Stage One: Introduction and Interview

Stage Two: Personal Long Talk

Stage Three: Two-way Discussion

/i:/
/i/

如 class, glass, fast, last 甚至 half。
相练习/i:/

例如,在回答“Are you working or studying”这
“I study in Tsinghua University, one of
the top universities in China. And my major is computer science. I like this major
very much”或者“I work as a secretarial staff for IBM. I‘ve been doing this work
for years and I still like this job.”

What are the most popular birds in China and
what meanings do they have?”
官:“I don‘t really know much about birds.”或者干脆说:“I don‘t know.”
一个简单的转嫁技巧:“but one of my friends is crazy about birds, and he used to
tell me...”

―I don‘t know‖可以用来称呼凡事总是 ―I don‘t know‖的哥们儿。
谈一样有用的设备,我就会说“well, I am going to talk about my little girlfriend
then…”
“…my iPod, a very trendy mp3 player and also a very useful electronic device,
which I would always take along with me wherever I go.”

可以讲“my car became ‗hungry‘ on the way”,同时把自己双手的食指和中指举

Stage I Introduction and Interview

Name:
1. What is your full name? How should I address you? How should I call you?

My full name is XXX. And my English name is Jennie. You are welcome to call me
Jennie.

2. Does your name have any special meaning or significance?
Yes, it does have a special meaning. Literally it means to travel as far as beyond the
stars.

What‘s more, this name was given by a fortune-teller and he said with this name I
would marry a great guy.

I don‘t really know. It is given by my grandfather. I guess it means to travel as far as
beyond the starts, because he also wanted me to become a great and successful person.

3. Have you ever changed your name? Why or why not?

No, I haven‘t. I‘m very happy about my Chinese name. And I guess I am never going
to change it.

Well, yes. The previous name I had just sounds so silly. It is even close to the Chinese
word for ―baboon‖. So in order to avoid continuing embarrassing myself, I changed it.
And now I‘m happy about my current name.

4. Do Chinese people like changing their names? Why or why not?

In my personal opinion, generally Chinese people don‘t like changing their names,
because to most people names are just symbols, though some people do believe names
can affect the course of their life. In that case, if they are not content with who they
are or what they have, they may change their names.

What kind of people like changing their names?

Well, generally Chinese people don‘t like changing their names. But if they do, they
must believe names are important to them, more than just symbols, or somehow
carries a significant meaning to them. Among them, of course, some people are just
superstitious.

What‘s their purpose in changing their names?

It is hard to say. But as far as I know there are two major purposes. Number one,
people change their names to make their names sound better. Number two, they
change their names in order to change their destiny, because they believe names can
affect the course of their life, no matter it is superstitious belief or just a willful
thought.

Well, this is a big question. As far as I know, I don‘t think Chinese people like to
change their names often. Because most people believe names are just symbols. They
don‘t change anything. And destiny is in their own hands to make.

5. In your culture, do women change their names when they get married?
I know it is quite common for women to take on their spouse‘s family name in other
cultures. But in my culture, that is not the case—women often keep their maiden
name even after getting married. But the children will follow the father‘s surname.

Studies:
1. Are you working or studying?
I am currently a college student. I am studying computer science in Tsinghua
University, one of the top universities in China.

I am working for IBM as an administrative staff. I‘ve been doing this job for many
years and I still like doing it.

2. Tell me something about the school or university you attend.

Sure. I‘m always excited to talk about my university, Tsinghua University.
Established in the early 1900‘s by the Qing Dynasty, it has now become one of the
top ranking universities in China and well-renowned in the world. Located in the
northwest of Beijing in Qinghuayuan ,once a royal garden, it enjoys a marvelous
natural environment. The campus is really big. It is home to more than ten thousand
undergraduate and graduate students. In terms of learning and research, Tsinghua
university provides the most qualified faculty anywhere in China, and the best library
and research facilities. The last thing I would like to mention of Tsinghua is that it has
a long tradition of sending students to study overseas. Not only that it was first
established as a preparatory school for students to study in the US, but it also sends
over a thousand students each year to study abroad, US, Australia and other countries.
Thank you.

Well, of course. I study in XXX University. It is one of the largest and best
universities in central China. It has a very big and nice campus. Though the university
has been established for a long time, many of its old buildings are now replaced by
new and modern ones. With lawns and trees everywhere, the environment of the
campus is really good, making it a good college experience for everyone who studies
here.

Tell me something about your primary school.

The name of the school is XXX Primary School. It is not far from where I where I
used to live. It is a rather small one with only two buildings, the main teaching
building and an office building. There is also a playground behind the buildings with
several gym bars and a sand pit. I guess that‘s all I can remember now. Thanks.

Well, I don‘t remember much but just a few things about my primary school. First it is
rather a small one with a size of 20 students in each class. And there were only three
classes on each grade at that time. Then the playground behind the main building is
also very small. I faintly remember that there were a few things students could play
with: a swing, a sand dune, and a few other things. I used to stay at school to play
there until my parents come to take me home. That is pretty much of what I remember.

Sure. It is one of the best primary schools in my hometown. To get into this school,
one must meet certain qualifications and pass an entry test. But it is certainly worth
fighting for to get into this school, because the teachers there are very experienced
and patient, and almost every graduate from this school can get into the top schools at
higher levels.

3. What is your major?
I major in Business Administration. And I find business is a fascinating world to
explore. I am studying hard and hopefully one day I‘ll become a successful
businessman.

4. Do you like your major and why?

Yes, of course. I like my major primarily because I am very much into computer
science. Since young I‘ve always been fascinated by the stories of future technology,
robots and super-computers. Secondly, IT is a huge market with wide profit margins.
It has created a new generation of billionaires. It is promising major that is bound to
bring me a good career in the future. That is precisely why I like my major.
Not really. Actually I didn‘t choose this major for myself. My parents chose it for me.
In addition, I find all the subjects I have to study for this major very boring. I don‘t
think I can learn much from them.

Notes:如果喜欢,不要简单的说“I just like it”,要有充分的理由,展现出自己

5. What courses/subjects do you study?

There is a wide range of courses I study. Some are compulsory while others are
optional. The two major compulsory courses are College English, including intensive
reading, extensive reading, speaking etc., and College Math, including calculus,
probability and statistics and so on. In addition, I also have chosen to study Art
History and Psychology, which can all enrich my understanding of human mind itself
and the great works of human mind.

English,
Art History, World Religions,
Psychology。

6. What is your favorite course/subject?

My favorite course/subject is XXX, because, number one, it is very interesting.
Number two, it is not very difficult to study. Number three, it is also very useful.

What is the most useful subject/course?

I think English is most useful subject. Because today communication plays such an
important role is people‘s lives, especially when the world is becoming a global
village, where English is the primary spoken language. And thus to be well trained in
speaking English gives one person more opportunities than those who can‘t speak
English.

It is really a hard question. Though I don‘t think all subjects are useful, yet I do think
most of them can be useful in different ways and in different time. Nonetheless, I
would think of communication skills as essential for one‘s social and academic life;
since English has become the generally accepted language in global communication, I
would say English, as far as I‘m concerned, is the most useful subject.

7. What would you like to do in the future?
I would like to see myself becoming a great businessman, using my brain to make
money. I would always keep myself motivated to learn new things, to improve in all
aspects of my business management. This may take me years to achieve. But I‘ll
never give up, for without vision people perish.

I haven‘t fully planned it out yet. But I guess I would like to be an accountant who
works in an ordinary accounting firm, for I don‘t like too many ups and downs. I just
would like to lead a simple and ordinary life.

老题:
What are the characteristics of schools in China?

Most Chinese schools, whether primary, secondary or college, are all very big in
terms of student population, which I think is due to the large general population in
China. In addition, most of the schools are public schools, though we have seen lots of
private schools even colleges springing up in recent years.

