Beyond the
classroom
The JMC Academy is delighted to announce a
formal internship arrangement with leading
Australian production company Beyond
International (Beyond).
Since 1985, Beyond has become a major entertainment company. Today, the
company is involved in a range of activities relating to the creation, sale and
distribution of television, feature films and ancillary products to both local and
Jesse Cripps
international markets.
Some of Beyond’s better known productions include Mythbusters, What’s
Good For You, Stingers, Halifax fp, Hot Property/Auctions, Beyond 2000,
and the acclaimed mini series Day of the Roses. The company has also been
involved in the international success of feature films such as The Crossing,
Strictly Ballroom, Love Serenade, Chopper and Lantana.
Most recently, four JMC Academy third year Digital Television Production
students had the enviable opportunity of taking on an internship role at
Beyond. Here is what two of the students, Stuart Rowe and Jesse Cripps
had to say.

What did your duties involve at Beyond?
J: I sourced props from various locations around Sydney. I also
dressed various sets for a TV series that is being released in
November. That was quite exciting.
S: My job was to transcribe footage and log them, so if there
were interviews I would have to capture everything word for
word. I also went through archive footage from documentaries
and Logged them. I was interested to learn how footage was
put together. I did some research for specific genres to find
ideas for a reality show. I got to prepare cameras and go out on
a shoot which was pretty awesome.
How were you chosen for the internship?
J: I applied for the position advertised in class and was
selected on application and motivation levels.

S: Michael Rampe, Head of DTV told our class about the
internships, he told us that we were to apply for them as if we
were going for a job and he would pick the candidates. There
were five internships going out and I applied for one of them.
What was the most important thing you learned on the job?
Welcome to a new section of JMC Academy News, where J: I learnt how to deal with other crew members and how to get

J: It has played a major role in my decision to be in production.
Like that old saying goes ‘If you do something you love, you’ll
never work a day in your life”, so that’s my plan.

It appears that Jesse and Stuart were not the only ones to
benefit from this experience. Beyond Productions gave both
students a glowing reference recommending them to future
employers and expressed their gratitude for their diligent
contribution. We look forward to equally positive feedback on
our other Beyond interns.
