DISABILITY SERVICES: Services to people who are blind or visually impaired AFB for National Industries for the Blind American Foundation for the Blind 44 Montgomery Street Suite 1305 San Francisco, CA 94104 415-392-4845 Fax: 415-392-0383 Jstotland@afb.net Contact: Judith Lurie Stotland, Associate Director of Development Services Provided: Although several blindness agencies located in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama and associated with National Industries for the Blind (NIB) experienced only minimal or no effects from Hurricane Katrina, others were significantly affected. (NIB is a non-profit agency that allocates federal government purchase orders among qualified industries for people who are blind.) NIB reports that the President of The Lighthouse for the Blind in New Orleans believes that the damage to the Lighthouse facilities is extensive. (He has evacuated and is unable to return to New Orleans to fully assess the situation due to the damage and government restrictions.) Most of The Lighthouse’s employees live in the hardest hit areas of New Orleans. He has had limited communications with his agency personnel and none with his Board members. He is currently trying to make contact with as many of his folks as possible and is working with a local radio station for outreach. NIB also indicates that another of its affiliated agencies, LCI (Lions Club Industries) headquartered in Durham, NC, received minor damage at its Hazlehurst facility, but LCI’s primary concerns are with their operations in Gulfport and Natchez, Mississippi. LCI’s Gulfport and Natchez facilities have also been damaged, the extent to which has not been determined. Specific information on several other NIB-affiliated agency facilities cannot yet be obtained. I am also offering other assistance to the New Orleans Lighthouse and perhaps to other facilities. Hurricane Katrina has had a dramatic impact on hundreds of employees who work for the Lighthouse and LCI, the majority of whom are blind. In order to assist these storm victims, NIB will facilitate the collection of Hurricane Relief funds which will be disseminated to the agencies’ employees. NIB requests that blindness agencies wishing to support the employees of affected NIB-associated agencies designate a central point of contact within their organizations to handle the collection of funds. www.afb.org Services for Deaf, Deafened, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind People Deaf Counseling Advocacy & Referral Agency (DCARA) federal tax ID #94-6104039 Community Emergency Preparedness Information Network DCARA 14895 East 14th Street, Suite 200 San Leandro, CA 94578 http://www.dcara.org Contact: Christine Seymour, Regional Emergency Preparedness Specialist - Western Region. christine.seymour@dcara.org, text pager: sweetsigns@sprintpcs.com Services Provided: Throughout 14 counties of the Bay Area and northern coastal California, from the Oregon border to Santa Cruz, DCARA provides: employment Services for deaf and hard of hearing people, in partnership with California EDD, information & referral services, independent living skills counseling, legal systems advocacy, communication access assistance, peer counseling, community education workshops and classes (accessible in ASL and/or with captioning), including computer classes, driver education, sign language classes for late-deafened senior citizens, health and safety, financial planning, etc, Deaf Latino/a program, Deaf Gay & Lesbian Center, Parent Connections - for hearing parents of deaf children, birth to age 5, programs for foreign-born Deaf individuals and families, programs for late-deafened and hard of hearing adults Services for Disabled Persons The Center for Independent Living (CIL) Berkeley, CA: 510-841-4776 ext. 122 Contact: Gerald Baptiste, Deputy Director, CIL Description of Services Provided: lead agency coordinating the accumulation and distribution of wheel chairs for those with disabilities in the hurricane regions Education Holy Names University 3500 Mountain Blvd. Oakland, CA 94619 510-436-1000 www.hnu.edu Contact: Lonnie Morris, Vice President for Enrollment Services Services Provided: Twenty-seven students from Dillard, Tulane, and Xavier Universities are attending classes this semester at Holy Names University, having been displaced from their own institutions.
