            SCSU POSITION DESCRIPTION
                                                   January 11, 2008

Position Title:                   VICE-PRESIDENT CAMPUS LIFE
Organization:                     Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU)
Position Type:                    Hired, 12-month term.
Remuneration:                     $14,000
                                      1) Standing Committee on Campus Life
Reports to:                           2) President & CEO
                                      3) Board of Directors
Academic Restrictions:            Up to 1.5 credits per session.

The Scarborough Campus Students’ Union is a not-for-profit student organization based at the University
of Toronto at Scarborough. SCSU is in search of a motivated and dedicated student leader to manage
various aspects of student life that will contribute to the enhancement of student life at UTSC. This
includes significant involvement in event planning and facilitating campus club activities.

DUTIES:
  - Operate in accordance with the SCSU By-Laws and Policies.
  - Develop short-term and long-term goals in consultation with the Standing Committee on Campus Life.
  - To complete regular written reports to be submitted to the Standing Committee on Campus Life and
    the Board of Directors.
  - Attend all meetings of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, the Standing Committee on
    Campus Life and as directed by Section 4.03 of Policy 3-010.
  - Undertake other duties as assigned by the President, Executive Committee, the Standing Committee
    on Campus Life and the Board of Directors.
  - Oversee and facilitate the Events Committee membership, meetings and activities.
  - Ensure the development and implementation of SCSU events, on or off campus, which include tri-
    campus events.
  - Protect the property of the SCSU.
  - Maintain regular office hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Recognizing that the Vice-Presidents’ functions embrace a broad range of roles and responsibilities, it is
important to note that not all functions are contained within this definition and the position itself should be
ever changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, specific roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited
to the following:

Supervisory:
   - Ensure that the Event Coordinators fulfill the requirements of their position, including but not
       limited to the Mosaic Coordinator, the SCSU Spring Formal Coordinator and the Orientation
       Coordinator.
   - In the absence of any Event Coordinator, carry out the duties of their position.
   - In consultation with the Vice-President Human Resources, ensure all Event Coordinators and the
       SCSU Charity Chair are familiar with and understand all SCSU policies.
   - Oversee the SCSU Charity Chair and ensure the responsibilities are met.
   - Oversee the Meal Exchange Coordinator and Events Committee

Communication:
   - Effectively publicize SCSU and UTSC activities and events to the student body.

    -    Seek effective and innovative ways to communicate to the UTSC student population.
    -    Maintain a constructive relationship with the UTSC campus and community.
    -    Administer SCSU’s Postering Service, ensuring the campus bulletin boards are kept in a clean
         and orderly manner.
    -    Maintaining All-Clubs e-mail and informing clubs of SCSU Subcommittee on Events Funding
         Meetings and all other pertinent information.

Clubs:
   - Serve as the primary contact for all academic and non-academic clubs at UTSC and work in
       consultation with the Vice-President Academics and the Vice-President Students & Equity to
       facilitate advocacy for clubs.
   - Advance campus life by utilizing all available resources for clubs through SCSU, Student Affairs
       and UTSC.
   - Maintain and further develop SCSU’s Clubs Funding Procedure in consultation with the Club’s
       Funding Subcommittee.
   - Coordinate with Student Affairs the Fall and Winter Session Clubs Weeks.

Financial:
    - Work within the approved budget as established by the Board of Directors for all SCSU events.
    - Work within the approved budget as established by the Board of Directors for Club Funding,
       ensuring club funding is properly managed and administered in a timely manner.
    - Manage all event ticket revenue, ensuring daily revenue reports are completed using the
       established control procedures by the Chief Accountant and Office Manager.

Operational
   - Must complete the University of Toronto’s Server Training Program (arrangements will be made
       during your term in office);
   - Expected to complete first aid certification (arrangements will be made during your term in office)

Availability
   - The Executive must maintain regular office hours.
   - The Executive must hold a minimum of fifteen (15) office hours per week.
   - An average work week is approximately 40 hours. Additional hours may be necessary from time to
       time.

   - SCSU Executive Committee
   - Standing Committee on Campus Life
   - SCSU Board of Directors (ex-officio)
   - Clubs’ Funding Subcommittee
   - UTSC Council on Student Services (ex-officio)
   - SCSU Operations Committee
   - Other committees as determined by the President and/or the Standing Committee on Campus Life

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
    -    Able to work independently or in groups with a firm understanding of UTSC student culture.
    -    Diplomatic advocate for student club needs.
    -    Experience in planning and logistics.
    -    Experience in managing, coordinating and motivating volunteers and hired event staff.

    -    Proficient and capable of creating financial documents, including balance sheets & income
         statements, cash flow statements, budgets and project forecasts and actuals.
    -    Exceptional verbal and written communication skills an asset for writing and communicating
         reports.
    -    Approaches tasks with an innovative mind-set and positive outlook in completing goals.
    -    Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and pressured environment and must be able to shift to other
         functions and priorities as needed.
    -    Open minded to the ideas suggested by students and management.
    -    Highly organized and able to meet demands on time.
    -    Excellent organizational and problem solving skills.
    -    Work is driven, detailed and professional.
