					        SPEECH FOR MORNING SERVICE
ANZAC DAY SUNDAY 25 APRIL 2004

THE ANZAC MEN AND WOMEN WE ARE HERE TO
REMEMBER TODAY WERE MAINLY VERY YOUNG
PEOPLE.

THE NAMES OF THE NORFOLK ISLAND RESIDENTS
ENGRAVED ON THIS MEMORIAL – AND IN THE
PHOTOGRAPHS DISPLAYED AT THE RSL CLUB ROOMS
– WERE MAINLY VERY YOUNG PEOPLE.

OUR MILITARY AND PEACEKEEPING OFFICIALS
TODAY IN IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, EAST TIMOR AND THE
SOLOMON ISLANDS ARE MAINLY VERY YOUNG
PEOPLE.

WAR BY ITS NATURE SAPS AND KILLS MAINLY VERY
YOUNG PEOPLE.

TO MAINTAIN OUR VALUES, FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY
AND PEACE IN THE WORLD YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN
ARE CALLED TO SERVE AND MAKE SACRIFICES.

TOO OFTEN THIS RESULTS IN AWFUL DEATH, INJURY
AND FAMILY DISLOCATION.

ANZAC DAY BRINGS US TOGETHER HUMBLY AND IN A
MOOD OF REMEMBRANCE AND RECONCILIATION.

TODAY THE FLAGS OF AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND,
THE UNITED KINGDOM AND NORFOLK ISLAND FLY AT
THIS CENOTAPH TO RECOGNISE OUR COMMON
BONDS. WE KNOW TODAY IS THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THIS CENOTAPH.
WE PAUSE, PRAY AND ACKNOWLEDGE ALL THE
SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN COUNTRIES,
ALLIES, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS THAT SURVIVE THE
PERIODS OF CONFLICT.

EVERYONE OF US GATHERED HERE THIS MORNING
HAS A REASON FOR BEING HERE – THE PURPOSE OF
REMEMBRANCE AND THANKSGIVING. THE LIFESTYLE
WE ENJOY IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE
CIRCUMSTANCE OF SO MANY OTHER STRIFE TORN
COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD.

THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN OUR MIDST ARE THE REASON
WE PAUSE, PRAY AND HOPE THEY NEVER HAVE TO
ENDURE THE EXPERIENCES OF OUR GRANDPARENTS,
PARENTS, RELATIVES AND FRIENDS THAT WERE SO
NECESSARY TO STAND AND FIGHT ON OUR BEHALF.

IN THE SHELTER OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC IT IS EASY
TO FEEL SAFE AND COMFORTABLE – BUT THE
LESSONS OF THE PAST WHICH WE RECOGNISE TODAY
– AND THE REALITY OF WHAT WE SEE ON OUR
TELEVISION SCREENS DAILY – MUST DEMAND OUR
ATTENTION TO BE FOREVER VIGILANT – JUST AS THE
SERVICE PERSONNEL OF THE PAST WERE OUR
PROTECTORS IN BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT.

THE YOUNG ANZAC’S OF TODAY STAND TALL IN ALL
OUR COMMUNITIES BECAUSE THE ANZAC’S OF
YESTERDAY ANSWERED THE CALLS OF THEIR TIMES.
