               e-News December 2008

           From the Director

I hope that this opens doors with members to discuss what they truly value in life.
This is the time of year when I reflect on the past and set some goals for the upcoming year. I am trying to
focus on the WHY (My core values in life) rather than the WHAT (The New Years goals). How do you make
wise choices when it comes to your diet, the way you manage your time, your career or your long-term life
plans? If the recent financial markets have shown us anything it is that our best attempts at being wise may
not be wise enough. Life throws us all some unexpected curve balls and I believe that time spent reflecting
on values will produce a better result in the choices we make. The core values that are helping me set my
goals this year are: my belief in a loving God, family, and a passion for leadership. We would love to hear
about your personal values and goals so that we can encourage you and your family this next year.
We would like to thank the 650 members who took the time to participate in our survey, and
congratulations to our big winners: Bruce Choy and Chris Garcia. We are excited about reviewing the
information so that we can better serve you. We are seeing common threads between your response and
the heart of the staff with values like family, community, and customer service.
Please spread the love and tell a friend about the membership special we are offering through January!

           Tennis Anyone?

A new USTA 7.0 Mixed Doubles League is starting now at PCC. We are looking for Men and
Women in the 3.5 level (3.0 & 4.0 may be ok). Contact Coach Sid as soon as possible if you are
interested in being a part of this league. Season runs Winter/Spring. Check the USTA website
or contact Sid for more information.

We had a great turnout this year at our annual Family Turkey Tournament at PCC. Adults
played doubles with juniors, either their child or one they were matched with, and there was
some great tennis, food, a raffle for a donated massager, and lots of fun going around.

This year's tournament was a fundraiser for PCC's Life Advantage Tennis & Tutoring program,

and we were able to raise about $500 for tennis scholarships. In addition, the prizes this year
were donations of turkeys for a Holiday Basket program at Roosevelt school (where we are
planning to have some LATT programs), and side dishes for PCC's Thanksgiving brunch
outreach, which also feeds the homeless.

A special thank you to the following sponsors:

This year we also added a USTA sanctioned portion of the event. PCC's own Sid & Shep
Newcomb won the Father-Son Doubles match, and Joel Martinez-Frias & Blanca Martinez-
Cobian won the Father-Daughter match. Congratulations!

We have some new part-time tennis staff that you may have seen on the courts. Alex Hardenbrook

for high school and college students at various clubs on the East Coast. She will be teaching some of the
junior tennis programs in the afternoon and attending some of the ladies play days. José Avalos, who was
a coach with our tennis camp this summer, will be teaching lessons and subbing in our junior program. He
currently also runs the PE program at Green Oaks Academy in East Palo Alto, and teaches an afterschool
program there as well called Dexterity Sports and Literacy. Be sure to say hello when you see them!

           Junior Olympics

December 5-7th was the Pacific Swimming 14 and Under Junior Olympics Championships at Oceana High
School Pool in Pacifica. PCA took six swimmers to swim in the three-day extremely competitive meet:
Adam Fecher (14), Jordan Tang (14), Vanessa Staton (14), Elizabeth Staton (11), Megan Schiel
           (13) and Michael Ma (10). The long and stuffy indoor meet made it an interesting situation for fast
swimming, but PCA's swimmers came through with best times in many of their swims. Amongst those who
swam in the meet, Michael Ma (10) made finals in two of his three events on Saturday, and all three of his
events on Sunday; placing third in 50 Backstroke and fourth in 100 Fly. He also achieved a new PRT (Pacific
Recordable Time) in his 100 Breast Stroke. Great Job to all those who swam!

           Winter at PCA

PCA's younger swimmers are now entering into our Winter Session. The cold outside
temperatures have not seemed to deter them from the warm water!Green, Red and Ruby
groups are practicing through December 18th and then begin again January 5th. There is still space