What kinds of majors are available in China?

There are two main categories of majors: arts major and science major. Under the
category of arts, there are business, law, language and literature for example. And
under science, there are math, psychology, material science, computer science and
many others.

engineering,mechanic engineering and design 等等。

What do Chinese people think about teachers?

Teachers are generally respected in China. And there is even a saying in proof of this,
―a teacher of one day is a father of a lifetime.‖

Teaching is a very respectable profession in China. Because the traditional Chinese
culture puts an enormous amount of emphasis on education, teachers are even dubbed
a name ―the engineer of human soul‖.

Is teaching a popular job in China? Why or why not?
Well, I believe it is a popular job in China. First and foremost, teaching is a highly
respectable profession in China. There is even an old saying in proof of this, ―a
teacher of one day is a father of a lifetime.‖ Furthermore, teachers are also very well
rewarded in many ways, both economically and spiritually.

Work:
Are you working or studying? Are you with a job or still a student?

I‘m working for IBM as an administrative staff. I‘ve been doing this job for many
years and I still like doing it.

What do you do for a living?

I work for a real estate company as a real estate agent. It isn‘t a very difficult job, but
I‘m satisfied with it, because I can earn enough for my family.

该问题相当于 What do you do?或者 What‘s your job?

How long have you been doing this job?

I took this job right after my graduation from the college in 2002. So far, 5 years.

Do you like your job? Why or why not?

Well, yes I do like my job. First, I like the stuff I do at work, managing human
resources. It is what I was trained to do back in the college. In addition, it is also very
challenging. But it is a good learning experience. Finally, it pays well.

Do you find your job interesting?

Yes and no. It is interesting because there are lots of things I can learn. No, because
once I‘ve learned them all and have been doing the same task for too long I‘ll get
bored.

Honestly, I am rather bored with my work. Everyday I keep coming to the office and
do the same office chores for eight hours. It is that kind of exciting or stimulating
work.
作很激励斗志,或者工作单一乏味(doing the same office chores over and over

What are you main responsibilities? What exactly does your job involve?

As a senior manager in my company, my main responsibilities include participating
actively in the development and execution of company‘s strategic planning. In
particular, I also have to manage the annual budget development process and track the
budget performance of all funds on a monthly basis.

As you can see, I am just an ordinary office staff. So I don‘t have many
responsibilities, but to run some office chores, such as photocopying documents,
delivering files to another department or picking up a business partner of the company
from the airport, that sort of thing.

Is working important to you?

It is very important to me to work. You know, each one needs to have a meaning for
life. And I need to, through my work, create more wealth for the society and provide
for my family.

Does bird fly? I am the only person in my family who brings food on table.

Have you received any training related to your work?

I‘m afraid to tell you ―no‖. The company I work for is a rather small one, and since
the daily tasks are not very complex or difficult, new employees don‘t really need
training as long as they meet the entry qualification.

I received most of my training on the job. When I first began my work, I relied on
what I learned in college. Now I am learning many new things from my peers,
supervisor and sometimes the training sessions scheduled once a month.

Tell me about your boss/colleagues.

My boss is a rather legendary figure. He first came to Beijing in his very young age
and led a very difficult life here. Then he put all the money he‘d earned by that time
in XXX business and started his small company. Though in the beginning it was not
very smooth for him, he kept on until finally he succeeded. He is an icon for success
in company that stimulates and drives people to achieve their own dreams by hard
works.
My colleague is a very funny person. He seems to have endless jokes and stories to
tell. His sense of humor keeps the atmosphere in the office light and easy. To have
him working on the team definitely helps to relieve stress.

What would be your ideal job?

The perfect job for me would be freelance sports news reporter. That way I could set
my own working hours and still the best thing I would like to do.

I‘d like the ideal job of a lifetime for me to be film actress, because I love the career
of acting. It is always exciting, motivating and rewarding, and I enjoy the feeling of
being the focus of people‘s eyes.

If you could choose another job, which would you choose?

If I could switch to another job, I would work in the field of human resources. Over
the years, I have become increasingly interested in promoting better understanding
within the workplace. I think I have a real knack for working with people.

If God‘s willing, I would choose to become a medical scientist, because I‘ve seen so
many afflictions diseases have wreaked upon humanity. I would like to minimize
human sufferings caused by disease through my research and discovery.

could,would,might 等词。

Hometown:
Where are you from?

I‘m from XXX in XXX province in Northeast China.

Where is your hometown?

My hometown, XXX, lies in the central north of China. It is a small city near
Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan province. It takes only three hours to drive
here.

Tell me about your hometown.

My hometown Zhengzhou is the located in the heartland of China. It is a marvelous
place to be. To begin with, the cityscape is magnificent/gorgeous/breathtaking. Lawns
and stylish skyscrapers abound in the city; beaches are filled by people and tourists
from around the world; and there are even buildings left from the old days: exotic,
Baroque style colonial buildings. Besides, the city is absolutely dynamic with plenty
of/tons of/an awful lot of job opportunities. Last but not the least, it is rated by the UN
among the top 10 most suitable places for mankind to live. I love my hometown.

Beijing is a no less a metropolitan than New York. Located in north central China and
with a population of more than 15 million and its fast growing economy, Beijing has
become one of the most attractive cities in the world. What‘s more, the city is also
rich in history and culture. Each year it attracts to itself more than ten million visitors
from around the world. The Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Summer Palace
are among the most visited places. Beijing is also an education center. There are lots
of universities here, among which are the well-know Tsinghua University and Beijing
University. Nonetheless, Beijing is not that perfect. Because of the environmental
damage, deforestation, loss of surface soil, etc. for example, caused by the fast
growing industries in some nearby areas, Beijing has also suffered from its
aftermath—sandstorm. Beijing is a great city, but for it to remain great it calls for
conjoint efforts from every single citizen in this great place.

What‘s your favorite thing or place in your hometown?

My favorite place in my hometown is the city museum built on the great historic site
of the capital of the ancient Shang Dynasty. The museum houses many unearthed
objects that remember the old past. There are bronze objects, potteries and jewelries. I
like this place because it gives me a sense of honor that I was born in a great nation
with a big history and that I can also do great things if I work hard and learn from
history.

My favorite place in my hometown is the central park. Though it is not a big one, it is
quite a picturesque one. There is a river flowing through the park with thick willow
trees growing on both banks. There are also small hills in the park with pavilions on
top. Anyway, it is just a nice place to have an outing or to walk in.

What is famous about your hometown?
My hometown is famous for many things, such as its beautiful sceneries, royal
gardens and its booming industry.

Well, I am not sure what my hometown is really famous for. But a lot of people like
the local food there. There are Crab Baozi, Shrimp dumpling and many others. So I
guess my hometown is at least famous for its local snacks.

for…,be home to …,… is/are the greatest attraction(s)等。

Tell me about some scenic spots in your hometown.

The Xihu Lake is among the greatest attractions in my hometown. Surrounded by
mountains on three sides, its natural beauty with the old and new ten greatest sites has
been marveled at by millions of people, including the famous poet Sushi, who
presumably had seen them all and wrote, ―It fills me with awe. It is beyond any
description and absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world.‖

What are the main places of interest in your hometown? What places should
foreigners visit in your hometown?

There are the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. These two are among the most well-
known and shouldn‘t be missed by anyone who comes to visit Beijing. They are
symbols of Beijing and attract most visitors each year, but there are quite a lot other
famous sites in Beijing as well.

Do you like your hometown? Why or why not?

Is ice cold? It is where I was born and grew up. There are so many memories there. It
is such a strong feeling that I can‘t get separated from my hometown, no matter how
small it is, how underdeveloped it is. It is just this feeling that springs from the bottom
of my heart that compels me to love it and always love it more.

