RPA midwife nominated NSW Woman of the
                   Year
One of the state’s longest serving midwives, Sister Alison Bush of Royal
Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) has been announced as a finalist for the
NSW Woman of the Year Award 2010.

Sister Bush has been recognised for her role as an Aboriginal Liaison
Midwife and her commitment to improving the health outcomes of
Aboriginal mothers and babies across Australia for the past 40 years.

Sister Bush began her career at RPA in 1969 as the first Aboriginal
midwife to be based at a major maternity hospital in NSW.

In her role as an Aboriginal Liaison Midwife, Sister Bush works as a
`cultural broker’, helping to ensure Aboriginal women and babies are
cared for in a culturally respectful, safe and secure way. During her
career, Sister Bush has delivered more than 1000 babies from across
NSW.

Sister Bush has also provided expert input into policy and service delivery
at a local, state and national level. She played a vital role in establishing a
national maternity health advanced educational program for Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander health workers, in partnership with The Royal
Australian College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the James Cooke
University, Townsville.

Sister Bush is a current member of the Sydney South West Area Health
Advisory Committee. She continues to liaise with the Aboriginal Medical
Service and provide a link between the Women’s Health Service,
Maternity Services, Community Health and other Aboriginal initiatives with
Sydney South West Area Health Service.

The NSW Woman of the Year Award nomination follows Sister Bush’s
induction into the Hall of Fame at the Aboriginal Health Awards in July
2009.

In 1999, she was awarded an AO and was the first midwife or nurse to be
made an honorary fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand
College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists the previous year.
