” … You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but
you cannot fool all the people all the time…”

                                                                            Abraham Lincoln ( 1809 – 1865 )

This statement was quoted many years later by the late Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, in one
of his famous speeches during World War II, at their time of deep crisis, when England was on the brink of being
invaded.
The quotation very aptly applies to the 15th Century tooth cleaning instruction “Brush Your Teeth”. Amazingly
though, it has taken since before 1498, the date the Patent was granted for the first ‘bristle’ made tooth brush, until
this 21st Century to “…cannot fool all the people all the time…”
My advice to you is simple. If ever, whenever, why ever, wherever, whoever from whom you hear, see, sense or
feel advice “Brush Your Teeth”, just walk away from it. Have nothing to do with it. Don’t be ‘fooled’ any longer…….
Please read on to find out why……

St Appolonia became the Patron Saint of Dentistry after she was martyred in
249 A.D. After her death all her teeth were pulled out, some of which are now
claimed to be in churches throughout the world.

   M MAYBE I CAN HELP YOU…
            I BELIEVE I CAN!
What You Drink Can Cause Oral Diseases.

Hi, my name is Garth Pettit.
I have been a general dental practitioner since I graduated from The University of Adelaide, Faculty of Dentistry,
South Australia in November 1953.
I spent my formative years in private practice in Australia. I then went to England and came back to Australia
again before retiring in December 1992.
Throughout my years in dental practice I held the view that oral health education, both for children and for
adults, left much to be desired. I believed that this contributed to the never-ending, high demand for treatment of
easily preventable oral diseases. Retirement offered me the opportunity to delve a little deeper into these matters.
In February 1997 I ended my retirement by filling the vacant position of District Dental Officer for East Arnhem
Land in The Northern Territory of Australia. That position gave me opportunities to pursue a personal project; to
research and to write oral healthcare education resources. I would be working with parents, schools, teachers and
children. I retired again in July 2002.

                                                        1
My ambition was to create resource materials particularly for parents and primary school teachers who I
recognized as children’s ideal oral healthcare and oral health educators respectively. I saw this as paramount because
I believed the dental profession devoted too little time to preventing oral diseases and too little time to researching
new information.

What You Eat Can Cause Oral Diseases.

I wanted to make these resources of use to anyone, even a person untrained in oral healthcare, who was interested
in educating young children in the basics of good oral healthcare. I wanted children to become self-motivated to
prevent the common, easily preventable, oral diseases; tooth decay, gum diseases, bad breath and stained teeth.
Research for these resources made me aware of many inaccuracies regarding the instruction “Brush Your Teeth”.
In fact so many inaccuracies that I concluded “Brush Your Teeth” was a very bad oral hygiene instruction. It did not
always reduce the incidence of oral diseases as intended. Throughout this book I highlight the many flaws in “Brush
Your Teeth”. The current value of “Brush Your Teeth”, an instruction first given before 1498 when the first bristle
toothbrush was invented, given as ‘current’ advice today compares with the current value of ‘care instructions for a
horse and cart’ being given to the purchaser of one of today’s brand new motor vehicles.
Therefore, for children’s oral healthcare education I created a new oral hygiene instruction. An oral hygiene
instruction that would help children to achieve a lifetime of oral health excellence and oral disease prevention with far
greater certainty than ever before. An oral hygiene instruction that was simple, that made sense, that was logical, that
was predictable, that was totally ‘oral’ and that was descriptively ideal. I gave the new oral hygiene instruction the title
“Treat Your Mouth”. I then, logically, renamed a toothbrush ‘MouthTreater’ and renamed toothpaste ‘MouthPaste’.

2 Sensational Smiles – Simple Advice 4 Your Smile 2 Shine From Teenager to Old Age
This book is intended for teenage to old age readers. To you I recommend that you adopt the 21st Century oral
hygiene instruction “Treat Your Whole Mouth”. I recommend you think of your toothbrush as a ‘MouthTreater’.
I recommend you think of your toothpaste as ‘MouthPaste’. My recommendations will help you keep your whole
mouth healthier, will help you keep more of your dollars in your pockets and will help you to keep your smiles from
teenage to old age. This book expands on the “Treat Your Whole Mouth’ concept.
Current statistics from 4 international press releases indicate there are people from 57 identified countries in the
world who have converted from ‘Brush Your Teeth’ to the “Treat Your Whole Mouth’ oral hygiene instruction. I have
personally converted hundreds, probably thousands of people to “Treat Your Whole Mouth”. Two elderly, female
converts have said to me, “Why aren’t you down in the schools telling this to the children”? That is another story.
Sadly, a deafening silence is all I have received from submissions to authorities who could make that happen.
Silence from; International Dental Associations, The World Health Organisation, Government Health Departments,
Government Education Departments( with 2 exceptions). I challenge them all to give their reasons for their silence on
oral healthcare advice that would dramatically reduce the occurrence of oral diseases in both children and adults.
Maybe you can help me? I KNOW you can! Please support my Sensational Smiles Petition: “Oral Health
Education Based on ‘Treat Your Whole Mouth’, Not Based on ‘Brush Your Teeth’, Should Be Mandatory For All
Children”. For petition info visit www.MouthWiseLife.com Click the link Sensational Smiles Petition. Thank you
and please encourage others to support the petition.
