Dr. Yvan Guindon, RSC's New President-Elect
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 29, 2006) - RSC (The Royal Society of Canada): The Academies of
Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Yvan Guindon to the
position of President-Elect, effective until November 2007 at which time he will become RSC's next President. A
graduate of the Universite de Montreal (PhD in Organic Chemistry, 1981), Dr. Guindon brings to RSC a
remarkable range of research and research management experience as well as close ties with the
pharmaceutical industry. RSC President Dr. Patricia Demers is "delighted that Dr. Guindon's valuable experience
and networks will serve to continue the expansion and outreach of our activities."

Joining Merck Frosst Canada in 1979 as a Senior Research Chemist, he was promoted to Director of Medicinal
Chemistry in 1984 and then Senior Director in 1985. He completed the synthesis of various leukotrienes involved
in allergic and inflammatory responses and then focused on the discovery of drug candidates that could interfere
with the leukotrienes pathway and their potential application to the treatment of asthma.

In 1987 Dr. Guindon went to Bio-Mega as Scientific Director and was promoted within the year to Vice-President
of Bio-Mega/Boehringer Ingelheim Research Inc. There, he was involved in discovery efforts to identify an anti-
herpetic drug, an HIV protease inhibitor, and an anti-hypertensive drug based on renin inhibitors.

In 1994 Dr. Guindon was appointed CEO and Scientific Director of the Institut de recherches cliniques de
Montreal (IRCM), a renowned biomedical research center. Through his vision, determination and exceptional
dedication, he gave IRCM a remarkable boost, which led the Quebec government to invest $30 million toward
the expansion of the Institute. He recruited high-level researchers and modernized the research infrastructure.
He also set up the Institute's Bio-Organic Chemistry Research Unit, where he continues to carry out research in
organic and medicinal chemistry. His team is currently conducting research in free radical chemistry and the
discovery of new anti-inflammatory and anti-tumoral agents.

Throughout his career Dr. Guindon has maintained close ties with the academic milieu. As Professor in the
Department of Chemistry, Universite de Montreal, he has pursued research as well as taught and supervised
numerous graduate students. He is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry at McGill University.

Dr. Guindon's publications (more than 100) and patents (more than 50) are testimony to his significant
contributions in both basic and applied research. Throughout his career, he has received many awards and
honours. He became a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada in 1988 and was elected to RSC's Academy of
Science in 1990. In 2004, he was made a member of the Order of Canada. In 2006, he received the Lionel-
Boulet Award, one of the prestigious Prix du Quebec, which highlights his remarkable contribution to Quebec's
technological and economic development in the area of medicinal chemistry.

Founded in 1882 by the Governor General of Canada, RSC is the country's oldest and most prestigious scholarly
organization. Its mission is to promote learning and recognize remarkable contributions in the arts, humanities
and sciences, as well as in Canadian public life.