Yes, I do like my hometown. It is a small and quiet place. You‘ve got everything you
can imagine of a perfect town, river, hills, woods, clean streets and nice people, etc.
How can anyone ever resist falling in love with such a picturesque town?

Well, I can hardly say yes. The major reason is its badly polluted environment. The
local factories emit lots of waste gases into the air and pour tons of chemicals into the
water each day. The worsening situation of sand-storm and the fast growing local
industry only aggravate the environmental problem. Anyway, I just can‘t see my
hometown as an environmentally safe place anymore.
is the best”。

What is the difference between your hometown and Beijing?

My hometown is different from Beijing in many ways. First and foremost, in terms of
population my hometown is definitely much smaller. Second, my hometown is a new
regional industrial center, while Beijing has been the national center for not only
industry, but also transportation, education, and politics for a long history. To sum up,
these are just two examples from the many differences between my hometown and
Beijing and there many others for one to explore.

What are the people like in your hometown?

There are always many different kinds of people everywhere. But in my hometown
people are mostly very simple, friendly and hospitable, yet a bit conservative. They
still hold on to a lot of old customs and traditions, which is what I mean by
conservative. But if you ask someone for directions, they will always try to help you,
or find someone else who can.

If you could change one thing about your hometown, what would it be?

With the support from the people of my hometown, I would like to open more schools
or even a college in my hometown, because the present schools are already
overcrowded, with an average size for each class at over 80 students. So to ensure
each student in my hometown receive quality education, a quick action must be
taken—to open more schools.

What attractive pieces of architecture are there in your hometown?

There are seven beautiful gates that mark the seven entrances into the city. They are
well preserved and represent the architectural art of the Ming Dynasty.
I don‘t know any other magnificent buildings in my hometown but St. Sophia
Cathedral. Standing in the central square in Harbin, it is an old Russian Orthodox
Church building built during the Russian occupation. Its architectural beauty and
magnificence attracts hundreds of thousands visitors each year. It is one of the
symbols of my hometown—Harbin.

Is your hometown a good place for young people to live?

Yes, because: number one, my hometown is an education center; there are many
schools and universities there; number two, it is also full of opportunities; after
graduation from the school, one can easily find a job that fits him or herself; number
three, it is also a city of excitement; there are always things for the young to do and
places to explore; what you have to do is just to ―dig‖ a little deeper.

No, because: number one, pollution is a major problem for big cities like my
hometown—the air is dirty and the water is not safe to drink before boiling; number
two, it doesn‘t have a neighborhood as safe as that of many small cities; it isn‘t wise
to be wandering around when darkness sets upon the city; number three, though there
may be many job opportunities, it is rather stressful as well; the higher one goes up
the corporate ladder, the more stressful it becomes that one might finally burn him or
herself out just like that.

事物都有两个方面(each coin has two sides),无论家乡是否适合年轻人居住,

Weather and Climate
What type of weather do you like?

I love sunny days with azure skies. So I can do a lot of outdoor activities.

I love cold weather and particularly enjoy it when it snows.

I love rainy days, because I love the feeling of walking in rain.

Spring: warm, windy, dusty, sand-storm, flowers blossoming
Summer: Hot, rainy, wet (lots of rain), stormy, humid, sunny, stuffy, sweltering,
sauna-like
Fall/autumn: Cool, crisp, mild, cozy, clear/azure sky, golden season
Winter: Cold, freezing, snowy, icy, short days, long nights

What type of weather do Chinese people usually like?
I think it really varies according to age, where they live, and what they love to do with
their time. Generally most Chinese people like sunny days, though some people may
like rainy days, particularly those live in arid places.

Which is your most/least favorite season?

I love fall more than any other seasons. During fall, the temperature is neither very
hot nor very cold, just crisp. And the humidity is neither too high nor too low. In
addition, it is also a golden season, a season of harvest.

Well, I find winter is the hardest season of all. I just hate cold weather. To begin with,
it really bothers me when I am down with flu. Plus, I have to wear a lot to keep my
body warm in order not to catch a cold. It just makes me look as stupid as a bear.

Do you do different things in summer and in winter?

Of course. In summer I tend to do more outdoor activities, whereas I spend most of
my time at home in winter, surfing on internet, for example.

…, whereas …
…, but on the contrary …
…, while in the meantime …

What do you often do on sunny/rainy days?

I often do a lot of outdoor activities on sunny days, such as playing basketball, hiking
to the nearest lake and so on.

On rainy days, I would rather like to stay at home, either watching TV or taking a rest.

What is the weather like in your city?

Beijing has a typical temperate zone climate. During most time of the year, Beijing is
dry. But in summer, when the weather becomes hot, it rains a lot. And in winter, the
weather becomes very windy and it causes the temperature to drop sharply. Generally
speaking, the four seasons in Beijing have their distinct features.

Because my hometown is far from the sea, in general it is pretty dry. Winter is a bit
cold, dry and windy, and with a bit of snow. Spring is short and windy. Summer is hot
and slightly humid, and the temperature can go as high as 38 degrees Celsius. So it
can be kind of uncomfortable in the summer unless you have air conditioning. Finally
fall is probably the best season—it‘s very comfortable—not windy, and not too cold
or too hot like the other seasons.

Rain
Does it rain much in China/your hometown?

Yes and no. But generally speaking, it often rains a lot in summer while little or
sometimes no rainfall in other seasons.

This is a hard question, because the amount of rainfall varies according to different
places and different seasons. In Northern China, for example, there is less rainfall than
in the South.

应常使用 generally, more or less,

What is the rain distribution in China?

Geographically speaking, there is a rather clear contrast between the North and the
South in general that there is less rainfall in the North and inland areas than in the
South and costal areas. However, when it comes to seasons, there tend to be the most
rain in summer and least in winter.

How does rain affect people‘s lives?

Rain affects people‘s lives in many different ways. First and foremost, it greatly limits
people‘s outdoor activities. The traffic will have to slow down to avoid accidents.
People will have to stay inside not to be drenched. The other way that rain affects
people‘s lives that I know of is that rain can either cause flood or relieve drought.

What do you do on rainy days?

If it is only dribbling, I would like to take a walk in the rain. I, sometimes, just enjoy
the feeling of walking in and being wetted by the rain. But if it is a heavy rain, I‘d just
stay inside and do something like watching TV or taking a rest.
I don‘t really do much. I‘ll just stay at home, trying to find something for myself to do,
such as making a phone call or watching some TV.

Do you like rainy days? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. When it rains—I‘m talking about light rain—I‘d like to walk in the rain. It
is a very interesting and different experience from other walking. I just enjoy it
enormously.

No, I don‘t. Whenever it rains, I become a bit moody. I don‘t like that feeling. In
addition, rain also limits my outdoor activities that I will have to stay inside, which is
often boring to me. So I don‘t like rainy days.

Home
Do you currently live in a house or a flat/apartment?

I live in a flat not far from the town center.

I currently live in a 300-square-meter house in the southern suburb of the town.

Can you describe your house/flat?

Sure. The flat has 6 rooms—one living room, one kitchen, one bathroom and three
bedrooms for my parents, my brother and myself. The extra one is for the guest who
would come to stay with us.

What main items of furniture or appliances do you have in each room?

There aren‘t many things in my home. To begin with, there is plasma TV with two
surrounding speakers on each side in the living room. In front of it are a coffee table
and a set of couches arranged in a half circle. There are also, of course, a few pieces
of decorations in the corners and on the walls of the living room. In the bedrooms
there is really nothing special, but only beds. However, in my parents‘ room there is
another TV and in mine, a desktop computer, because, you see, I have to work on my
computer everyday.

Is it a typical house/flat in your city?

Yes, it is. You‘ll find tons of flats/houses like this in my city.

