Pope High School Horticulture Program
Promotes Healthier Future
The Farm to School curriculum focuses on introducing stu-
dents to improved nutrition, awareness of where foods come
from and how communities can partner to improve all stakehold-
ers’ quality of life. Mr. Green’s plan of action to implement the
Farm to School program includes introducing organic gardening,
initiating a weekly lesson where students prepare fresh local
foods for class, educating students on healthy eating habits, and
showing films like Store Wars; Food, Inc.; and Supersize It to
emphasize culture’s approach to food. Students trace the origin
of specific fresh foods from the farm to the grocery store, and
use a seed catalog to purchase all the components needed to
develop a seasonal garden.
In December, the greenhouse, curriculum, and gardens were
on display as several officials from the Georgia Department of
Education toured the Farm to School program. Culinary arts
teacher Tracy Merriman had her students use Pope-grown fresh
garden products to create a wonderful feast.

Life after Crème. ®
Most preschools talk on and on about the importance of brain development in
the earliest years of life. And they’re right. But only Crème de la Crème® is
designed inside and out to optimize your child’s potential and deliver a
significant advantage in the years ahead.
This is simply no ordinary preschool.
We’ve taken the best of the best in early childhood philosophies and unbridled
their true potential! With a spectacular, educationally-engineered facility. And
a stimulating curriculum that steps up learning in a variety of enrichment rooms
throughout the day.
We start with the basics – math, science, social studies and language. Then
we rotate your child through enriched learning classrooms with teachers who
specialize in music, art, computers, creative movement and second language.
The result is a fun-filled learning experience that fully engages your child
across intellectual, emotional, physical and social levels of development.

Cobb area only.
way to answer that question. Let me explain:
Pre-made reading glasses have some limitations. First of all they have the
same lens power for the right and left eyes. This works for some, but many
people have significant differences right vs. left and need a more custom
made pair of glasses. Another limitation is that the drugstore glasses have
no way to correct astigmatism- which is a common focusing error in many
people. A third limitation is that the pre-made glasses have their optical
centers set at an average for the population, not for the individual. In the
stronger lens powers, this discrepancy can cause fatigue and discomfort.
The bottom line is that an eye exam is the only way to know for sure.
Even if drugstore glasses will work fine for you, there is danger in not
getting an annual eye exam from having a false sense of security. There are
many health checks preformed during your annual eye exam including a
glaucoma test. The risk of undetected glaucoma is real and if detected early
can be successfully treated. Have your eyes checked annually to be sure
they are healthy and find out if “drugstore readers” can work for you.

Many Americans wonder how they can really help the
people of Haiti. Marietta students found a way. Led by the
fifth grade Kids Care Club, Sope Creek Elementary students
raised money to help an adopted school in Haiti get access
to clean, running water. The students chose the organiza-
tion after the earthquake in Haiti in January. Sope Creek was
matched with a partner school in Haiti called Dumarsais
estime de Port au Ceil.
The students nicknamed the project Operation Water
Well. The members of the fifth grade service club led their fel-
low students to a greater understanding of the issues in Haiti.
They began with a presentation to the faculty, made posters
about water facts for every bathroom and water fountain, and
made announcements on the school’s closed circuit television
channel. The students provided jugs of water so that teachers
and students could experience carrying water jugs a long dis-
tance, just as students in Haiti do.
Over a period of three days, the Kids Care Club raised
an astounding $5,452.28 for the project. Afterwards, the
students wrote pen pal letters to their new friends. “We are
surprised and happy about the amount of money we raised,
and we are glad that it is helping students like ourselves,”
said fifth grader Molly Jennings.

Spring is a time for transition; the
landscape has shed the old and is now
transitioning to the exciting new growth.
It brings beauty to our eyes; great smells,
touches, and sounds to our senses; and
an abundance of new crops to nurture our
bodies.
s Pete Allen So it is the same with your business
and life. Spring gives us the feeling that
it is time to clean out the old and make room for the new.
Doesn’t it feel good when you do this? The business part of
your life might also need some attention now. You just might
need to clean out the place where you pay your bills. Or you
may need to clean out your company’s office files, set up
new ones, or implement a new strategy by creating a more
efficient system. You may also need to clear out closets,
store rooms, and more.
Here is a big one you may not have thought of: What
are your beliefs about all areas of your life and business?
When you identify one, simply ask yourself, “Does this belief
serve me well?” Answer ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ If your answer is a
‘No’ you have the choice to build a different belief and make
the quality of your life/business better. What does all of this
mean? It means that transitions are changing from what is
current to the new and improved. To assist you in making
these transitions, here are some awareness points that may
help:
• The involuntary transitions are the hardest. It is
best when you can focus on the positive benefits of the tran-
sition.
• Transitions bring periods of deep introspection. They

Rotary Club of East Cobb Celebrates 25 Years
The Rotary Club of East Cobb celebrated its 25th anniversary on February
26 at the Georgian Club. Approximately 120 Rotarians and guests were pres-
ent to celebrate the accomplishments of the East Cobb Club, the district, and
Rotary International. The East Cobb Rotary Club and East Cobb Foundation
were founded in order to unite business men and women of the community so
that together with our heads, hands and hearts we could promote good will not
only in our community, but also worldwide.
The Rotary Club was very excited to have Betty Seigel, President Emeritus,
Kennesaw State University, provide the keynote address for the evening. During
her speech she so eloquently provided several metaphors for Rotary. Perhaps
the best was “You never see a single Sequoia standing alone in the forest. They
stand together. For what you can’t see is the roots from one tree intertwine
with the roots of the other tree, and together they stand mightily.” Collectively,
Rotarians have been standing tall and providing the necessary manpower
and aid to communities worldwide. The East Cobb Rotary Club meets every
Wednesday morning at 7am at Indian Hills Country Club. For more information Betty Seigel, Keynote Speaker

Christine Keeley’s chest pain made everything difficult, from walking up a
flight of stairs to going to the grocery store. “My body was crying out in
stress; I just didn’t realize it.” Medication didn’t help. Even resigning from
her stressful job didn’t help. So she went to see Dr. Caras, who determined
that angioplasty was her best option.
“After my surgery, I felt better right away. Dr. Caras and his team really
listened to me, and helped me learn how to listen to my body.” Christine’s
taking good care of herself, participating in WellStar’s Cardiac Rehab
program and exercising regularly. “Now, I have energy that goes and goes
and goes. I can do anything – even keep up with my grandkids.”
If you have heart, you can do just about anything.
Living well takes planning. It takes perseverance.
And most of all, it takes heart.
That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals,
WellStar is helping people like Christine with a world-class
cardiac network. From prevention to catheterization and
open-heart surgery to rehabilitation, we put our whole
hearts into taking care of yours.
