					First Aid
• What happens if someone is injured in the
  laboratory or workplace?

The action will depend on the type of injury. It
is dangerous to give First Aid if you do not
  know this.

It may be possible to deal with a minor injury
with items that should be ‘standard’ in a First
  Aid box.
• The First Aid Point should be clearly
  labelled in the lab.
• In professional laboratories, it’s
  commonplace to have charts showing
  relevant emergency procedures.
    Common injuries in the lab
          include:
• Burns and scalds
• Breathing in fumes or swallowing chemicals
• Electric shock
• Cuts
• Damage to the eyes

For each of these injuries, you need to find
    out:
what First Aid to give, if any
when you must not give First Aid
• For information, you can try the
agencies that specialise in giving First
  Aid training:

  St. John Ambulance
  British Red Cross
  St Andrew’s Ambulance Association
