                               ATHLETIC TEAM NOTES
                                   MARCH 2010



Boys Basketball
      Varsity final record: 17-10
      Ranked 19th in South Jersey
      Team qualified for and advanced in the State Tournament defeating Toms River
       South in the 1st round and losing to Atlantic City in the 2nd round
      Senior, Matt Lopez scored 1000 career points in the State playoff game vs. Toms
       River South
      Matt Lopez has been selected to play in the Al Carino South Jersey boys
       basketball game and was nominated for the McDonald’s All American team
      Head Coach, Bob Byatt has now amassed 398 career coaching victories making
       him one of the winningest coaches in South Jersey



Girls Basketball
    Varsity final record: 5-20
    Senior, Ashley Giedemann was selected to play in the Al Carino South Jersey girls
       basketball game and was nominated for the McDonald’s All American team


Boys Swimming and Diving
   Final record: 5-6

   Ranked 15 in South Jersey
   Team qualified for the State Team Swim Championships losing to Mainland
     Regional in the 1st round

   Team defended their title of County Champions. 1 place performances were
     turned in by the 200 medley relay team of Justin Harvie, Nick Schillaci, Sal Liberto
     and Keith Marr with their best time of the season 1:47.29.

   The 400 free relay placed 1 with swimmers Kyle Hill, Jake Lightman, Keith Marr
     and Sal Liberto

   Individual 1 places were Sal Liberto in the 200 IM, Keith Marr in the 100 free style
     and Nick Schillaci in the 100 breast stroke. Also a personal best time for Mike
     Mercurio who swam the 500 free style and broke 6 minutes

   Senior diver, Ben Brendlinger placed 4 in the State Dive Championship meet held
     at The College of New Jersey
   Ben Brendlinger participated in the Montgomery High School Cougar Invitational
     Championship and set a meet, pool and school record for an 11-dive meet


Girls Swimming and Diving
    Final record: 5-6
    Team qualified for the State Team Swim Championships losing to Mainland
       Regional in the 1st round
    Swimmers Erin Malone and Kate Powell qualified for State Individual
       Championships
Boys Bowling
                           2010 – Tournament of Champions
                               2010 – State Champions
                            2010 – South Jersey Champions
      Final record: 60-12
      The team under the direction of Head Coach Mike Hudock and assistants, Tracy
       Burkhart and Sam Maccarone completed one of the greatest sports seasons in
       WTHS history. On Saturday, February 13th the team won the South Jersey
       Sectional title and then followed one week later on February 20th winning the
       Group IV State Championship and then the Tournament of Champions title. It
       marked only the 5th time in the past 47 years that a South Jersey school has won a
       Bowling State Championship…the team defeated East Brunswick, claiming the
       Group IV title and then rolled a perfect game (Baker set) denying Sayerville’s bid to
       three-peat Tournament of Champion crown.
      The bowling championship team members included: John Bartosiewicz, Matt
       Lucich, Mick Maccarone, Steve Musolino, Jason Pavlinko, Steve Pavlinko and
       Paul Scharf



Girls Bowling
    Final record: 62-9
    Team placed 2nd at the South Jersey Sectional Championship meet




Wrestling
   Final record: 23-2
   Final ranking #2 in South jersey
   South Jersey Group IV Champions, first time since 2000
   Olympic Conference Champions
   Team placed 2nd in the District 30 Tournament held at Overbrook HS with 6
      wrestlers winning championships: 103 pounds Ricky Carter, 125 Christian Salera,
      130 Chalie Huff, 135 James Higgins, 171 Daymien Scott and 189 Colin Walsh.
      Township advanced a total of 10 wrestlers to the Region 8 Tournament at
      Absegami HS. Senior James Higgins became only the 4th Township wrestler to
      win 4 District titles during their career and Junior Chalie Huff was named “Most
      Outstanding Wrestler” of the Tournament
   Junior, Chalie Huff won the 130 pound Region VIII Wrestling championship at
      Absegami HS. Chalie advanced to the State Tournament in Atlantic City. Also
      placing at Regions and advancing to States were Ricky Carter, Matt Salera,
      Christian Salera, James Higgins and Daymien Scott
   Senior, James Higgins won his 139th career match at WTHS, becoming the
      school’s all time win leader
   Chalie Huff placed 5th and sophomore Ricky Carter placed 6th in the State
      Championship Tournament at Atlantic City
Boys Indoor Track
   Team placed 2nd at the South Jersey Group IV Sectional Championship.
   Devon Carter and Steve Morrone led the team to a runnerup finish at Toms River.
      Devon won the 400 meter dash and 55 meter high hurdle races, Steve won the
      800 meter run and was second in the 400 meter. Also qualifying for the State
      finals were Tyler Stumm in the high jump and AJ Ashton in the 55 meter hurdles
      and Anthony Dentino in the 2 mile run
   Team placed 4th at the State Group IV Championship Meet let by Devon Carter’s
      2nd place finish in the 400 meter dash and Steve Morrone’s 2nd place showing in
      the 800 meter
   Senior, Devon Carter won the Meet of Champions in the 55 meter hurdles at Toms
      River in school record time 7:49 seconds. Carter, Steve Morrone, Tevin Lobban
      and Randy Smith finished 2nd place in the 4x400 meter relay, their time was the
      fastest in the state of NJ this year



Girls Indoor Track
    Team place 4th at the South Jersey Group IV Sectional Championship.
    Megan Tiernan won the 800 meter dash…16th fastest in the nation and 5th best in
       the state this year.
    Team placed 6th at the State Group IV Championship meet. Sophomore Megan
       Tiernan won the Group IV State Championship in the 800 meter dash with a time
       of 2:14.29, the 9th fastest time in the nation this year
    The 1600 meter relay team of Megan Tiernan, Nicole Tiernan, Miranda Roberts
       and Kristen D’Allessandro placed 3rd. Chelsea Holland took 4th in the shot put,
       while Dina Iacone placed 7th in the 3200 meter race
    Sophomore, Megan Tiernan won the Meet of Champions in the 800 meter at Toms
       River in a personal best time of 2:11.53, running one of the fastest time in state
       history, 3rd fastest in the country and the fastest in the state this year

Cheerleading
   Won the Olympic Conference Championship for the 11th consecutive year
   Team placed 2nd at the State Championship competition at the Sun Bank Arena in
      Trenton
   Team placed 2nd in the National Competition “Battle at the Capital” held in
      Washington DC
