EDUCATION QUEENSLAND AND QUEENSLAND COLLEGE OF TEACHERS
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS
The recent release of the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) Professional Standards for
Queensland Teachers has raised questions about the purposes and uses of both the College
standards and Education Queensland’s Professional Standards for Teachers. It is therefore
timely to provide you with preliminary information on their intended uses.
The QCT Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers represents minimum standards
which will be used as the basis for determining whether future Queensland teachers have
appropriate capabilities to be afforded registration. It is intended that, when endorsed, the
College standards will provide benchmarks for the full registration of teachers at the end of their
provisional year. They will also be used to inform guidelines for the approval of pre-service
teacher education programs offered by Queensland higher education institutions.
In contrast, Education Queensland’s Professional Standards for Teachers is an aspirational
framework which can be used by teachers to formulate goals and extend their own learning in
order to strengthen classroom practice. For new teachers entering the state schooling system,
Education Queensland’s Professional Standards for Teachers serves as a key reference point
for the development of induction and mentoring programs. We have, therefore, taken every
opportunity to ensure continuity between the College standards and our own.
The current Enterprise Bargaining Agreement for Teachers includes reference to our
Professional Standards for Teachers. There is an expectation that all teachers employed by
Education Queensland fully engage with the Standards through access to quality learning
opportunities at school, regional and system levels. Professional development opportunities will
continue to be available in Terms 1 and 2, 2007 to support you and your teachers to build a
better understanding of the Professional Standards for Teachers and their use. Key contact

Departmental officers are working with the QCT to ensure that professional development using
our Professional Standards for Teachers framework will be recognised within QCT’s continuing
professional learning framework and renewal of teacher registration requirements.
