        KEMPSEY DISTRICT HOSPITAL STRUGGLES
TO TREAT EMERGENCY PATIENTS IN TIME
Member for Oxley, Andrew Stoner, said today there were still too many patients
waiting longer than recommended for treatment in Kempsey District Hospital’s
emergency department.

Mr Stoner said analysis of the latest hospital performance figures show 302 patients
waited longer than official time limits for treatment in Kempsey hospital.

"Local families who attended Kempsey District Hospital emergency department are
having to wait longer and longer for treatment because of Labor's mismanagement of the
hospital system," Mr Stoner said.

"The latest figures show hospitals across NSW are still struggling to treat emergency
patients within times considered necessary for the urgency of their condition," he said.

"It's clear the Iemma Government is not giving local hospitals the resources that the
dedicated staff need to do their jobs."

In March 2007 across New South Wales a total 35,611, or 23%, of all Emergency
Department patients were not treated within the officially recommended time frame –
that's more than 1,100 people per day.

Mr Stoner said statistics showed that of the 1255 patients triaged at Kempsey District
Hospital, 24% or 302 people, were not seen in a satisfactory time frame.

“Clearly, Kempsey District Hospital is not receiving enough support or resources from the
Iemma Labor Government to treat emergency patients within official time frames,” Mr
Stoner said.

"The Iemma Labor Government must commit to better resourcing of local hospitals
so local patients can get treated in time, without having to drive long distances to
be seen at larger Base hospitals at Coffs Harbour or Port Macquarie,” Mr Stoner
concluded.