Not really. I don‘t think most people can afford a big house/flat like this one.

What kind of house or flat do you want to live in in the future?

Well, I would prefer a new flat in the town center. It doesn‘t have to be very big, but
definitely has to be nice and cozy.

I‘d like to have a big house with a beautiful garden in front for myself. You see, I
always wanted to live in a house, to enjoy the big space and privacy it provides. But,
of course, I also have to think in terms of my affordability before I make my final
decision.

Do you like the decoration in your home? Why or why not?

Are you kidding? From the wallpaper selection to paintings I drew by myself, from
the flowers on the table to other decorations in the corner, I made all these all by
myself. I love them.

No. I am not very satisfied with the decoration in my home, because I always feel
there is something missing. Maybe I need something to put in the corners.

Will you move to another house or flat in the near future?

Yes, definitely. The one I‘m currently living in is too old. The paint is peeling off; the
wall is not soundproof enough; and worst of all, the sewage system in the building is
just annoying—it always gets stuck, letting wastes drift everywhere in the corridor.
Just imagine how terrible the scene looks. So I must move out of there as soon as I
find a suitable one.

No. I‘m comfortable with the house I‘m living in now. It is big enough for my whole
family and still close enough to the town center, making it all convenient for
commutation to schools, offices and shops. So I‘m not going to move.

What kind of house/flat are you going to move into?
Well, I would definitely like to move into a bigger flat, one that has a separate study
room and a bigger living room for my new home theater system.

I am going to moving into a small house. Though it is not my ideal house and has
only 4 rooms, it is definitely cheaper than the flat I‘m currently living in, because it is
located in the community in the suburb. And it is safer.

What do you think of the area in which you live?

It is a great neighborhood with great environment and facilities. People are friendly;
small parks are everywhere; and there are also sports facilities free to use. I like the
place where I live.

I am not very satisfied with the area in which I live. The major reason is it is too
densely populated. There are not enough parking lots. It is always hard to get one.
When it comes to the public facilities, you won‘t have a chance to lay your hands on it,
for they are always being used by others.

How long have you lived there?

I‘ve lived there for 4 years. It‘s been a great living experience: great neighborhood,
great people, and great facilities.

I haven‘t lived there for long. But I don‘t really like the neighborhood, because people
are too aloof. For a person like me who enjoys close friendship with neighbors, it is
just nightmare.

What are your neighbors like?

Since I live in a house in a less populated suburban area, there are only a few
neighbors in the area where I live. But they are all great people, people who are
always ready to help.

There are a lot of people living in my neighborhood. Some are really great people,
while some others are just strange.

Spare time
How do you usually spend your evening and with whom?
There are many different ways I spend my evenings, from hanging out with a few
friends in a bar to asking my girlfriend out for a nice dinner, from surfing on the
internet at home to enjoying the fellowship of my family before TV. Anyway, there
are always things to do in evenings for me.

Do you like to go out in the evenings and with whom?

Well, it really doesn‘t matter to me. If I‘m in the mood of going out, I‘ll go out,
sometimes alone, sometimes with friends. But if I‘m not in the mood of going out, I‘ll
just stay home. Maybe I‘ll go to bed early.

What do people today usually like to do after work?

It really depends on individual preference. Most people go straight back home after
work to enjoy family in China. But there are always exceptionals. I know a few
people who are afraid of going back home after work. (Whisper) You know why?
Their wives are very ill-tempered. They are afraid of them.

What do you like to do after work?

Well, though from time to time I do different things after work from hanging out with
a few friends in a bar to having a nice dinner somewhere. In most of the cases, I
would just like to go straight back home after work to enjoy the fellowship of my
family.

What do you do in your spare time? How do you arrange your spare time?

As a matter of fact, I have very little spare time these days. My studies are so
important to me that I have given up all my other activities. For example, I used to
love playing tennis, but these days I simply do not have the time. In addition, I used to
swim often, as I believe it kept me fit without the danger of being injured.

Well, these days, I surf on the Internet in my spare time. I have just bought my first
computer, and love to look for exciting web sites that I have not known before. It is of
course very time-consuming, so I don‘t really have time for anything else. I have to
mention that it is an educational activity. For example, by means of web cams (video
images from cameras set up at certain places) I am able to watch what wild animals
are doing in many parts of the world. I particularly like to watch the polar bears
playing with their cubs.

What do Chinese people do in their spare time?

It really varies according to people‘s age, gender and many other factors. However,
generally speaking people in China like to hang out with friends or do some outdoor
activities in their spare time.

Do you think spare time is important to you?

Yes, it definitely is. I just can‘t imagine a life without any spare time. Anyway,
everyone‘s life needs a little bit of seasoning and switch-off from the daily routines.

Do you feel lonely if you stay at home for a long time?

I guess so. I am very much a social being. I need to talk to people, spend time with
people. I just can‘t stand being alone for a long time.

Actually, I enjoy spending being alone during the week—I am lone ranger. But on the
weekends, I‘m eager to reconnect with others and to share joyful and fun times
together.

Hobbies and Interests
What are you hobbies?

I don‘t have many hobbies but one—watching films at home.

My hobby is stamp collecting. I have been collecting stamps for the past two years
now. That is to say, for two years I have chosen stamp collecting to be my only hobby.
I regularly spend time working on my collection. I guess I spend about two hours
every week on my hobby. This is mainly over weekends, as I do not have time during
the week.

collecting things (stamps, postcards, coins, etc.), outdoor activities (hiking, horse
riding, etc.), creative hobbies (photography, painting, etc.) and games (Mah Johng,
Chinese chess, etc.)

Did you have other hobbies/interests when you were younger?

Yes. I loved to collect candy wrappers when I was a small girl. You know, kids
always love candies. Well, I not only loved candies, but also was fascinated by the
beautiful and sometimes fancy wrapping papers they had. And I still have some of
them kept in my books.
Well, I used to go horse riding when I was young. And I even had a little pony for
myself. But I gave it up later on after I once fell off from the horse back and hurt my
shoulder. It is too dangerous.

If you had more free time, what would you do?

If I had more free time, I would like to write a book about my travel experiences. I
would only include short, funny stories from my travels, particularly those which
show how differences in culture and language can cause hilarious situations. It would
probably take a long time to write, but in the end I might make some money from the
book.

Relax
How do you relax?

There are many different ways I can use to relax myself, from listening to some music
to sitting in front of the TV and watching some comedies, from going out to take a
walk in the park to just lying in bed. Anyway, whenever it is, wherever I am, I can
always find a way to relax.

I find listening to music is a very good way to relax. I mean easy –listening music. It
really helps to ease up the tension in mind.

How do Chinese people relax? How do people around you relax?

I think it really varies according to people‘s age, gender and individual preferences.
But people around me like to go to a bar to relax. They say that ―What you have to do
is just to down a beer. Then you‘ll forget about all of your worries.‖

I find walking in a park a common way for Chinese people to relax. It is probably
because people just need to get away from the noisy and busy city life for some time
and get back to the nature.

How do Chinese young people differ from the old in their ways of relaxing?

Because the young and the old are apparently different in age and life style, their ways
to relax also differ accordingly. While young people like to go on something fast and
exciting, like physical-contact sport or riding on roller-coaster, the old prefer
something easy and slow, like walking in a park or playing golf.

…, whereas…
…, while…
on the one hand…, on the other hand …等等。

Music
Do you like music? What type of music do you like?

Well, I am not really into music. But sometimes I do like listening to religious music,
I mean, Christian music. Christian music is always about singing praises to God and
reminding people of their responsibility to live a pure and holy life. It is music that
purifies life. It helps me a lot. Whenever I‘m listening, I feel like being lifted up to
heaven and drawn close to God. It gives peace to my mind and joy to my soul.

