NEMOURS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to children’s health and health care, with a pediatric hospital in Delaware and outpatient facilities in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida. NEMOURS mission is to provide leadership, institutions, and services to restore and improve the health of children through care and programs not readily available, with one high standard of quality and distinction regardless of the recipient’s financial status. School Action Teams, which already exist in many of Delaware’s schools, typically consist of administrators, teachers, counselors, school nurses, food service staff, and parents, who work together to tackle issues facing their schools and improve the health of their students. We are joining forces with the Delaware Department of Education, school districts, and local schools to promote child and adolescent health based on the Coordinated School Health Model. We are currently working with 11 School Action Teams to implement healthy eating and physical activity projects for their schools, which serve approximately 6,600 children in all three counties, by Helping School Action Teams to make changes in support of healthy eating and physical activity. Promoting youth involvement in School Action Teams to enable youth to develop new skills and to voice their perspective as the teams initiate health programs. Providing staff support, through dedicated Community Health Promotion Specialists who have experience helping groups plan and implement changes. Providing staff support, through dedicated Community Health Promotion Specialists who have experience helping groups plan and implement changes. By valuing and investing in health and wellness today, we can prevent disease for our children and future generations. We want to bring about a cultural change in which people place a high value on health and wellness. While our primary focus will be in Delaware initially, our goal is to eventually become a national resource and model in the area of child health promotion and disease prevention. Your Stokes Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) team (school action team) has been working together with NEMOURS since the beginning of this school year promoting a healthier lifestyle for our students and their families as well as the staff. CSHP received a grant from NEMOURS that helps us keeping the different fitness programs going with incentives for students that are participating in the “Fit for Life” program, Lt. Governors Challenge, and other activities that are going on during the school day. There are several different projects in the works, so keep your eyes open for information that will be sent home in the Wednesday envelope.
