                                  Private candidate general information
   Definition
Private candidature in a WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examination means that the candidate will
not have a school assessment to contribute to his/her final scaled mark for the course. That is, the scaled mark for the
course is calculated on the examination mark only. Private candidates do not receive a course report.
   Eligibility
Individuals may enrol to sit a WACE examination as a private candidate for the following reasons:
 the school does not offer the course at the required stage (e.g. Visual Arts Stage 2)
 the student is unable to study a pair of course units at school due to timetabling clashes/restrictions (e.g. 2A/2B)
 the person is seeking entry to university as a mature-age applicant.
 the student has not been able to complete the full study load of a pair of units in that course. This could be due to
them transferring, after commencement of Term 2, from another school or interstate where the course was not
        studied.
 the student was sick and not participating in an educational program for at least one term during the year.
A student is ineligible to enrol as a private candidate in a WACE examination if he/she has been eligible to receive either
a grade or numerical school assessment in a pair of course units in the year of enrolment.

   Rules
 There is no age restriction to sit a WACE examination as a private candidate.
 Students cannot enrol to sit the same WACE examination both as a school candidate and as a private candidate.
 Students cannot enrol to sit as a private candidate in an examination where they are a candidate for another stage
in that course (e.g. Mathematics 2A/2B and 3A/3B). Examinations in a course will be scheduled at the same time.
 Students can enrol to sit the external examination in Languages: interstate course (including CCAFL, Background
speaker, Arabic, Hebrew, Modern Greek and Spanish courses) as private candidates as long as they also sit the
external exams in at least three other courses in the same year.
Consequences of enrolling as a private candidate
 Courses entered as a private candidate will not be considered for a sickness/misadventure claim. That is, a private
candidate who suffers a sickness or misadventure prior to or during the WACE examination caused by them, a third
party or the Curriculum Council is unable to receive consideration for their examination mark.
 A student enrolled in a course as a private candidate is ineligible for the award of a course exhibition or special
       course award in that course.
   Procedures for enrolment
 Enrolling to sit a WACE examination as a private candidate is done via a form.
 Completed Private candidate enrolment forms must be received at the Curriculum Council by 23 June 2010.
 A fee of $35 per course is payable. Exemption from payment of the non-refundable private candidature fee is
available, upon request in writing from schools, to full-time Year 12 school age students who can show that, due to
timetabling, the course was not available to them at the school. This option is not available for students where the
course is not offered at the school. An exemption from payment is not available for students who enrol in English
when studying Literature or who enrol in Integrated Science when studying Physics or Chemistry.
 Enrolments received after 23 June 2009 and prior to 6 August 2010 will incur a late fee. During this period, the fee
to enrol as a private candidate is $70.00 per course.
 Enrolment as a private candidate in the 2010 WACE examinations cannot be accepted after 6 August 2010.
 Those enrolling as private candidates for Chinese: Second Language, Indonesian: Second Language, Japanese:
Second Language or English as an Additional Language/Dialect must satisfy the eligibility criteria. Application forms
are available from the Curriculum Council.
 Students enrolling as private candidates for French, German, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese: Background
Speakers, Chinese: Background Speakers, Indonesian: Background Speakers, Malay: Background Speakers,
Modern Greek and other interstate languages (including CCAFL) are automatically classified as background
candidates, unless they demonstrate otherwise, by writing to the manager, certification and examinations by Friday
       6 August 2010.
Responsibilities of schools
Schools are required to sign the Private candidate enrolment form. In signing the form the school is declaring that the
   student:
 was unable to study a pair of course units for which they are enrolling as a private candidate at that school during
        the current year
 is eligible to enrol in the WACE examination for that course as a private candidate
 has been informed of the consequences of enrolling as a private candidate in an examination and understands the
        implication of these factors.

Schools are not required to complete the declaration for students who are applying as a mature-age applicant for
   university admission.