可以突破传统思维(think out of the box),谈一些其他的类别,如宗教音乐

Have you learned to play any musical instrument?

Yes, I can play guitar, not very well though. I started learning guitar two years ago.
The primary initiative was to entertain my girlfriend, though she left me for another
person soon after I started. It‘s heart-breaking, but I didn‘t stop, because I needed
something to hang on to, a goal. I‘m happy now and I‘ll keep on playing my guitar,
whoever I may play to.

I‘m afraid, no, though I always wanted to learn to play one, because I always thought
it is cool to be able to play a musical instrument, whatever it maybe: guitar, piano, or
even drums.

I can play Gu Zheng
(古筝), a traditional string instrument (弦乐) in China. 管乐(wind
instrument),打击乐(percussion instrument)

What kind of music is popular now in China?

There is not just one particular kind of music popular in China. Actually there are
many: pop, rock, jazz, folk, country, classical, rap and many others. All of them are
popular among different groups. For instance, a lot of young people are really into
rock and rap music now, while still a lot of older folks like to listen to pop, jazz and
country.
How does music affect people‘s lives?

Music affect people‘s lives in many different ways just as there are many different
kinds of music. But first and foremost, listening to music helps people to relax.
Furthermore, music production and sale generate a lot of wealth for people. Third,
music is an art; it is an expression. It is not only an outlet but also a book that records
stories, feelings and hopes.

What kind of music do young people like? What kind of do old people like?

As far as I know, a lot of young people are really into rock and rap music today. They
are so fond of the heavy beats of drums and the unique sound effects made by
electrical guitars and bass. On the other hand, easy-listening music is still the greatest
passion for the old people. Its slow-moving rhythm and tender sounds suit their age
and life-style very well.

I‘m really into…
I‘m greatly fascinated by/with…
I‘m crazy about…
…is my greatest passion in life
I‘m extremely fond of…等等

Sports
What sports do you like? What is your favorite sport?

Though I play many different sports, my best love is, however, basketball. I‘ve been
playing it regularly for three years since I came to college. And I‘m just crazy about it.

I‘m not really a sports type of person. So I rarely play sports except for some less
competitive, less challenging games, such as fishing.

If board games are considered sports, my favorite sport would be chess and link-five,
because, you see, I‘m not a sports type of person that I can only play some games that
are not physically challenging.

Why do you like it so much?

Basketball is one of the most challenging physical-contact sports. What‘s more,
unlike other sports—swimming, tennis or horse-riding—it is a team sport that unites
five people involved and develops cooperative skills. In addition to this, I love
basketball also because of NBA games. Watching them makes me more interested in
this sport as well.

As I‘ve said, I‘m not a person built for physically challenging games. So this is the
only game that I can play, less challenging, yet still entertaining.

Are there any sport facilities near your home?

Yes, there is a college near my home, where you can find all kinds of sports facilities,
basketball court, tennis court, soccer field, swimming pool. You name it.

I‘m afraid to disappoint you, but no. Sadly there aren‘t any sports facilities near my
home. But I‘d really hope the public sports and health sector of the municipal
government build some facilities in the neighborhood, at least some ping-pong tables.

How do sports affect people‘s lives?

Sports affect people‘s lives in two major ways. First, as an exercise it builds up one‘s
both one‘s physical and mental strength. Second, as an entertainment it gives people a
lot of fun. Nonetheless, there are still many others ways sports affect people‘s lives.

Daily Life/Routine
When do you usually get up/go to bed?

During weekdays, I get up early at 7:00am, because I usually have to be in my
office/class by 9:00am, and go to bed at around 11:00pm. But during weekends, I‘d
rather give myself a break from the busy weekday routines. So I would get up after
10:00am; then I‘ll enjoy my weekend and I seldom hit my bed before 12 midnight.

Are you weekday and weekend routines different?

Of course,I work 30 hours a week from Monday to Friday. In comparison, I don‘t
have to work on the weekends. I can just take these two days off for rest.

Yes, I always have a busy schedule on weekdays: go to work at 8:00am, come back at
7:00pm. In between these two times, I don‘t belong to myself, because I have to keep
working and working for my boss. But weekends are different. It is when I can be in
control of my own life, when I can choose to do whatever I want.

What would you like to change about your weekday/workday routine?
I would really like to get off work early. You see, each day my work doesn‘t end until
8:00pm, which is already very late. However, the boss asks me to work overtime from
time to time. When I get home, it is usually after 9:00pm. I‘m just so sick of being
home late. Plus, I don‘t want to hear my wife complaining about it any more.

What is your favorite part of the day?

My favorite part of the day is evening. I like it primarily because it is a time for fun, a
time for relaxation. Second, I like it also because it is also a quiet time that I can sit at
my desk and concentrate on my unfinished office work or study.

What is the worst part of the day?

The worst part of the day, I believe, is when you are waken up by the alarm clock in
the early morning and have to force yourself to climb out of bed. Then you get
yourself quickly washed up and dressed, dashing to the nearest subway station, and
squeeze yourself into the train. It is definitely the worst experience in a day.

What part of the day do you work with the most efficiency?

I believe I work with the most efficiency only at night, when everything is quiet that I
can totally concentrate on the work or study I need to do.

Bird
Do you like birds?

Yes, I do, I especially enjoy it when birds happily sing in the morning.

No, I don‘t, which is mainly because their uncontrollable bladder problem (hahaha…).

Describe a kind of bird that appears near your home.
There are some sparrows nesting near my house. Each morning I can hear these
lovely creatures happily singing their songs in the tree nearby. It is just wonderful.

What are the popular birds in China?

I‘m not sure which is the most popular, but there are many popular birds: magpie,
jaybird, crane, parrot, swallow and many others.

What special meanings do they have?

Generally different birds have different meanings. Magpie, for example, is seen as a
herald for prosperity and good luck, while raven is often viewed as an omen of
calamity.

Well, I don‘t really know about birds much. But one friend of mine loves birds very
much; he is a bird-maniac. I remember he once told me that currently the most
popular bird in China is the King bird. I‘ve never seen it and I don‘t know whether it
is called King bird, but he said people keep this kind of bird because they believe it
can bring them good fortune and prosperity.

How should we protect birds?

There are many ways to protect birds, from introducing wild animal protection laws to
its enforcement, from educating people about the benefits birds bring us to protecting
their habitat. Anyway, it is not a small project, but must call for collaborative efforts
from individuals, groups, organizations and governments.

Flower
Do you like flowers?

Yes, I do. Flowers are among the most beautiful things in the world.

No, not really. Though I admit flowers are among the most beautiful things in the
world, I don‘t have particular affection for flowers.
Not really. I don‘t know exactly why. But it is just a feeling. It is something that runs
in the blood of my family. My father doesn‘t like flowers; neither does my mother,
nor does my sister.

What are the most popular flowers in China?

There are many different kinds of popular flowers in China: Rose, peony, carnation,
tulip, daisy, chrysanthemum, and many others. Among them, rose is my favorite,
because it represents love. And love, I believe, is the most important thing one should
never lose in life.

On what occasions do Chinese people send flowers to others?

There are a few occasions when people send flowers to others. On valentines‘ day,
boys buy roses for their loved girls. And on mother‘s day, children give carnation to
their mothers. And when people drop by to a friend‘s house, flowers become a sign of
good wishes.

What special meanings do flowers have?

Different flowers have different meanings. Rose represents love; carnation expresses
gratitude to mother; chrysanthemum means friendship. I admit I don‘t know them all,
but you can always look it up in a flower guidance book or on the internet.

Dance
Do Chinese people like to dance?

Well, yes and no. I am sure there are a lot of people who like to dance, while in the
same time a lot others don‘t. You see, Chinese are such a large population group, so it
is really impossible to generalize.

