Introduction

Learning Object Description:
Welcome to the Exonaut Operators Course. Here you will learn how the tool is used to
support exercises.

Learning Object Objectives:
After completing this introductory lesson, you will understand all the topics to be covered in
this course.

Exonaut is truly multifaceted and easy to use and visualises every segment of an exercise from the
sequence of events to evaluation data. The system provides the directing staff with incomparable
possibilities to switch between the big picture and the smallest detail in the planning phase, during
implementation and when evaluating exercises. The network function in Exonaut allows joint planning
between the directing staff, irrespective of where they may be located geographically. The system
provides the directing staff with continuous goal related feedback and precise information at the
appropriate time. Its dynamic nature enables the scenario to be instantaneously adjusted to increase the
realism and efficiency of the exercise. Exonaut gathers together the experiences gained and generates
re-usable data for the future. Evaluation data is made easily available for analysis and can like all other
information be exported in standard formats for spreadsheets and text. Exonaut is extremely versatile
and can be used in a range of areas, such as Live Exercise Management, Virtual Exercise
Management, Constructive Simulation Exercise Management, Experimentation Exercise Management
Training and Educational Management and Gold Level Crisis Management Exercises. Exonaut
provides operational readiness for the training audience and is a guarantor of maximum efficiency in
the planning, execution and evaluation of exercises. Exonaut is tried and tested, and in use by a large
number of armed forces, government authorities and corporations throughout the world with excellent
results.

Exonaut Features
Users of Exonaut enjoy a range of management support features and tools.

The following Exonaut features will be highlighted:

• Training Objective Management
• Exercise Scenario Management
• Document Management

PfP ADL- WG, 2006 generated from a PfPLMS 0.2 learning object
                                                                                                  Page 2

• Evaluation Management
• Resource Management
• Scenario Visualisation tools, Time Axis and Maps
• Advanced Filtering Tools
The Exonaut system is based on existing exercise planning guidelines (NATO) and can therefore
easily be integrated with other applications, such as simulators and C2 systems in order to enhance the
effect of the training. The following technical features should be highlighted:

• IEEE 1516 HLA Compliant
• C2IEDM Data Exchange Possible
• XML Web Service Interface Available
• Web Mapping Service 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 Available
• LDAP (MS AD) Compliant
• Secure Connection (https)
The basics of this Exonaut ADL course include:

• Introduction to exercises and Exonaut
• Logging on to the system
• Setting Training Objectives and Resources
• Scenario Planning
• Evaluating

Question:
What is one of the most important things when planning an exercise?
Option : Deciding on scenario EXCON

PfP ADL- WG, 2006 generated from a PfPLMS 0.2 learning object
                                                                                                  Page 3

Option : Setting measureable training objectives together with the training audience
Option : Creating an advanced powerpoint to regarding the conflict background

The need for an Exercise Management Tool

Note: At this position the original learning object contains an element which cannot be displayed in
                                             the printable version.

• No common EXCON approach towards the exercise planning process. Different planning teams
within the EXCON do things different from one and other.
• Focus on format, not on content
• More input (preparations) than output
• Trained audience repeats previous mistakes
• Fragmented exercise material
When planning multiple exercises the need for recycling of information and best practice is obvious
and a there is a lot of time that can be saved by adressing the below items:

• Reusage of exercise material such as senario material (MEL/MIL)
• Shared experiences from earlier training situations are not transferred to new exercises
• Best pracice cases can not be implemented across organisations quickly
• Coordination and control of training objectives when running a series of exercises

How EXONAUT helps these challenges

By allowing members of EXCON to log on to Exonaut via Internet (or a Local LAN) they are not
bound to any fixed location to work with the planning of the exercise. Therefore members can
instantly access the latest planning information and see the progression of the scenario. Directly in
Exonaut access to previous exercises can be made available thus giving the oppertunity to recycle
older quality assured exercise information into the new exercise.

Exercise Model

PfP ADL- WG, 2006 generated from a PfPLMS 0.2 learning object
                                                                                                 Page 4

Exonaut is developed with a certain model for exercise activities in mind. Utilising the software is best
made following this, which is briefly described in this paragraph. However, these are just guidelines to
give a better understanding of Exonaut and make the best use of it. Finally it depends on the user's
organisation and the size of the exercise.

Question:
By using ________ the EXCON can work within a distributed and effective exercise planning process.
Option : Exonaut
Option : Simulations
Option : technology
