Atlas Copco launches an improved 10t underground loader
- the Scooptram® ST1030
An improved electrical system, an EPA Tier 3 diesel engine and a new instrument
panel represent the major improvements being incorporated in Atlas Copco’s new
front end loader; the Scooptram® ST1030. This new model, replacing the ST1020, is the
latest member of the ST10X0 progression. A large number of design changes have
been made to keep this 10 metric tonnes capacity loader at top production levels in
medium to large sized underground operations.

The most important improvement, from a service point of view, is the electrical system. It has
been redesigned, with focus on reliability and serviceability. Erik Svedlund, service engineer
at Atlas Copco, says:
“-The reduction of downtime due to electric failures in the electrical system has resulted in a
further increase of machine productivity”.
Another service friendly change is the new display panel, which replaces the previous gauge
cluster arrangement. The new instrument panel features an integrated warning system and an
engine fault code display. The system also indicates when it is time to change the air filters.

Change of engine
Among all the improvements, the change of engine is the most noticeable. The QSL9
Cummins engine uses the high-pressure common rail system to meet the EPA Tier 3
requirements. It has an optimized design resulting in a favourable relationship between size
and costs which gives high productivity. The engine has a high energy density design
providing a compact installation which facilitates service. The engine also provides electronic
protection for overheat or low oil pressure. Trial tests conducted in Chile and Brazil with
ST1020 equipped with the QSL9 engine has been successfully completed.

Two vehicles have been in operation for more than 2 200 hours each. Comments from the
Jacobina Mine in Brazil include more power, lower fuel consumption, less noise and
emissions and a higher availability. Cummins is a major engine supplier with a worldwide
sales and service network. As part of an agreement between Cummins and Atlas Copco,
Cummins will provide “Limited Repairer” level training to Atlas Copco service personnel at
Customer Centres located throughout the world.

Other changes
Other changes worth mentioning are the Ansul system as standard and improved routing
systems for hydraulic hoses and electrical wiring. Additionally, the transmission hydraulic
cooler has been changed to improve the cooling capacity. Finally, the new vehicle is fitted
with a service bay in the rear fender for fuel and oil filters.
