 Title:      Requirements for supporting Video Blog service

 1.         Document Scope
 This document proposes to consider Video Blog service as one of IPTV services, and provides
 some functional requirements of IPTV architecture to support such kind of service.
 2.         Introduction
 Video Blog is a popular Internet service nowadays. It provides a means for one to publish personal
 video program on Internet or share information with his friends. Public or friends can view the
 program from his Blog page.
 Usual service flow is as follows:
 1) User visits video Blog service provided by operator, when he or she is going to publish video
    program.
 2) After authentication, system platform allocates session resource for the user, including disk
    resource.
 3) The user uploads video program to the server of operator.
 4) After uploading, user can check, preview, edit and delete the program. The program then is
    forwarded to system administrator.
 5) Having passed audit by system administrator, the program can be published to Internet, at the
    same time it can be notified to his friends by email, SMS or MMS.
 6) Other users can view the recorded program though all kinds of video terminals such as, 3G
    mobile phone, visible fixed phone, PC or TV with STB.
 3.         Discussion
 As we know, IPTV system which supports basic TV services has provided the capability of service
 discovery & service guidance, content delivery,video coding and decoding, it’s easy to develop
 Video Blog service on IPTV platform. The only thing needed to do is to extend the IPTV
 architecture to support video recording ability and accordingly service management ability.


 There are 2 major methods to implement video recording.
 One method is to record program on client-side. User downloads the recording tool provided by
 operator. Before being uploaded to designated server and published to Internet, the program has

been produced and recorded on client’s local hard disk. This is a method adopted by a majority of
Video Blog.
Because video files need a comparatively more storage space, the above method, which need much
more disk space in client-side, has brought limitation to terminals and the scale of service
deployment. It is not suitable for those terminals which have little disk spaces, such as mobile
phones and STBs.
The other method is to record program on server-side. To overcome disk space limitation on client-
side, an up-way channel should be established between client and server, which transport the video
media caught by client-side to server-side timely, and stored on server-side disk.
    The main service flow is as follows:
1) User visits video Blog service provided by operator.
2) After authentication, system platform allocates session resources for the user, besides disk
   resource, a two-way channel is established between client and server.
3) The video media caught by client-side is transported to server-side timely, and the server of
   operator records the received media content in real-time.
4) During the uploading procedure, user can check, preview, edit and delete the program. The
   content is publish on personal Vedio Blog page of Internet after check and conformation.
4       Proposal
This document proposes to consider Video Blog service as one of IPTV services, and provides
some functional requirements of IPTV architecture to support such kind of service.
    1) Extend the IPTV architecture to support video recording ability and accordingly service
       management ability.
    2) Support to establish a two-way communication channel to transport video media between
       client and server
