Help Your Community Celebrate Nonprofits T
his November is Nonprofit Awareness Month across the state. How will your community respond? Exciting plans are underway for North Carolina’s nonprofit sector, and we hope you’ll spread the word so that nonprofits from Murphy to Manteo will join in. The idea for this “Many Missions, One Voice” celebration grew out of the priorities voted on at the Nonprofit Congress, a national convening of nonprofits held last fall in Washington, D.C. The North Carolina delegates and others who’ve joined the cause since then are focusing on public awareness and support of the nonprofit sector in our state. The goal of Nonprofit Awareness Month is to educate the public about the contributions that nonprofits make every day in our communities and to help create a better understanding about the value and importance of the sector to our state. In June as part of the Many Missions, One Voice initiative, Craven County nonprofits held a “virtual shutdown” to show what their community would be like without nonprofits. Following a moment of silence, nonprofits of all types announced themselves in a roll call, powerfully bringing home the wide influence and scope of nonprofits in their region. This is one example of how communities can celebrate this November.
Why November? Walter Weeks, executive director of Wake Enterprises and a delegate, explains, “November is a special time in our country when we give thanks for the many people and resources that enrich our lives. What better month than this to raise awareness about the myriad of ways nonprofits enhance the quality of life and sustain our communities?” Resources to adapt for your culture. In the spirit of recognizing the diversity of communities and regions across our state, we’re encouraging nonprofits to choose activities that reflect their unique cultures.
