Info from NH Fish and Game which sponsors programs for getting kids back into nature and supports the federal legislation 'Leave No Child Inside'. The second table is to provide space to draw your favorite outdoor memory (forkids and the adults that are kids too)...a main theme running through the book is that older generations have favorite outdoor memories of being able to wander and be pensive in nature - the current generation is loosing that ability to connect with the outside for many reasons. In order to meet human needs fairly we should place more value on the time we spend outside as a family, as a school system, as a recreationdepartment, etc. New Hampshire Dept. of Environmental Studies Alicia Carolson and Barbara McMillian pip@des.state.nh.us 29 Hazen Drive Concord, NH 03301 (603)271-2975 They will have information and activities on supporting our water systems and soil. Nelson Farms Shawn Stimpson sustainablefarmproducts@hotmail.com PO Box 1 Strafford, NH 03884 (603)664-5151 or (603)842-2278 (cell) Sustainable Farm Products, managers of Nelson Farm, sculpts its lifestyle and practices around the principles of permaculture. Permaculture is a system of agriculture or horticulture that relies on renewable resources by enriching a self-sustaining ecosystem. Nelson Farm is a certified organic farm nestled in the mountains of Strafford, NH. In our greenhouses, fields and gardens we enhance our environment. We build healthy and productive soils by means of crop rotation, cover cropping and an enthusiastic composting program. Together this allows for the absolute absence of toxic petroleum based fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. We promote biodiversity due to our implementation of beneficial insects as well as our educated seed selections. Our selections focus on heirloom varieties that risk extinction from corporate companies such as Monsanto. Conversely, we pay close attention to distributors that DO NOT support genetic modification. We choose to only buy from reputable small family-owned or employee-owned companies that promote beliefs similar to ours. We realize that a sustainable food system is the pedestal, which supports life and growth, and that the dependence of food to a finite resource is dangerous as well as impractical. Given our short growing season along the 43° latitude, we have done much to help extend our growing season through winter. Each year we come closer to closing the loop and creating a year-round growing and harvesting season. Our greenhouses are the cornerstones of this objective. We use waste oil furnaces to heat our greenhouses. We collect used vegetable oil from restaurants in the area, filter and burn the oil to heat water. The water circulates through tubes to warm our soil and allows us to grow gourmet, baby greens throughout the winter and then get a head start on our summer crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. This operation is mitigating the farm’s dependence on fossil fuels as well as helping to promote consumers to eat locally. Salads are great in January but they are greater when they are fresh and produced with sustainable local methods. PL Bake Sale PL will provide a variety of sustainable foods to the Fair from food vendors and caterers that emphasize the use local, fresh and sustainable products.
