OFFICIAL OPENING OF MURAL AT BERKELEY POOL
Media Opportunity: Official opening of Mural depicting giant grandstand with
crowd cheering people at Berkeley Pool.
Date: Saturday, 11 December 2004, commencing 12 noon.
Venue: Berkeley Pool, corner of Winnima & Matilda Way, Berkeley.
Berkeley Pool patrons will enjoy their local swimming facility even more this Saturday, (Dec 11)
when a mural at the entrance to pool is officially unveiled.
Wollongong City Council, in partnership with TAFE NSW, has funded the mural which has been
painted onto boards before being installed at the pool.
The mural, which creates the illusion of a giant grandstand with a huge crowd cheering patrons of
the pool, is a joint effort by over 420 children from three Berkeley Primary Schools and a number of
women involved in the Work Opportunities for Women (WOW) Mural TAFE Course.
The design of the mural was instigated by the children, the women’s group and their TAFE WOW
Coordinator in response to ongoing problems of graffiti at the pool.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Alex Darling, said the mural will beautify the swimming facility which
is a valuable recreational venue for the Berkeley community.
“This project shows what we as a community can achieve by working together. A facility which has
been a target for graffiti is now a work of art which we can all enjoy,” Councillor Darling said.
The official opening will involve a sausage sizzle and a social game of volleyball for children.
Berkeley Pool is open from 6am to 7pm.
