to keep the colours of charts and text consistent)
The primary colour palette is permanently linked to colours for text, shapes, lines,
chart bars and pie slices

Additional custom colours are provided on the second line of the colour palette –
they are used especially in charts
Secondary colours are not permanent – they will eventually be “bumped off” if you
create new custom secondary colours yourself. However, you should use these
Secondary colours rather than creating your own new custom colours (unless you
are using your clients’ colour scheme)

Tips For A Great
PowerPoint
Creating Effective Slides
Limit each slide to one key take-away – unnecessary words or details can obscure
your message
Avoid using more than eight lines of copy on a slide
Use an agenda to hold your audience’s attention
Charts, graphs, diagrams and illustrations are a great way
to visually communicate your message
Split complex diagrams into build sequences
Keep text and graphics large enough for your audience to read
September 8, 2008 Slide 35
Great Presentations Are Short
It's about quality - not quantity!
Make it as short as you possibly can. Always
gg presentations (
For bigger p )
(12+ slides) follow the "3 T's":
Tell them what
Tell them what
you re
you're going to
Tell them you just told them
tell them
(summary)
(overview)
September 8, 2008 Slide 36
Short
Short: a PowerPoint presentation is not a novel. Keep lines short. Whenever you
can, strive for one-liners
Don't squeeze: do not try to pack in more text per slide by reducing point size! If it
won't fit onto 1 slide, make 2!
Don't read! Bullet-points are… bullet points. They're not meant to be read like full
sentences
Keywords - if you can, move these to the start of the line
If a slide is important, try not to have more than 3-5 bullets
September 8, 2008 Slide 37
Some of the Worst Examples,
Starting with Long Headlines Over 2 Lines
Another really common mistake is to write long and tedious lines as they would
normally be spoken or written in a letter, rather than just summarising the idea as a
snappy bullet point. This is particularly common with people who learned how to
i before P
write b f P i
PowerPoint was iinvented. If you need to write l
d d i long stuff, d ' use MS
ff don't
PowerPoint (a live presentation aid) - use MS Word!
If you can, you should also try to avoid breaking a highlighted point across two
lines like this
September 8, 2008 Slide 38
Doing Highlights
If you want to make highlights for important words within a paragraph of copy, use
the dark orange colour. Use this bolding effect sparingly or it loses its point
You may also use a frame to make special highlights!
And you may occasionally go reverse
September 8, 2008 Slide 39
Animation, Transitions, Sounds and Effects
Sounds are not used at all (except when
required for TVC, music or radio
commercials) - they're usually corny
Do not use slide transition effects at all
Custom Animation effects such as "drive
yp
in", "typewriter", "swirl", etc. are banned!
