Temperance’s Mount Carmel Parish Celebrating 50 Years in 2010
TEMPERANCE, Mich., April 6, 2010 – Several events are scheduled in the
upcoming weeks and months to celebrate the 50th anniversary for Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Roman Catholic Parish, Temperance, Mich.
“As Our Lady of Mount Carmel has grown through the decades, we have tried to not
only share and teach the Word of God, but to practice it as Jesus taught his followers. The
events scheduled allow OLMC to renew our faith in Him, and to thank all parishioners and
the community for supporting our mission,” said Father Stephen Rooney, OLMC pastor.
OLMC was established as a parish on April 13, 1960, by decree of then Archbishop
John F. Dearden and Chancellor Bernard Kearns. It was earlier, on Oct. 3, 1957, that a
mission church was established in Temperance. A month later in November, the mission
was named Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The parish will have a Golden Anniversary Mass with Celebrant Archbishop Allen
Vigneron at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 12. Following Mass, there will be a reception in the
parish hall where charter members of the parish will be recognized.
Other events scheduled for June and July:
June 13-15: OLMC hosts one of six Monstrances blessed by Pope John Paul II.
The Monstrance will be in the Detroit Diocese for 15 days, and OLMC will
receive the Monstrance on behalf of all parishes in Monroe County. The
Monstrance, displaying the Eucharist for adoration, arrives at noon on Sunday,
June 13, and leaves by noon Tuesday, June 15.
o June 13, 12 p.m. – 9 a.m.: Eucharistic Adoration is to commemorate the
50th anniversary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish.
o June 14: Adoration open to all parishioners in the Monroe area and
begins after the 9 a.m. Mass.
o June 15 marks Fr. Rooney’s 25 years as a priest.
“When we host the Monstrance, it will be the first time our parish has had that
honor,” Fr. Rooney said. “There are only six of them in the world. It will be a very special
way for the faithful to say prayers to and be thankful for Jesus’ sacrifice.”
July 18, 2010 Parish-wide Family Picnic and Pig Roast
o 12 - 4 p.m.: Fun activities, games, and fellowship
o 1 – 3 p.m.: Pig roast and & pot luck dinner
In addition, by late 2010, OLMC will produce a new parish pictorial directory, and