What types of dance are they usually interested in?
For those who do like to dance, there are several major types of dances that are
popular now: ballroom dance (like waltz, tango, and so on), cultural or traditional folk
dance (such as Yangge), street dance (hip-hop) and some others.

What are the differences between the dances the old people like and the dances the
young people like?

Their differences of interests mainly come from their difference in age and life-style.
Young people are full of energy and always embrace fast-pace life and enjoy dances
like hip-hop merely for fun, while on the other hand the old people prefer slower-
moving dances, mainly ballroom dances, either for physical exercise or social
purposes.

Is dancing important to Chinese people?

This is really a hard question to answer. As I don‘t know much about dance myself
and it is such a large population group. I really don‘t have an answer to this question.

Shopping
Do you like shopping/window shopping?

Yes, I love shopping. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I usually buy clothes for
myself. I like to go to the shops and see what they have to offer. I browse around and
compare the prices before I buy something. Secondly, I do the shopping for all our
household needs. I love to find out about any new products on the market and how
they can possibly make my life easier.

No, I hate shopping. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I do understand shopping is
the most basic activity in a capitalistic society. But people are often lured into buying
things they don‘t really need. Some people even shop till they drop. I don‘t like that.
Secondly, I believe shopping is a woman thing. Women are crazy about shopping,
while, on the other hand, a man is not supposed to be fond of shopping.

Where do you often go to shop and with whom?
I usually go to Xidan with my friends. There are many shopping malls and street
shops with lots of very fashionable clothes and accessories. Plus, there are always
sales going on and you can bargain over items you want to buy.

How often do you go shopping in a week?

I‘m not really sure. Sometimes twice a week, while some other times once in two
weeks.

I‘m a compulsive shopaholic that I have to shop for at least two times a week.
However due to my recent tight budget, I‘ll have to try to reduce it at least once a
week.

ends meet),如果经济状况捉肘见襟(in a bad financial situation, having a tight
如流水(spending money like water)。

Do you usually do your shopping at one place or usually different places?

My friends and I like to ―dig‖ for goodies in small street shops, which often spread
out throughout the town. So we have to move from one shop to another to explore for
good buys.

I‘m not particularly fond of shopping. But if I do have to shop for something, be it for
friends or for myself, I would always like to go to Carrefour, where I can always find
almost all sorts of things.

goodies”。

What kinds of shops are there near your home?

I‘m afraid to tell you that I live in a pure residential area. So there aren‘t any shops
nearby.

Well, there are just a few shops in the neighborhood. Most of them are grocery shops,
while there is one barber shop too. But if you would like to go to a bigger shop, you‘ll
have to go to the town, which usually takes 20 minutes or so by bus.

Do you pay more attention to price or quality?
It really depends. When it comes to big, expensive and durable things, for instance
electrical appliances, furniture, etc., I‘m more interested in quality than in price. Since
these items are usually already expensive and are expected to last for a long time, a
slight difference in price wouldn‘t matter too much. However, when it comes to small,
relatively cheap and non-durable stuffs, I would usually like to bargain for a lower
price.

This
car is a very good buy.

Letter
Do you often write letters?

You bet. Besides telephone, it is my second primary way for communication.

Is ice cold? Does bird fly?
Not really. I doubt it 等来替代 no),可以再作简单的延伸。

Whom do you often write to and what do you often write about?

I often write to many different people ranging from friends to relatives, from business
partners to clients, and write about a variety of things from complaining about how
distressed I‘ve been recently to telling a story about a girl I met in the bar, or from
personal matters to corporate businesses.

使用“from… to…, from… to…”

Do you prefer to write letters or emails?

I prefer emails to letters in two ways: first, emails are less formal that I don‘t have to
pay much attention to my writing style; second, emails are much faster and can be
sent at a finger tip. However, when it does come to some formal documents, legal
documents or confidential papers for example, one has to call upon the more reliable
and legally binding postal system.

News and Media
How do you get the latest news?

Personally, I would like to resort to the internet to get the latest news, because it is
always fast and easy to find the piece of news you are looking for thanks to the search
engines.
I read newspaper to get the latest news. It is the most reliable source and provides lots
of details and commentaries. On the other hand, I‘m a conservative type of person. I‘d
just like to stick to the old ways. Technology and internet are not my thing.

convenient),要么是可靠(reliable),要么是全面(includes a lot of details and
covers all aspects of life)。

What kinds of news are usually reported on TV in your country?

There are many kinds of news being reported on TV today: political news, financial
news, sports news, international news and even news about local happenings.

What non-news items can be found in newspaper in your country?

Generally speaking advertisement is the most common non-news item found in
newspaper in China. However, there are also some columns dedicated to non-news
items, such as jokes, stories, word puzzles and so on—mainly entertainment stuffs.

horoscope。

Do you pay more attention to local, national or international news?

I tend to pay more attention to international news, because there are always more
interesting things being reported in international news. Furthermore, I‘d always be
happy to learn about foreign culture.

的事(things happened or happening around you),通常比较有用,有实用价值
(practical and useful)。
informative。

Which do you prefer, TV or radio?

I prefer TV to radio, because, number one, TV provides more information than radio
in terms of image and sound; number two, I am more a visual driven person that I
learn faster by visual input rather than audio.

的 one picture is more than thousands of words。

Film
Do you like to watch films?
You bet. And I just watched a film yesterday called iRobot starred by Will Smith.

What kind of film do you like to watch? What is your favorite kind of film?

I like comedies. First of all, comedies are great fun. What I mean to say is that I have
a good laugh while watching. Secondly, comedies seldom contain violent scenes. For
instance, you would not easily find murders, shooting, fighting, and so on in a comedy.
Lastly, comedies often contain excellent acting by famous stars. For example, Robbie
Williams in ‗Mrs. Doubtfire‘ is considered one of the most extraordinary
performances ever by an actor.

What kinds of films are popular in your country?

There are many popular kinds of films today in China: comedy, action, war, horror,
sci-fi, romance and others. I believe comedy is among the most popular films and
accepted by the general audience, while action films, Sci-Fi‘s and Romance are most
popular among the young people.

according to their age and gender),不过考生列举一二就可以了。

Who is your favorite movie star? Describe him / her.

My favorite movie star is Jackie Cheng. He is handsome, and very funny. He always
has a smile on his face, and never seems to be worried about the situations that he
finds himself in. Even the former U.S. President Clinton likes to watch his movies.

Do you like to watch a film in cinema or at home?

I prefer to watch at home. I have a home-theater system in my house plus a wide-
screen plasma TV, so in terms of visual and sound effects it isn‘t really much different
from watching in a cinema. In addition to this, watching at home I can control the film
playback myself. I can rewind, fast-forward or pause the film whenever I want. It is
such a freedom that you can‘t enjoy if you go to a cinema. And best of all, I can invite
friends to join me without having to pay for their tickets.

I‘d like to watch in a cinema, because watching film is not my sole purpose in cinema;
it is a great place to have my date. Imagine. When the lights go out and the film starts
to play, you put your arms around her and hold her to your shoulder. It is the just most
romantic moment of them all.

Holiday
Do you like holidays and why?

Are you kidding? Of course I do. It is a great time to take a break from the heavy
daily study/work. I can use the holiday time to go on a trip somewhere or maybe just
take a rest at home.

做 holiday lovers,他们去山涧中徒步(hiking to lakes and mountains),去沙滩边度
假(sunbathing at the beach),或者是去挑战自己的极限(challenging one‘s limits)。

Where do you usually go for holiday?

I‘m not really sure. You see, each time I go to a different place for holiday. Last time,
I went to Tai Mountain and this time I am going to Tibet.

What do you like to do on holiday?

I like to go on a trip somewhere. It helps me to relax and in the meantime enriches my
experience.

