PRIMARY TEACHER AWARD




PURPOSE OF THE AWARD

The Victorian Education Excellence Awards showcase the outstanding achievements
and practice of teachers, leaders and Education Support staff in Victorian
Government Schools.        All of the Awards promote the reputation of Victorian
Government Schools as centres of excellence. Winners will have the ability to
influence teaching and learning approaches and to disseminate outcomes of their
work to benefit our entire education system. The Awards acknowledge endeavours
that build a collective knowledge and recognise innovation that will support enhanced
instructional practice in our schools.

Given the significance, value and prestige of these Awards there is a rigorous
selection process. The achievements of recipients will be celebrated at state level.

Victoria Teachers Credit Union Outstanding Primary Teacher
Award

Award Description

The Victoria Teachers Credit Union Outstanding Primary Teacher Award recognises
excellence in the development and delivery of educational programs in the early and
middle years of schooling by outstanding classroom teachers.

In establishing this Award the Victorian Government is proud to acknowledge the
teaching excellence of primary teachers. Primary teachers make a significant difference
to the lives of their students. Outstanding primary teachers model excellent teaching
and learning practice and recognise the importance of ongoing professional growth.

The Victoria Teachers Credit Union Outstanding Primary Teacher Award aims to
recognise and develop the talent of innovative primary teachers who have demonstrated
excellent teaching practice and made a significant contribution to improving student
outcomes.     The recipient of the Award will have the opportunity to undertake
professional learning in one or more of the following areas:
       Lead a major school-based, cluster or network project
       Undertake research or project work
       Be mentored by or shadow a colleague

The Award

The Award will provide an opportunity for the recipient to identify and undertake
professional learning to address an identified need that will result in improved student
outcomes.

The value of the Award is $10,000, which is to be used to cover conference or seminar
costs, travel, accommodation and casual replacement teacher costs to undertake the
professional learning activity. This activity should be completed by 31 December 2011.

The recipient of this Award is also entitled to one year’s free membership with the
Australian College of Educators (Victorian Chapter) and a further two years membership
at a reduced rate (half cost).

Eligibility

The Victoria Teachers Credit Union Outstanding Primary Teacher Award is open to all
primary teachers currently employed in Victorian government primary, P-12 and
specialist schools.

This award is not available to principal class or teams of teachers.

Recipients of other professional state, national or international awards are not excluded
from consideration for this Award.

Endorsement

All applications must be endorsed by the School Principal and Regional Network Leader.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be judged on the basis of professional excellence and an Award proposal.

Part A: Professional Excellence

Applicants should provide evidence of exemplary and innovative teaching practice with
reference to VELS, PoLT, the e5 Instructional Model or elements of the Effective Schools
Model.

Part B: Award Proposal

Applicants should describe a proposal to undertake professional learning to address an
identified need in terms of:
    •   The key questions to be explored and how these will be investigated
    •   How further investigation or professional learning will benefit the applicant, their
        school community and/or the system
    •   A detailed plan for sharing the outcomes of the proposed investigation
    •   How the proposal will make a state-wide contribution to effective teaching and
        learning practices and improve student learning outcomes
    •   The strategy for evaluating the impact of the proposed investigation.

Referee

In support of an application, the contact details of one referee must be provided. If the
applicant is shortlisted, the referee will be sent a referee template to complete and
return a confidential report. As a general guide, referees may focus on the applicant’s
achievements to date and why the applicant is an outstanding candidate.

Conditions

The recipient is expected to remain in the Department’s employment for a minimum of
two years following the period of the Award. The Award is not intended for post
graduate research study.

Any unused monies must be returned to the Department of Education and Early
Childhood Development.

It is expected that the recipient of the award will promote and share the outcomes of the
professional learning activity with their local network and across the system.

Award recipients are required to enter into an agreement with the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development through a memorandum of understanding.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development reserves the right to use
all or part of any material, including submissions and photographs, for any publicity
campaign related to education in Victoria. Copyright of any materials produced during,
or as a result of the Award is owned by the Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development reserves the right not to
make an award.

Application process

All applications must be made on the Application Form (using Microsoft Word). All
applications will be acknowledged, via email, shortly after receipt. Late applications will
not be considered.

Eligible applicants are advised to complete the relevant award application form and
address all the selection criteria.

Selection panels, established by the Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development will shortlist eligible candidates. Shortlisted candidates will be required to
attend an interview. Selection panels include representatives in the field of education
who will use the criteria to judge applications.
