IS IT ADVISABLE TO BRING DEPENDENTS ALONG WHEN REPORTING? Command Philosophy:
Getting your family moved in to their new home is your first priority when reporting to CGC BELUGA.
The XPO will work closely with you to ensure your family is housed before you report for your first full
workday.

HAVE A JUNIOR MEMBER DESCRIBE THE AREA, JOB AND ANYTHING ELSE OF INTEREST
TO A NEWLY ARRIVING MEMBER. :

Things to do: All ocean water sports (beach is 15 mins away; surfing, bodyboarding, etc), all
general water sports (many local lakes/rivers), salt water fishing, fresh water fishing, many public and
military gyms, military pools, many golf courses. (Local Navy and Coast Guard Morale, Wellness and
Recreation (MWR) facilities offer most activities and equipment for unbelievably low prices, like
kayaking, horse back riding, boat rentals, camper rentals, etc.) Hampton Roads has a several coliseums and
1 AAA baseball park. Local sporting events such as AHL Hockey, AAA baseball, arena football, and
various others are great entertainment. Theater, Opera, Ballet, and the Virginia Symphony are a few of the
“fine arts” that are available in the area. Restaurants are too many to list. The mountains are about 3-4
hours away, and provide activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and back-country camping.
Traffic in the Hampton Roads area is terrible during rush hour. If living off base, prepare to get to
work 30 minutes before liberty expires in case you hit bad traffic. Leave all your uniforms (with the
exception of your “trops” and “bravos” on the boat in your lockers. You never know when we will get
recalled and deployed at the last second for extended periods.
BEWARE of SCAMS!! The Hampton Roads area is filled with notorious rip-off establishments
that are specifically aimed at “E-1 and up” military members, especially some of the used car lots and
“rent-to-own” businesses. They are hunting people with the following profile: New to the area (you don’t
know their bad reputation), fresh out of boot camp (so you REALLY need a BRAND NEW car), little or no
credit history (so they can charge super-high interest rates: They’ll charge you 29.9% interest if you’re not
careful), and a “garnishable” income (so they can GUARANTEE that they get your money). An E-2 or
E-3 out of boot camp is their prey. There are, however, many honest businesses in the area. Be sure to talk
to the XPO before signing any agreement involving your pay. The XPO can also point you in a safe
direction for your car buying and other needs.
Call for any other questions or inquiries, and congratulations on your orders to the USCGC
BELUGA!
