Aurora Distribution – Feeder Performance
Every customer is connected to a Feeder. A Feeder is the connection from a
sub-station through wires, transformers etc to a customer.
A feeder’s performance can be measured in a number of ways, the most
common being:
SAIDI (System Average Interruption Duration Index)
SAIDI is more commonly known as “average customer minutes
off supply” and is generally reported over a one-year period.
It is the total on average interruption duration in minutes per year
experienced by customers for both planned and unplanned
interruptions.
A SAIDI of 150 minutes means that customers connected to the
feeder or supply area being measured experience an average
150 minutes off supply in 12 months.
SAIFI (System Average Interruption Frequency Index)
SAIFI is a measure of how often an average customer loses
supply during one year.
A SAIFI of 2 means that the average customers connected to
the feeder or supply area being measured on average lost
supply twice during the past 12 months.
The Tasmanian Electricity Code sets average and lower bounds
requirements for both SAIDI and SAIFI and states that Aurora must use
reasonable endeavours to ensure that the total duration of planned and
unplanned interruptions to the supply of electricity to a customer does
not exceed on average the average reliability values set below and that
no more than 5% of all feeders in a supply area category exceed the
lower bound of reliability.

and Launceston)
Urban/suburban 120 mins 240 mins

Other areas (eg rural) 480 mins 720 mins
SAIFI

Urban/suburban 2 4

Based on these definitions Aurora assigns each feeder a colour code taking
into consideration its actual performance and its supply area category.
• A green feeder is performing above average reliability standards,
• A blue feeder is performing below the average reliability standards,
• An orange feeder is close to the lower bound (within 80-90%), and
• A red feeder is performing below the accepted lower bounds for
performance.
Thus, if you are connected by a red feeder then you may be experiencing
significantly poor performance. The colour coding of a feeder is related to
average performance of all customers on a feeder. Thus, although a few
customers at the end of a feeder are experiencing poor supply, the feeder
may still be rated green. On the other hand some people on a red feeder
may not be experiencing any supply problems at all.
For the purposes of reporting, Aurora has broken Tasmania into 19 regions.
The feeder performance in each region is presented in the following figures.

Customers are reminded that under the terms of the Tasmanian Energy Code
(TEC – 8.3.7 (a)(2)) they can request information on the characteristics of the
individual feeder to which they are connected. Please direct any questions to
