International Opportunities Fund
•   Supports initiatives between Canadian and
    international researchers
     – Development Grants (support activities, leading to
       international collaboration): up to $25k (1 year)
     – Project Grants (support research activities of Canadian
       and international scholars.): up to $75k (1 year)
•   2 competitions per year (spring/summer round and
    fall/winter round)
•   2007-08: 197 applications, 65 awards (33%)
•   Next deadline: May 8th, 2009 (Results announced
    September 2009)

Image, Text, Sound & Technology

•   Facilitates use of new digital media, multimedia, and
    text-based computing technologies
     – Research Grants: up to $50k (12 months)
     – Summer Institute, Workshop & Conferences: up to $50k
       (12 months)
•   Dec 2008 competition : 48 applications, 14 awards
    (29.1%)
•   Next deadline: TBA (fall 2009)

Research Development Initiatives

•   Supports development of new ways of analyzing,
    structuring, integrating and transferring knowledge in
    the humanities and the social sciences
•   Up to $40k (for up to 2 years)
•   2007-08: 193 applications, 71 awards (36.8%)
•   Next deadlines: April 7th 2009 (results in Feb. 2010)

Sport Participation Research Initiative

•   Supports policy-relevant research about participation in
    sport in Canada
•   Joint initiative with Sport Canada
•   Up to $100,000 per annum, but not totaling more than
    $250,000 in a three-year period
•   Next deadline: Oct. 15 09 (Inside the SRG program)
                        Notification of intent Aug. 15 09

Environment and Northern Research

•   $12 million in annual federal funding received for new
    SSHRC programming in 2008 and beyond for research
    on:
       –   how the environment affects the lives of Canadians
       –   the social and economic development needs of
           northern communities

Community-University Research Alliances (CURA)

•   Support alliances between community and
    postsecondary institutions to foster innovative research
    & training in areas of importance for Canadian
    communities
•   Letter of Intent (LOI): up to $20k
•   CURA Grants: up to $200k per year (up to 5 years)
•   Application by postsecondary & community institutions
•   The 2008 competition included special calls:
     – Canadian Environmental Issues
     – Northern Communities: Towards social and economic
       prosperity
     – Management, Business and Finance
Community-University Research Alliances (CURA)

•   2008-09: (Formal applications)
     – 39 proposals, 10 final awards (+5 MBF) (38%)
     – 4 other international CURA (Partnership with IDRC)
•   2008-09: (LOI)
     –   35 applications, 20 successful (regular)
     –   21 applications, 12 successful (Environment)
     –   21 applications, 10 successful (North)
     –   74% success rate overall
•   Next deadline for LOI: TBA (fall 2009)

Canadian Initiative on Social Statistics –
       Research Data Centres:

•   Provides access to confidential social statistics housed
    in research data centres in universities across Canada.
•   No monetary value; access to data only
•   SSHRC conducts peer-review
•   Over 40 universities across Canada are involved
•   Over 200 applications per year
•   Apply anytime (results within 8 weeks, from the date of
    online submission)

College and Community Innovation Program

•   Stimulates new partnerships and increased
    entrepreneurship & assists colleges in developing new
    ways of working with local businesses and industries to
    spur innovation and economic growth
•   Joint initiative between NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR
•   Worth up to $2.3 million over five years
•   Next deadline: TBA

Research/Creation in the Fine Arts

•   Develops excellence in research in artistic disciplines –
    architecture, design, creative writing, visual arts,
    performing arts (dance, music, theatre), film, video,
    performance art, media & electronic arts, etc.
•   Up to $250k (up to 3 years)
•   2006-07: 115 applications, 31 awards (27%)
•   Next deadline: TBA (fall 2009)

Aboriginal Research
•   Builds capacity to engage research questions of
    concern to Aboriginal peoples in ways that capitalize on
    knowledge, experience and traditions developed
    among and in partnership with those peoples
•   Development Grants: up to $25k (up to 2 years)
•   Research Grants: up to $250k (up to 3 years)
•   applicants from universities, colleges; Aboriginal &
    community organizations
•   2007-08: 26 awards, 65 applications (40%)
•   Program evaluation available online
•   Program will be re-launched in June 2009
