and English. For the plenary sessions,
simultaneous interpretation will be provided, and for the break-out sessions, consecutive
and/or whispered interpretation will be provided as required.