I would like to go back to my hometown to see my parents and spend some time with
them, because I‘ve been working in Beijing for 3 years; during the last 3 years, I
hardly had any time to go back home, except for holidays.

holiday。

If you could go to any foreign country for holiday, where would you go?

I would most like to go to the States. It is a country full of places to go and things to
see. It has given me lots of imaginations—lady liberty, the Broadway, Hollywood,
Yellowstone National Park, and the Grand Canyon. It is a must-visit country in a
lifetime.
Restaurant
How often do you go to restaurant? How often do you eat out?

I am not really sure. Sometimes I eat out seven days in a row, while some other times
I never step into a restaurant for a whole month.

I eat out with my friends after work regularly, often twice a week. And we think it is a
good way for friendship building and relaxation.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is Jiaozi, a round dumpling with fillings of meat, vegetable and egg
that is either boiled, steamed or fried and eaten with vinegar and hot chili sauce.

Do Chinese people often go to restaurant?

I would say ―yes‖. Actually food has become an inseparable part of Chinese culture.
People always go to different restaurants, talk about food and talk about food culture.

Bike
Do you often ride bikes?

Yes, I do. I reckon it as a very good physical exercise that not only builds up my body
but also a spirit of perseverance.

Why so many people ride bikes in China?

Yes. China is once called ―the Kingdom of Bicycles‖. I guess the main reason why
many people ride bicycles in China is that bicycles are cheap while cars are extremely
expensive—each family can easily afford to buy at least one bicycle, whereas only a
small percentage of families can afford to buy cars.

What differences between the views of the old and the young toward bikes?

For the old, bicycles are just transportation tools; they rarely care about the color,
design or any accessories. Contrastingly for the young, they are often fussy about
these things, for they think bicycles are more than just transportation tools—they are
also an expression of who they are.
(the old are more practical)。

Language
What is your favorite language and why?

As sure as the sun rises from the east, my favorite language in the world is Chinese. It
is delicate, expressive and, most importantly, many of the earliest or most influential
literature and philosophy masterpieces are written in this language. After all, it is also
my mother tongue.

How long have you been learning English?

I have been studying English for six months now. My parents enrolled me into a
private school that specializes in English. The school has a good reputation in the city,
and has employed a number of foreign teachers on their staff.

What do you think is the most difficult part in learning a language?

I find speaking the most difficult. Allow me to explain. Firstly, I am able to read and
write English well. I suppose it is because one has the opportunity to think what you
are doing. When speaking however, one has no time to think. In addition, when you
speak you have to concentrate on your pronunciation. For example, when you are
writing you only have to watch your spelling and grammar, but when you speak you
have to apply everything you know about the language.

own difficulties in learning a language)。

What aspect of English do you find the least difficult?

I find that I can write English quite well. For example, I have built up a good
vocabulary over the past few months and am able to construct good sentences. This is
because I have studied the meaning of all the unfamiliar words that I have come
across. In addition, I am constantly expanding my vocabulary by reading English
books and newspapers, and watching programs that are in English on the TV.

What do you think is the best way to study English?

I don‘t know. I mean, I‘ve tried many different ways. I suppose the best way is to use
it regularly, just like what the conventional wisdom says ―use it or lose it‖.

语言就是工具,不磨不快,正所谓“用进废退”(use it or lose it),“熟能生
(practice makes perfect)
Do you think learning a second foreign language is important? Why and why not?

Yes, I do think it is important. From the career perspective, in the society that heavily
relies on communication today, one who can speak two foreign languages stands a
much better chance in the competition for a job position than those with only one or
none foreign language.

No, I don‘t think learning a second foreign language is necessary, but a waste money,
energy and time. To begin with,

Noise
Is it noisy around the area where you live?

Yes. I live in a very noisy neighborhood. Right next to where I live is a busy shopping
street. There are tens of thousands people coming to shop here each day and thus
making it a very noisy place.

Yes and no. The noise level in my neighborhood is quite moderate. Throughout the
years living here, I think I‘ve learned to live with it. So I don‘t think it affects much.
I‘m ok with it.

No. I live in a very quiet neighborhood. There are not any business or industrial
activities around. People here live in harmony and peace. In addition, the environment
is good. I love my neighborhood.

from the different perspectives/angles)。

What do you think can be done to control the noise?

There are three major ways to control the noise and reduce its harm to human body to
the minimum. To begin with, the noise-control methods can be utilized at the source,
like covering it up. Second, methods like erecting soundproof walls can also be
applied on the transmission medium between the noise source and human ears. And
last, human ears can when necessary must be protected at the reception point from the
harassment of noise by wearing earplugs or earmuffs.

How does noise affect people‘s life and work?

First of all, noise affects people‘s life and work by distracting people‘s attention.
Sometimes it can also cause irritation or headache. And in some severe cases, it can
even cause physical damage to the human ear or even cause death.

Boat
Have you ever ridden in a boat?
Yes, many times. You see, I come from Chongqing, which is divided by the Yangtze
River into two parts. To get from one side to the other, the fastest ways are either
riding in the cross-river cable car or taking a ferry boat. Though I prefer the cable car,
I‘ve also taken the ferry boat for many times.

No. But I‘d really like to. It must be fun to be actually on water, tossed back and forth
by currents. I really look forward to riding in a boat one day.

Does boat have any significant meaning in the history of China?

Yes, of course. China is one of the first countries to discover the secrets of boat-
building and navigation. Furthermore, boat has always been linked with many
important historical events. There are also a great number of mythological stories
about boats. Now having passed through the history, boat has become a symbol for
good luck and prosperity, which is best reflected in the Chinese language. Phrases like
―Bon Voyage‖ and ―Best Wishes‖ all carry the Chinese word for boat.

Future Plan
What job would you like to have in the future?

Twenty years from now I would like to become a CEO in one of the top 500
companies in the world. Then I would lead my people to become more proficient,
productive and to create more life-value for themselves.

I would like to have my own company in the future. Then I would work with my
people not as a boss, but as a leader who can lead them, motivate them, train them and
help them to achieve greater self-worth.

What do you plan to major in?

I plan to study Business, hopefully in one of the best business schools, because I am
really serious about pursuing a life-time career in the business world.

I would like to major in Mass Media and Communication, because I am really
interested in this field and I think it is something that I can really excel in.

one‘s career path)。

What do you plan to do after graduation from university?
I plan to return to China and start to develop my career, or if I have further
opportunities, I would like to go on a higher level of study. But who knows, I might
have a totally different plan by the time I graduate. Life is always full of changes and
variables.

I have not really planned it out yet. Look, I am not the kind of person who likes to
plan much and gets myself bound to something, but rather likes to ply by ear.

ear)。

Transport
Which kind of transport do you usually use?

I use bicycle. It‘s fast and cheap, and I can always trust it to take me to wherever I
want to go. And best of all, I don‘t need to worry about the traffic jams.

I take subway train everyday to commute back and forth between home and office.
But if I‘m going to some other places that are not next to the subway lines, I would
often take a bus or, in some emergent situations, taxi.

What is the public transport like in your city?

In Beijing, public transportation is available in all forms: bus, train and taxi. Now that
Beijing is preparing for its 2008 Olympic Games, a few new subway lines are being
built and the bus route system has been improved a great deal as well.

In my city, there is no really public transportation and people get around mainly by
bicycles or on foot.

needs)。
交通阻塞就像家常便饭一样(traffic jams have almost become part of people‘s
lives: they are always there)。

When are these forms of transport most crowded?

Generally speaking, there are two ―rush hours‖ each day, one in the morning between
7-9 when everyone goes to work, the other in the evening between 5-8 when most
people goes home from their work.

情况(like a sardine can)或者路面上堵车时的着急(it seems to take forever to
get the office)。
Animals
Do you like animals?

