 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF FALCONBRIDGE, MR. DEREK PANNELL,
      ELECTED CHAIR OF THE MINING ASSOCIATION OF CANADA

Quebec City, Quebec, June 21, 2006 - The Mining Association of Canada
(MAC) is pleased to announce the election of Derek G. Pannell, as Chair of the
Association. Mr. Pannell is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Falconbridge
Limited. He replaces Richard Ross, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
of Inmet Mining Corporation, who has completed his two-year term.

Mr. Pannell was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Falconbridge (formerly
Noranda) on June 1, 2002. Mr. Pannell also served as the President and Chief
Operating Officer for Noranda between September 2001 and June 2002.

Mr. Pannell has been an active member of the MAC Board and a key member of
the MAC Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative, serving as Chair of the
Governance Team. He will also replace Mr. Ross as an industry representative
on the Community of Interest Panel. Launched on May 10, 2004, TSM is a
stewardship initiative that aims to sustain the industry’s role as a leading
economic player by increasing public trust in its ability to manage the
environmental and social issues important to Canadians. TSM encompasses
environmental management and stakeholder inclusion practices that will help the
industry earn its social license to operate.

Mr. Pannell is a metallurgical engineer with over 35 years of experience in the
mining and metals industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Imperial
College in London, England. Mr. Pannell is a Board member of the International
Council on Mining and Metals. He also acted as Co-Chair of the Mining Industry
Training and Adjustment Council from 1996 to 1998, was a member of the
Premier of New Brunswick's roundtable on the environment from 1995 to 1997,
and was President of the Rouyn-Noranda CEGEP during 1991 and 1992. Mr.
Pannell is registered as an engineer in Quebec and Peru.

Other elections to the MAC Board include:

   •   Peter R. Jones, President and Chief Executive Officer, HudBay
       Minerals Inc as First Vice-Chair
   •   Jim Gowans, President and Chief Executive Officer, De Beers
       Canada Inc. as Second Vice-Chair

Gordon Peeling is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association and
Secretary to the Board.

Based in Ottawa, MAC is the national organization for the Canadian mining
industry. Its members are engaged in mineral exploration, mining, smelting,
refining and semi-fabrication. Last year, MAC was honoured by the Globe
Foundation, winning the Industry Association Award for Environmental
Performance
