Look out for the signs of an active and healthy
Ashfield community
THIS month Ashfield Council will be installing footpath stencils and signs with special icons to direct
pedestrians to local sporting and recreational facilities including Pratten Park, Ashfield Park and the
Ashfield Aquatic Centre.
Ashfield Mayor, Councillor Ted Cassidy PSM, said the signs and stencils would be displayed on
existing infrastructure and placed along walking routes as part of Council’s Active in Ashfield grant
program.
“This initiative is designed to encourage residents to live an active lifestyle, by choosing a healthy diet
and undertaking regular, moderate exercise,” he said.
“Pedestrians can follow the icons, footpath stencils and directional signage from the Ashfield Town
Hall on Liverpool Road, or the Ashfield railway station, to Pratten Park on Arthur Street, Ashfield
Park on Orpington Street or the Aquatic Centre, which is on the corner of Frederick and Elizabeth
Streets.
“We have chosen the routes determined to be the most accessible, safe and direct for pedestrians.”
Cr Cassidy said the colourful icons, including footballs, trees and swimmers, represented the three
locations and were designed by Council’s previous Artist in Residence, Ken Hutchison.
“Council will be working with a local Disability Employment program to arrange for the stencils to be
painted on the footpaths.”

“Our goal is to encourage the Ashfield community to access local recreational facilities and to become
more physically active, which will ultimately help reduce obesity,” said Cr Cassidy.
The Active in Ashfield program is funded by a $20,000 grant from the Healthy Local Government
Grants Program, funded by the Local Government and Shires Association of NSW and NSW Health.
Cr Cassidy said Council would expand its Active in Ashfield theme at the Ashfield Carnival of
Cultures on Sunday 14 October.
“This year’s event will feature an Active Zone, complete with sporting demonstrations, activities,
giveaways and displays,” he said.
“We will also be showcasing local sporting and recreational clubs and associations.”