Yes, particularly dogs. They are such close and faithful friends of humans. I really
wish I could have one.

It is really a hard question to answer since there are so many different kinds of
animals out there. It‘ll be very unfair to generalize and say I like or I don‘t like
animals, because there are definitely some animals that are cute and lovely while
some others, not so lovely.

Do you like going to the zoo?

Bien sur. I like it very much. There is a big zoo in the city where I live, and it is just
within talking distance from my home. You can find a whole variety of animals there.
And for people who live in the city and don‘t have time for wild land travel, going to
the zoo is a convenient way to get close to nature.

What pet is most popular in your country?

I guess dogs are the most popular pet in China. On the one had, dogs are in people‘s
eyes a symbol of honesty and faithfulness. On the other, people in China have a long
history training them as watchdogs. But today, people keep them mostly as pets.

Do any people close to you keep pets?

My neighbor has a small dog. Her dog is so cute and lovely. She keeps it in her
apartment and takes it out for a walk each morning and evening. Everyone likes it and
calls it ―Harley‖.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I have a small dog which is quite attached to me. It was given to me by a friend
of mine about two years ago. It is black all over except for some white dots behind its
neck.
No, I don‘t. Although I like small animals, I am afraid I don‘t have enough time and
energy to keep a pet at home.

Have you ever kept a pet?

I had a small bunny rabbit before. It was given to me as a birthday gift. This little
grey-haired creature always liked to run after me in the house. I also liked it
enormously. However it died in accident and that really saddened me for some time.

No, but I really would like to keep one for myself, a dog, a cat or maybe a bird.

Keeping Fit
Do you try to keep fit?

I am very conscious about my physically health, so I always try to keep my body fit
by doing all kinds of exercises.

fit,都要 build up their body。

Is keeping fit popular in China?

Keeping fit seems to be a trend these days. I also believe that Chinese people have
always had a strong belief in the wholeness of mind, body and spirit, and keeping
their ―yin‖ and ―yang‖ in balance, which can date back to thousands of years ago.

The answer may be ―no‖ ten years ago, but today it is definitely ―yes‖. I‘ve seen both
young and old going to fitness centers or parks to regularly exercise their body,
because Chinese people are increasingly more conscious to lead a healthy style of life.

across the nation)。

Is keeping fit more important for men or women?

It is really unfair to generalize and say it is more important for one than the other,
because most people want to keep fit. Only the ones who are better at self-discipline
and maintaining good habits are able to achieve their goals.

概全(we shouldn‘t generalize),应该具体问题具体分析(to draw conclusions
according to different situations)。
How do Chinese people usually exercise?

There is a whole variety of different ways, for example jogging, swimming, taiji, etc.
It is really hard to say which one is generally the most popular.

These days I see more and more people going to fitness centers and do their exercises
under the guidance of coach. I think this is really great that one can train and build up
his/her body to the highest efficiency.

Photographs/Memories
Do you like photography and why?

I enjoy taking pictures on my trips and bring them back as souvenirs.

I like photography as an art. It not only records beautiful scenes or things, but also
speaks a language that deeply impresses human soul.

When did you start to like photography?

I began taking photographs when I got my first camera at the age of 16. Then I would
take small trips to different places during my holidays and record the beautiful
sceneries I see. Ever since then, I have developed my passion for photography.

Do you keep your old photos?

You bet I do. I keep old photos to remember the good old days, old friends, old house
and things of the like.

Not really. I don‘t think I need photos to remind me of the good old days, old friends
or old things of the like. Plus, I don‘t have enough room for photo albums on my shelf
anymore.

Do you like to take pictures as souvenirs or buy souvenirs?

I do prefer taking pictures as souvenirs than buying souvenirs from stores, because it
is a better way to remind you of your travel experiences, and pictures can be easily
copied and organized; best of all, they don‘t take much space.

I prefer buying souvenirs to taking pictures. There are many reasons: number one,
souvenirs are something one can touch, see, and even smell at. I can put them on
shelves, in corners or hang them on the wall as decorations to light up the room.
Number two,

Wedding
What is a typical Chinese wedding like?

A typical Chinese wedding is always held on specially selected day according to the
old Chinese Lunar Calendar, the blessed day. Unlike westerners, generally Chinese
people don‘t get married in a church, but the ceremony tends to be held in a big
restaurant or a dinning hall. Right after the couple is pronounced husband and wife,
guests will be ushered into seats to have dinner, when the newly-wed would come to
each table to ask people to drink.

主要的场景就可以了,如夫妻交拜,闹洞房(teasing the couple in their bedroom
and helping them to get used to being husband and wife)等。

What people are usually involved?

First, the extended family is directly involved. Everyone will try to help in this whole
thing to bless the new couple. Second, the close friend circle of the family will also
get involved.

What clothes do people usually wear?

For the newly-wed, they must be very properly dressed, bride in traditional or western
style wedding dress, groom in a full suit. And as to other people, there is no strict
dressing code as long as they dress not too casual, like slippers or pajamas (humor).

What happens during the wedding?

In the beginning, all relatives and friends gather in the main hall to wait for the bride
and groom to come. Finally they will arrive in a limo or a really nice car. Then out
they come and process to the solemn yet cheerful wedding melody until they come to
the very end of the hall before the main table and seats where the bride and groom‘s
parents are seated. There they will be blessed by their parents and pronounced legal
husband and wife. Then everyone will go to their seat and the wedding feast starts.

Are weddings important in China?

Does bird fly? Wedding is one of the biggest thing is one‘s life. And generally
speaking, each one intends their wedding to be the one and only time in their lifetime.
And just because of this, it has to be important; it has to be a big, festive and glorious
celebration.

Time/Watch
Do you wear a watch?

Yes, I do. It is a Rado. (Whisper) Not a real one though. I bought it from a street
vendor. It costs only 200 bucks.

No, I don‘t. Wearing watch makes my wrist very uncomfortable. And taking it off and
putting it back on before and after washing hands are just troublesome for me.

Do you think it is important to be on time?

I think it is extremely important to be on time, because to be on time is one way to
honor someone else and let them know that their time matters.

通知对方(inform the other person whom you are meeting with)。

How do you feel when you are late for an appointment?

Of course I do feel sorry; because I really don‘t want to keep others waiting. I must
apologize and try not to be late again.

How do you feel when others are late?

When others come late for appointment, of course I won‘t feel very good, but I‘ll try
to be understanding. I‘ll give them opportunities to explain and try to make sure that
they don‘t feel too bad for being late.

Clothing
What kind of clothes do you like?

Well, I‘m a kind of simple person. So I don‘t really have clothes that I particularly
like. But if I have to give an answer, I would say casual shirts and jeans.

My favorite kind of clothing is very shiny, dark clothing. I like wearing very
interesting designer clothing and I like wearing clothes that are suitable for nightclubs.

How do you get information about fashion?
I‘m not really into fashion. But there are various sources to get fashion information
from, such as magazine, TV, and internet.

What are the differences between the clothes at the present and ten years ago?

China has experienced great changes in the last decade. The living condition has
greatly improved, so has greatly increased the variety of clothes. Today people are
wearing all kinds of clothes.

How do older people feel about younger people‘s clothing?

I think most of them don‘t really like the clothes young people wear today. They think
they are too revealing or just too flashy. Apparently it is because the girls are dressing
too boldly these days.

What kind of clothes do children usually wear?

Most of them have to wear school uniforms while at school. When they get home,
they change into all kinds of clothes. It‘s hard to say what particular piece of clothes
they like. Every child is different.

What are the most fashionable clothes in China now?

I‘m not really into fashion. But I guess Korean fashion have become very popular in
the recent years thanks to the growing popularity of Korean dramas.
